A reflective assessment of teaching praxis’ notions and beliefs becomes essential in instructing learners to effectively interact in intercultural encounters. Arguments in favor of teaching the intercultural component have been promoted for years but have not fully reached systematic incorporation in foreign language education in Latin American countries. This paper examines the concept of the intercultural mediator, approaching key questions (why, what, and how) that emerge when integrating intercultural objectives in the language classroom supported on theoretical frameworks and insights from the authors’ teaching experience. The methodology used was an exploratory qualitative document review. Scientific articles published in reliable databases were consulted to answer the questions targeting intercultural communicative competence teaching. The main objective is to invigorate the d...

Nascent entrepreneurs, individuals in the initial stages of establishing new business ventures, play a crucial role in both the economy and society. By focusing on personality and workplace dynamics this study analyzes the antecedents of individual's intention to embark on entrepreneurship by using survey data from 1497 employees across nine Latin American countries including Argentina, Peru, Mexico, Chile, Ecuador, Colombia, Bolivia, Cuba, and Brazil. Our cross-cultural results reveal that a higher presence of all three components of Dark Triad traits—Machiavellianism, psychopathy, and narcissism—significantly enhances an employee's inclination toward entrepreneurship. Additionally, workers who have higher scores in these three traits perceive themselves as being ostracized or marginalized in the workplace due to their personality characteristics. This perception, in turn, makes the...

This article aims at identifying some of the actors responsible for the transportation of records from America to the Iberian Peninsula in the sixteenth century. We will also show how their intervention had an impact on political communication in the Spanish empire. Our goal is to analyse the formation of archives from the perspective of the agents who were charged with their transportation. We will examine the role that Indigenous messengers, as well as the lawyers who were expected to represent the Spanish King’s vassals from the overseas territories before the Council of the Indies in Spain played in the circulation, use and conservation of the records in the empire. Since it is impossible to be exhaustive, the analysis will be built on a series of examples relative to the province of Yucatán in New Spain.

The aim is to show how a word can have different origins and that everything we know about it can be wrong, or how a misinterpretation can make a word have a great meaning, as Ricardo Palma explains in the story «Una carta de Indias». In it he describes how a small mistake and lack of knowledge can make a word not exactly what we think it is.

Why are some countries of Latin America poor despite their great wealth? From the colony to the republic, many Latin American economies have focused on the extraction of natural resources. In the following article, the author will develop a historical analysis of the Spanish conquest. Specially focusing on the Peruvian case, the author will explain how this background shaped a top-down property regime with longstanding effects. To duly explain the “Accidental Fortune”, a constant comparison will be make between the Spanish conquest of the Americas, and the British colonization of North America. The author will show how the found resources guided each case into different directions.

This research covers the technical and soft skills required in software development, a globally in-demand activity. These skills are required to efficiently perform in a very globalized, competitive field. Previous studies show the existence of a gap between industry and academia. Training centers provide professionals with technical skills, but as of late, the need for soft skills has become apparent, making it important to study and find ways to embed them into the professionals who join the industry. The application of Personal Software Process (PSP) methodology helps students to strengthen their skills in the software development process, however, the method is not widespread in academia nor industry. This article shows the importance of soft skills, according to Latin American companies, and how PSP can reduce the skills gap.

There was an upward trend in energy commodity prices since 2000, but with the surge in supply coming from unconventional oil and gas resources in North and South America, the trend in natural gas prices has become downward in recent years. However, the exploitation of these resources is generating public concerns due to the possible adverse environmental impacts of using hydraulic fracturing and other techniques on underground water. The purpose of this paper is to address the following questions: are there super cycles in natural gas prices? What are the environmental consequences in Latin America of the exploitation of unconventional gas given the cyclical behavior of gas prices and how can governments implement environmental policies to regulate unconventional gas extraction? Three super cycles in natural gas prices are identified with the last peak occurring in 2006. Our analysis ind...

The participation of patients in precision oncology trials needs to fulfill molecular-based selection criteria. This strongly limits accrual, and as a consequence, screening successes have decreased, costs have increased, and fewer subjects are enrolled. To achieve narrowed targets, studies have been forced to be multicenter and multinational to reach a larger pool of candidates. However, this globalization faces many challenges, as, for example, in the case of precision oncology trials. These trials have a complex structure that is dependent upon a high-tech infrastructure and knowledge in a dynamic environment. Given the movement of precision clinical cancer research to regions other than Europe and the U.S., it is important to evaluate the feasibility of performing such trials in lower-middle- and low-income countries. Here we critically discuss the advantages of conducting precision ...

The current state of society is that of a threat of widespread criminal expansion in minors with more extreme practices such as those of hitmen,to the detriment of common and personal integrity. In addition, there is a climate of turbulence and economic uncertainty typical ofthe difficult context that modern and globalized societies are going through, with a tendency to increase due to the global economic and socialcrisis. These crises are, in turn, consequences of the impact of armed conflicts between powerful countries at the very beginning of the transition in the use of energy inputs, on the one hand, and, on the other hand, of the negative impact of climate change in an environment pandemic and post-pandemic. from covid-19. This reality makes it worrying to decide to take preventive actions with beneficial and direct effects for society and the common good. The social upheaval and t...

Within Latin America, about 319 volcanoes have been active in the Holocene, but 202 of these volcanoes have no seismic, deformation or gas monitoring. Following the 2012 Santorini Report on satellite Earth Observation and Geohazards, the Committee on Earth Observation Satellites (CEOS) developed a 4-year pilot project (2013-2017) to demonstrate how satellite observations can be used to monitor large numbers of volcanoes cost-effectively, particularly in areas with scarce instrumentation and/or difficult access. The pilot aims to improve disaster risk management (DRM) by working directly with the volcano observatories that are governmentally responsible for volcano monitoring as well as with the international space agencies (ESA, CSA, ASI, DLR, JAXA, NASA, CNES). The goal is to make sure that the most useful data are collected at each volcano following the guidelines of the Santorini repo...

The article shows that the largest family firms in Brazil have a greater longevity than other large family firms in other emerging economies, such as China or Mexico. The study analyzes these giant firms, many of them centennial, who have become global players. Public support is one of its success factors, but the authors outline the significance of the accumulation of resources inside these firms, an enduring pool of know-how that allows them to adjust to the changing reality of their own country and the international markets. The second section of the article focuses on four case studies of some of the oldest and largest family businesses in Brazil: Banco Itaú Unibanco, Companhia Siderúrgica Nacional (CSN), Odebrecht and Votorantim. The study aims to make a contribution to a better understanding of the contribution of these family firms to the success of the Brazilian economy today.

This paper highlights the crucial role of adopting ISO 31000 as a comprehensive and flexible risk management standard for organizations throughout Latin America. ISO 31000 provides a globally recognized framework for tackling various challenges, such as regulatory pressures, economic fluctuations, and operational inefficiencies. By embedding risk management into day-to-day operations and strategic decision-making, organizations can strengthen their resilience and improve decision-making processes. The study examines key elements of ISO 31000, such as risk identification, assessment, and response strategies, which include mitigation, transfer, acceptance, or elimination. It stresses the importance of stakeholder engagement to ensure effective communication and consultation at every phase. The iterative nature of risk management outlined in ISO 31000 promotes continuous improvement and ali...
