Background Evidence regarding differences in survival associated with the site of metastasis in triplenegative breast cancer (TNBC) remains limited. Our aim was to analyze the overall survival (OS), distant relapse free survival (DRFS), and survival since the diagnosis of the relapse (MS), according to the side of metastasis. Methods This was a retrospective study of TNBC patients with distant metastases at the Instituto Nacional de Enfermedades Neoplasicas (Lima, Peru) from 2000 to 2014. Prognostic factors were determined by multivariate Cox regression analysis. Results In total, 309 patients were included. Regarding the type of metastasis, visceral metastasis accounted for 41% and the lung was the most frequent first site of metastasis (33.3%). With a median follow-up of 10.2 years, the 5-year DRFS and OS were 10% and 26%, respectively. N staging (N2-N3 vs. N0, HR = 1.49, 95%CI: 1.04-2...

There is currently a cogeneration deficit at a sugar plant near Nepeña, Ancash, Peru, where the exhaust steam from the mill area is approximately 235◦C. The steam should be at a temperature close to 120◦C, therefore, the heat is dissipated without being recovered. The waste heat available in the plant is mainly exhaust gases and mill area exhaust steam, so the installation of an Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) is proposed as a solution for the use of waste heat, with the objective of optimizing cogeneration in the plant. Three systems are proposed: ORC with exhaust gas system, ORC with unified system and ORC with total unified system, so the thermoeconomic analysis in this article is made based on a Series Heat Exchangers ORC (SHEORC). For this purpose, six scenarios will be analyzed in which the electrification of the mills and the direct sale of energy to the power grid will be propos...

Non-destructive methods that accurately estimate leaf area (LA) and leaf weight (LW) are simple and inexpensive, and represent powerful tools in the development of physiological and agronomic research. The objective of this research is to generate mathematical models for estimating the LA and LW of Cinchona officinalis leaves. A total of 220 leaves were collected from C. officinalis plants 10 months after transplantation. Each leaf was measured for length, width, weight, and leaf area. Data for 80% of leaves were used to form the training set, and data for the remaining 20% were used as the validation set. The training set was used for model fit and choice, whereas the validation set al.lowed assessment of the of the model’s predictive ability. The LA and LW were modeled using seven linear regression models based on the length (L) and width (Wi) of leaves. In addition, the models were ...

The participation of patients in precision oncology trials needs to fulfill molecular-based selection criteria. This strongly limits accrual, and as a consequence, screening successes have decreased, costs have increased, and fewer subjects are enrolled. To achieve narrowed targets, studies have been forced to be multicenter and multinational to reach a larger pool of candidates. However, this globalization faces many challenges, as, for example, in the case of precision oncology trials. These trials have a complex structure that is dependent upon a high-tech infrastructure and knowledge in a dynamic environment. Given the movement of precision clinical cancer research to regions other than Europe and the U.S., it is important to evaluate the feasibility of performing such trials in lower-middle- and low-income countries. Here we critically discuss the advantages of conducting precision ...

Prostate, breast, colorectal, cervical, and lung cancers are the leading cause of cancer in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) accounting for nearly 50% of cancer cases and cancer deaths in the region. Following the IARC Code Against Cancer methodology, a group of Latin American experts evaluated the evidence on several medical interventions to reduce cancer incidence and mortality considering the cancer burden in the region. A recommendation to limit the use of HRT was issued based on the risk associated to develop breast, endometrial, and ovarian cancer and on growing concerns related to the over-the-counter and without prescription sales, which in turn bias estimations on current use in LAC. In alignment with WHO breast and cervical cancer initiatives, biennial screening by clinical breast examination (performed by trained health professionals) from the age of 40 years and biennial...

Introduction: The worldwide incidence of melanoma has increased in the last 40 years. Our aim was to describe the clinic-pathological characteristics and outcomes of three cohorts of patients diagnosed with melanoma in a Latin-American cancer institute during the last 20 years. Methods: We evaluated three retrospective patient cohorts diagnosed with melanoma at Instituto Nacional de Enfermedades Neoplasicas (INEN), a public hospital in Lima, Peru, for the years 2005–2006, 2010–2011, and 2017–2018. Survival rate differences were assessed using the Log-rank test. Results: Overall, 584 patients were included (only trunk and extremities); 51% were male, the mean age was 61 (3–97) years, and 48% of patients resided in rural areas. The mean time to diagnosis was 22.6 months, and the mean Breslow thickness was 7.4 mm (T4). Lower extremity was the most common location (72%). A majority o...

Climate change is one of the main global challenges, addressed in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 13, which seeks to “take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts”. The objective of the research was to analyze scientific articles that directly relate to SDG 13 through a bibliometric analysis for the period 2015 to 2024 of the Scopus database using the search term “SDG 13” OR “Sustainable Development Goal 13”. The research identified prolific authors, articles, sources with the highest impact in the area of study, leading institutions and countries in publications along with a detailed keyword analysis. The results show that interest in the study of SDG 13 has grown significantly with a focus on areas such as mitigation and adaptation, low carbon economy and public policy. This analysis provides an overview of advances in SDG 13 research, h...
