Style transfer is a natural language processing generation task, it consists of substituting one given writing style for another one. In this work, we seek to perform informal-to-formal style transfers in the English language by using a style transfer model that takes advantage of the GPT-2. This process is shown in our web interface where the user input a informal message by text or voice. Our target audience are students and professionals in the need to improve the quality of their work by formalizing their texts. A style transfer is considered successful when the original semantic meaning of the message is preserved after the independent style has been replaced with a formal one with a high degree of grammatical correctness. This task is hindered by the scarcity of training and evaluation datasets alongside the lack of metrics. To accomplish this task, we opted to utilize OpenAI’s G...

Cervical cancer is one of the main causes of death by disease worldwide. In Peru, it holds the first place in frequency and represents 8% of deaths caused by sickness. To detect the disease in the early stages, one of the most used screening tests is the cervix Papanicolaou test. Currently, digital images are increasingly being used to improve Pap test efficiency. This work develops an algorithm based on adaptive thresholds, which will be used in Pap smear assisted quality control software. The first stage of the method is a pre-processing step, in which noise and background removal is done. Next, a block is segmented for each one of the points selected as not background, and a local threshold per block is calculated to search for cell nuclei. If a nucleus is detected, an artifact rejection follows, where only cell nuclei and inflammatory cells are left for the doctors to interpret. The ...

Vehicle impersonation is one of the main problems based on license plates adulteration. Furthermore, license plate recognition has been field of study of computer vision, due to the high impact it has on intelligent transport, road safety, etc. This work presents an OCR process based on license plate recognition. To achieve this, we have established a rectified license plate database to experiment. The process consists of an initial noise filtering to the images, to later segment the region of the plate that contains the characters, then, perform a pre-processing on the images and, finally, isolate each of the characters to apply the OCR individually to each one of them. The results show an 89.33% accuracy in the license plate recognition in accordance with similar researches, and a 96.11% accuracy in the recognition of each character individually.

Over the last years, Convolutional Neural Networks have been extensively used for solving problems such as image classification, object segmentation, and object detection. However, deep neural networks require a great deal of data correctly labeled in order to perform properly. Generally, generation and labeling processes are carried out by recruiting people to label the data manually. To overcome this problem, many researchers have studied the use of data generated automatically by a renderer. To the best of our knowledge, most of this research was conducted for general-purpose domains but not for specific ones. This paper presents a methodology to generate synthetic data and train a deep learning model for the segmentation of pieces of machinery. For doing so, we built a computer graphics synthetic 3D scenery with the 3D models of real pieces of machinery for rendering and capturing vi...

Dental cavities represent a significant global health challenge, particularly in low-and middle-income countries, where early detection and diagnosis can substantially improve clinical outcomes. This study presents the development of a mobile application that utilizes YOLOv7 to detect early carious lesions on intraoral images, intending to provide dental professionals with a tool for timely diagnosis and intervention. The research was carried out in three key phases: analysis of YOLOv7, system development, and validation. The application was trained in a real clinical environment in Peru in collaboration with two independent dentists and their patients in two private clinics. Intraoral images were collected and processed from 40 participants, ensuring complete adherence to the ethical and privacy standards required for clinical studies. The experimental results demonstrated that the appl...

Ultrasound was combined with ethanol to improve different aspects of carrot convective drying, evaluating both processing and product quality. The ultrasound in water treatment resulted in cellular swelling and small impact on texture. Differently, the ultrasound in ethanol and ethanol treatments modified both carrot microstructure (cell wall modifications of parenchymatic tissue) and macrostructure (shrinkage and resistance to perforation). Pre-treatments with ultrasound in ethanol and ethanol improved the drying kinetics, reducing the processing time (similar to 50%) and the energy consumption (42-62%). These pre-treatments also enhanced rehydration, whose initial rate and water retention were higher than the control. In addition, the carotenoid content was preserved after drying, for all the treatments. Any impact on shrinkage was observed. A mechanistic discussion, based on structura...

The study of artificial learning processes in the area of computer vision context has mainly focused on achieving a fixed output target rather than on identifying the underlying processes as a means to develop solutions capable of performing as good as or better than the human brain. This work reviews the well-known segmentation efforts in computer vision. However, our primary focus is on the quantitative evaluation of the amount of contextual information provided to the neural network. In particular, the information used to mimic the tacit information that a human is capable of using, like a sense of unambiguous order and the capability of improving its estimation by complementing already learned information. Our results show that, after a set of pre and post-processing methods applied to both the training data and the neural network architecture, the predictions made were drastically c...

ABSTRACT Diabetic retinopathy is a leading cause of vision loss in developed countries. Regular diabetic retinal eye screenings are needed to detect early signs of retinopathy, so that appropriate treatments can be rendered to prevent blindness. Digital imaging is becoming available as a means of screening for diabetic retinopathy. However, with the large number of patients undergoing screenings, medical professionals require a tremendous amount of time and effort in order to analyse and diagnose the fundus photo-graphs, the treatment is done on a digital image, to obtain results as complex as recognizing patterns or as simple as enhancing con-tours, may involve filtering, transformations of gray levels, based on histogram processing, describing, between others. The design of a teaching tool to facilitate image processing, allowing access to each of the steps involved in the system, ensu...

The article dwells upon a transition character of the Ural proletariat at the post-reform time period. Both domestic and foreign historiography define the social image of the Russian worker of the 20th century second part as either proletarian or referring to a “half-worker and half-peasant” type, combining traditional pre-capitalist features with newer ones, characteristic of industrial manufacture. A manufacturer’s being connected to the land as well as forming a certain mentality combined with the professional skills are considered the main criteria while defining the Russian workers’ typology. Taking into consideration the Urals old tradition of industrial manufacture, the process of forming an independent class at the area progressed rather vigorously. Despite of land allotments availability, workers in the Urals got under influence of modernization. Treating scornfully peas...

A neural network is a mathematical model that is able to perform a task automatically or semi-automatically after learning the human knowledge that we provided. Moreover, a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) is a type of sophisticated neural network that has shown to efficiently learn tasks related to the area of image analysis (among other areas). One example of these tasks is image segmentation, which aims to find regions or separable objects within an image. A more specific type of segmentation called semantic segmentation, makes sure that each region has a semantic meaning by giving it a label or class. Since neural networks can automate the task of semantic segmentation of images, they have been very useful for the medical area, applying them to the segmentation of organs or abnormalities (tumors). Therefore, this thesis project seeks to address the task of semantic segmentation of ...

Tourism is truly an international/global industry. Tourism is vital to the economy of a country and sustainable tourism development requires an understanding of the complex interrelationships and interactions among a multitude of environmental factors and interdisciplinary forces that play a critical role in tourism development. While overall the field of tourism has been abundantly researched, there are certain areas where there is a paucity of research, namely, competition analysis, branding and positioning. Our research contributes to this extremely important but relatively less researched subject. Specifically, we study the relationship between destination development and its brand image. We develop a conceptual model which identifies various constructs, processes and linkages involved in the relationship between destination development and its brand image. We propose that the brand ...

Tooth decay is a global challenge due to lack of dental care and excessive sugar consumption. These generate expensive dental treatments and affect quality of life, self-esteem, and productivity. Due to this, an approach is proposed for the detection of carious pre-lesions through dental image processing and using 2 Deep learning architectures most used in the literature: YOLOv7 and Faster RCNN. The approach is developed in 4 phases: (i) acquisition of the dataset, (ii) development of architectures, (iii) performance evaluation and (iv) analysis of results. Both architectures focus on the use of a public dataset composed of a total of 9,327 images of Intraoral Photographs classified into 3 classes: “teeth with cavities” (0), “teeth without cavities” (1) and “teeth with amalgam” (2). A web system was built with the model that had the best performance. The results showed that t...
