The main goal of this article is to propose estimators for the Spatial Lag Model (SLM) under missing data context. We present three alternatives estimators for the SLM based on Two Stage Least Squares estimation methodology. The estimators are eÿcient within their type and consistent under random missing data in the dependent variable. Unlike the IBG2SLS estimator presented in Wang and Lee (2013) which impute all missing data we only impute missing data in the spatial lag. Our first proposal is an alternative version of the IBG2SLS estimator, the second one is based on an approximation to the optimal instruments matrix and the third one is an alternative equivalent to the first. Thorough a Monte Carlo simulation we assess the estimators performance under finite samples. Results show a good performance for all estimators, moreover, results are quite similar to the IBG2SLS estimator sugge...

Conventional performance indicators, especially after recent financial restructuring initiatives, are criticized more than ever for not associating performance and risk. The purpose of this study is to benchmark performance of banks in comparison to risk-taking preferences, under different models with data envelopment analysis, to evaluate whether risks are reasonably priced. Comparing a bank’s risk efficiency with its competitors may provide additional insights to regulatory and supervisory authorities together with bank management. The results indicate that profitability of banks is not necessarily parallel with their risk-taking preferences. Banks with low risk efficiency should revise their business style for potential improvements.

The main hypotesis of this article relys on the Colonial social relationship and the neoclassicists philosophy as the roots of Latin America authoritarian rule. From the concept of “natural” human being, patronizing and clientelism drove to an asymmetric relationship between authority and individuals within a corporative society. Although the Borbonism and liberalism had been strong dynamic forces, they were unsuccessful for changing such scheme and only a secularization process could timidly be carried on. For consequence, the Latin America politic modernization went on an authoritarian way, turning to populism, whereas individual became subaltern of the State; so, citizenship become indefinitely postponed.

Background: Pediatric Early Warning Systems (PEWS) assist early detection of clinical deterioration in hospitalized children with cancer. Relevant to successful PEWS implementation, the “stages of change” model characterizes stakeholder support for PEWS based on willingness and effort to adopt the new practice. Methods: At five resource-limited pediatric oncology centers in Latin America, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 71 hospital staff involved in PEWS implementation. Purposive sampling was used to select centers requiring variable time to complete PEWS implementation, with low-barrier centers (3–4 months) and high-barrier centers (10–11 months). Interviews were conducted in Spanish, professionally transcribed, and translated into English. Thematic content analysis explored “stage of change” with constant comparative analysis across stakeholder types and stud...

This study aims at understanding the behavior of economic elites in the Third World.Because economic elites concentrate the property of physical capital in society, theiractions influence the living conditions of the masses. The literature on the elite's behavioris, however, very limited. This study is an attempt to take some steps to fill this gap.The behavior that is emphasized is the investment in social capital. A theory of socialnetworks is thus proposed. A prediction of the theory is that the accumulation of socialcapital depends on the same set of factors that explain the accumulation of physicalcapital. Therefore, the economic elites do not circulate endogenously. The case of Peruis examined in the light of this theory. The results show consistency with the predictionsof the theory. The conclusion of this study is not in accord with the usual optimism laiddown on social capital a...

TAM (Technology Acceptance Model) is used in Computer Science research to collect feedback from users of Information Systems (SI). In various research on the adoption of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), TAM has been widely used and adapted depending on the needs of researchers through the incorporation of new factors. The paper aims to present the systematic review focused on the models used in education to accept the inclusion of new information and communication technologies. A total number of identified primary studies were 61. The results show that TAM has been used to explain user adoption of e-learning, web 2.0, and m-learning. The factors most commonly used were PU (perceived utility) and PEOU (perceived ease of use).

In this paper, a mathematical model based on uncertainties to describe the potential interrelation between unemployment and poverty by using the Shannon’s entropy is presented. Essentially, when social systems that are characterized by having a large number of variables and interact among them, one can expect a kind of disorder affecting the main functionalities would have to be exhibited by any modern society. Thus, Shannon’s entropy fits well the social phenomenology as to describe through uncertainties these interrelations. Moreover, it was added to this debate the idea that geographical divisions might also to be relevant as to understand the transition from unemployment to poverty. Finally, the theoretical results are discussed.

Due to the increase in air pollution, especially in Latin American countries of low and middle income, great environmental and health risks have been generated, highlighting that there is more pollution in closed environments. Given this problem, it has been proposed to develop a system based on free hardware for monitoring air quality and CO2, in order to reduce the levels of air pollution in a closed environment, improving the quality of life of people and contributing to the awareness of the damage caused to the environment by the hand of man himself. The system is based on V-Model, complemented with a ventilation prototype implemented with sensors and an application for its respective monitoring. The sample collected in the present investigation was non-probabilistic, derived from the reports of air indicators during 15 days with specific schedules of 9am, 1pm and 6pm. The results ob...

The purpose of this paper is to elucidate how the Dalenius-Hodges stratification methodology typically used in sampling, when combined with ranking and index standardization procedures, becomes a powerful policy tool for classifying and benchmarking global information society (GIS) phenomena. The Dalenius-Hodges methodology is preferable to other popular benchmarking methodologies; it has an objective criterion in demarcating strata boundaries and a standardized procedure of compiling indexes irrespective of the nature of the variables and is conceptually simple and easy to compute. For studying GIS phenomena, the paper proposes a socio-technology model, focusing on nine basic variables apportioned under information communications technology (ICT) access, diffusion, usage, and skills. The model uses raw data extracted from 154 International Telecommunication Union (ITU) member countries ...

Criminal compliance is an effective and suitable mechanism to prevent and detect legal violations in companies, since they are independent subjects of imputation, different from the persons who make them up. The study is based on the theoretical foundations of this legal figure and the regulatory framework stipulated in the law that regulates the administrative responsibility of legal persons (Law 30424), its regulations and the guidelines of the Superintendency of the Securities Market of Peru. Likewise, its conceptualization, function and practical utility are explored. It is concluded that a regulatory compliance program should not only be assessed in terms of its functions to exempt or mitigate the penalty of a company, but also for its economic utility due to the security perceived by a company that has a program that manages business risks and handles optimal prevention, identifica...
