Benthic organisms have been proposed as good indicators of disturbance in marine environments, particularly because most toxins fall to the bottom of the sea affecting benthic communities. A non-invasive method for collecting coelomocytes was developed using the marine polychaete Eurythoe complanata with potential applications in xenobiotic toxicology. The extrusion method used produced the expulsion of 95% of the coelomic fluid, showing a greater efficiency than the puncture method in Lumbricus terrestris with regard to the total number of coelomocytes and cellular viability. The total coelomocyte count by this method was 6 -1 6 -12.6 x 10 cells·mL vs 1.4 x 10 cells·mL for the puncture method. The results indicate that coelomocyte numbers completely recover at 20 days after extrusion, using the total cell count, cell viability and differential count. This method was developed to study...

The objective of this study was to evaluate the quality of raw milk in seven representative basins of the region Puno. The results were compared with the standards established by the International Standard for milk and milk products NTP 200.001-2003 and the Official Mexican Standard NOM-155-SCFI-2012 for the parameters of protein and lactose in the absence of Peruvian parameters. For physicochemical characterization pH, acidity, density, fat, protein, lactose, total solids, fat solids was determined microbiological analysis of E. coli and mesophilic, just as we also performed the study spanned pesticide residue analysis such as organochlorines, organophosphates, carbamates and pyrethroids with sensitivity 1.0ug/g sample which gave negative results for the four groups of pesticides, the physicochemical determinations over 50% of the basins (except for pH and acidity) is found within the s...

With the beginning of the Industrial Era, specially after the II World War, man lives exposed progressively to more pollutants and has confronted huge environmental disasters like Minamata, Bophal, and Chernovyl. Cadmium is an environmental and industrial toxic pollutant that produces in man effects at the enzymatic, renal, respiratory and digestive levels, aggravated by its very extended mean life. To face this problem, we would have to make a survey of the principal sources of industrial pollution, mainly metallurgic, in order to protect the worker, applying TLVs and BEIs criteria concurrent with the state of the art.

In occupational health to control risk magnitude we apply threshold limit values. Man at high altitude has anatomical-physiological variants in his respiratory system; most important are increases in thoracic capacity, pulmonary ventilation, alveolar/capillary diffusion, and arterial oxygen content. Physiological safe work at high altitude consists in the organism not using extra energy to compensate barometric pressure fall. In respiratory occupational toxicology we must initiate correction when ventilatory response to hypobaric hypoxia becomes unsafe and this occurs at 8 000 feet above sea level. Accordingly we should correct exposure limits value applying to work at high altitude. In order to establish safe parameters of toxicological exposition at high altitude it is necessary to investigate these aspects in high altitude workers.

The aim of this research was to use the benthic macroinvertebrates (MIB) and toxicological assessment tests to evaluate the water and sediment quality of the Rimac river (Lima-Peru) in wet and dry seasons in 2009. Twelve sampling stations (E1 to E12) were established, considering the sources of contamination. At each station, physical and chemical data, MIB, and water and sediment toxicity with Daphnia magna and Chironomus calligraphus were measured. The wet season had higher pH; however, higher values of specific conductivity, total solids, dissolved oxygen and transparency were observed in the dry season. Differences in the abundance of Planorbidae, Baetidae, Chironomidae, Tipulidae and Empididae were observed between wet and dry seasons. The diversity and evenness index were higher in wet season, but the dominance and abundance index were higher in the dry season. The dendrogram...

The growing interest in natural medicine makes it necessary to study plant properties as well as their possible secondary effects. In recent years the toxic effects of many medicinal plants on the preimplantational mouse embryo development have been studied. Many of them produce malformations and alterations in the embryonic development. Ruta graveolens "ruda", Origanum vulgare "oregano" and Persea americana "palta" are used in rural areas to menstrual colic and to provoke abortion (estrella, 1995). This study is aimed at assessing "in vivd'the effect of extracts of "oregano", "ruda" and "palta" to 20% on the morphology and growth of preimplantational mouse embryos.

Potato tocosh is a naturally processed potato for nutritional and curative purposes from traditional Peruvian medicine. The aim of this study was to investigate the acute and sub-acute toxicity of tocosh flour (TF). For sub-acute toxicity, TF was administered orally to rats daily once a day for 28 days at doses of 1000 mg/kg body weight (BW). Animals were observed for general behaviors, mortality, body weight variations, and histological analysis. At the end of treatment, relative organ weights, histopathology, hematological and biochemical parameters were analyzed. For acute toxicity, TF was administered orally to mice at doses of 2000 and 5000 mg/kg BW at a single dose in both sexes. Body weight, mortality, and clinical signs were observed for 14 days after treatment. The results of acute toxicity showed that the median lethal dose (LD50) value of TF is higher than 2000 g/kg BW but les...

Snakebite envenoming is a neglected public pathology, affecting especially rural communities or isolated areas of tropical and subtropical Latin American countries. The parenteral administration of antivenom is the mainstay and the only validated treatment of snake bite envenoming. Here, we assess the efficacy of polyspecific anti-Bothrops serum (α-BS) produced in the Instituto Nacional de Salud (INS, Peru) and at the Fundação Ezequiel Dias (FUNED, Brazil), to neutralize the main toxic activities induced by five medically-relevant venoms of: Bothrops atrox, B. barnetti, and B. pictus from Peru, and the Brazilian B. jararaca and B. leucurus, all of them inhabiting different geographical locations.
