La investigación se clasifica como aplicada y explicativa, centrándose en mejorar la durabilidad y capacidad de carga del pavimento para soportar la alta demanda vehicular y las condiciones climáticas locales. Para alcanzar este objetivo, se realizaron tres pasos clave: un estudio de mecánica de suelos para caracterizar la subrasante, un análisis de tráfico para determinar los ejes equivalentes (ESALs) que el pavimento deberá soportar, y la aplicación del método AASHTO 93 para calcular los espesores óptimos de cada capa estructural del pavimento. Los resultados permitieron definir una estructura de pavimento que maximiza la vida útil y minimiza la necesidad de mantenimiento preventivo y correctivo, adaptándose a las condiciones geotécnicas y de tránsito específicas de la carretera Colán - Paita. La investigación concluye que el uso del método AASHTO 93 permite un diseño más eficiente y económico del pavimento, reduciendo los costos de mantenimiento a largo plazo y mejorando la transitabilidad de la vía. La implementación de estos resultados contribuirá al desarrollo de infraestructura vial en la región, favoreciendo la conectividad y el desarrollo económico local
