In this article, we present the results of the excavactions conducted in severa! structures that were found in association with geoglyphs located in the Palpa Province, within the northern side of the Rio Grande Basin. Toe geoglyphs were built over slopes and plateaus that are placed within and long the Rio Grande, Palpa and Viseas Valleys. The reported data indicate that the construction of these geoglyphs started during the middle developmental stage of the Paracas Culture (ca. 500 B.C.) and ended with the final development of the Nasca Culture (A.O. 650). During this time, and specially during the Nasca time, the slopes and plateaus formed part of an active social landscape, where geoglyphs became the scenario for important festive and religious activities. Among them, activites realted to water and fertility cults were remarkable. These activities rnight have taken place in the sto...

Recent research in the Palpa valleys, in the northern section of the Rio Grande of Nasca drainage, has revealed many archaeological evidences (settlements, funerary structures, diverse materials and remains of daily life). This evidence is shedding new light on the intensity and nature of the Wari occupation in the south coast of Peru. Excavations in many sites with evidence of Wari occupation in the coast, the Yunga Desertica, and the highlands, help us to understand the strong integration that existed amongst different ecological zones and the interest that motivated the Wari to occupy the Palpa and Nasca valleys. In this context, the evidence registered until now in the Palpa valleys indicated that the south coast, and specially the Rio Grande drainage, had an important role in the Wari strategy of expansion and control in the region, allowing the access to resources not existent in t...

There are many unanswered questions about the population history of the Central and South Central Andes, particularly regarding the impact of large-scale societies, such as the Moche, Wari, Tiwanaku, and Inca. We assembled genome-wide data on 89 individuals dating from ~9000-500 years ago (BP), with a particular focus on the period of the rise and fall of state societies. Today’s genetic structure began to develop by 5800 BP, followed by bi-directional gene flow between the North and South Highlands, and between the Highlands and Coast. We detect minimal admixture among neighboring groups between ~2000-500 BP, although we do detect cosmopolitanism (people of diverse ancestries living side-by-side) in the heartlands of the Tiwanaku and Inca polities. We also reveal cases of long-range mobility connecting the Andes to Argentina, and the Northwest Andes to the Amazon Basin.
