The DNA replication is disrupted by Busulfan which is a bifunctional alquilant as an ester agent. High dose of this compound are applied before transplants of bone marrow and germ cells. However quantification of the damage to the reproductive system and its recovery have not been established. The aim of this study was to quantify both spermatogenesis and spermiogenesis recovery in mice from damage caused by an injection of Busulfan. We used Balb C mice which were evaluated 30, 54 and 72 days after the intraperitoneal injection of 40 mg/kg body weight. We took the following variables: testicular weight, spermatic concentration in epididimus line and histological cuts to measure the diameter of the seminiferous tubules. Results were analyzed with the test U Mann-Whitney p>0.05. By day 30, testicular weight, spermatic concentration and diameter of the seminiferous tubules were reduced t...

Oocyte in vitro maturation (IVM) is a reproductive technique that generates oocytes capable of supporting preimplantation embryo development and its complete development, which has been used for a long time in animals but in humans is still an emerging technology. In the last decade, studies have been conducted in order to improve the efficacy of that technology; results obtained by using commercially available media are still inferior to reproductive techniques as in vitro fertilization (IVF). However, collection of mature oocytes in gonadotropins’ hyperstimulated cycles increases the risk of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) and none of the strategies used to predict its occurrence has completely eliminated the risk. For that reason, implementation of IVM procedures shows interesting perspectives in patients with polycystic ovary (PCO) and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), can...

Free fetal DNA (ffDNA) was discovered over a decade ago and since research has been focused in discovering its origin, how the mother metabolizes it and how to use the information that it contains for clinical diagnosis. Some of these questions have been answered; however, more research is needed. Currently, clinical applications include use of ffDNA as a tool in sex determination of the baby during the first trimester, in the prediction of future pregnancy complications, and in the diagnosis of monogenic diseases. The aim of this article is to provide an overview of current ffDNA applications in prenatal genetic diagnosis.

In vitro oocyte maturation is not yet considered a well-established technique in in vitro fertilization (IVF) laboratories. This is due to a lower pregnancy rates. However in the last few years, reports have shown similar pregnancy rates compared to the conventional IVF techniques. The current report describes the first baby born after an IVM treatment in combination with extended blastocyst culture in Peru.

Introduction: Freezing-unfreezing procedures are essential when hyperestimulation is followed by embryo overproduction; they lower costs and increase pregnancy rates per aspiration. Objectives: To present our experience with embryo freezing-unfreezing. Setting: Assisted Reproduction Medical Service and Laboratory, Clinica Ricardo Palma. Design: Clinical retrospective study. Biologic material: Embryos obtained by assisted fertilization. Interventions: Controlled ovarian hyperestimulation with short luteal phase, ova capture at 36 hours post hCG administration, classical in vitro fertilization or ICSI-transport, classical processes of embryo cryopreservation and unfreezing. Main outcome measures: Embryo survival in freezing-unfreezing process. Results: We started our study in October 2003. Number of cycles with frozen embryos during this period was 154; from these we unfroze only 58. Pregn...

Acrosin is one of the principal components in the acrosome, has trypsin-like activity and is secreted after the Acrosome Reaction (RA). The aim of this study was to study the induction of the acrosomal reaction in mouse sperms with homologous- Pellucid Zone and heterologous- Pellucid Zone. Mouse sperms were capacitated by two hours in IVF medium, supplemented with albumin, heparin and synthetic serum to 37 °C and 5% CO2 , and before they were incubated in absence of ZP and in present of solubilized ZP from mouse (0,78 mg/ml) and alpaca (0,78 mg/ml y 2,35 mg/ml). The RA was evaluated through immunocytochemistry with monoclonal antibodies anti-human acrosin C5F10 within intervals of 1 hour during four hours. The results show a signifi cant increase (p<0,05) in acrosome reaction induced with homologous-ZP and heterologous-ZP.

Uterine arteriovenous malformation (UAMV) is an abnormal connection between arteries and veins, lacking an intermediate capillary network, which compromises the myometrium and can cause life-threatening hemorrhage. Generally secondary to gynecobstetric surgical procedures such as uterine curettage, cesarean sections, conservative treatments forectopic pregnancy, etc., its diagnosis depends fundamentally on an adequate transvaginal ultrasonographic and Dopplerevaluation, in order to perform accurate and timely treatment, with the intention of preserving the uterus and thus fertility

Introduction: Interstitial ectopic pregnancy is a rare condition with increasing incidence due to assisted reproductive treatments and prior tubal surgeries. Case presentation: This report describes the case of a 34-year old patient with a history of bilateral adnexectomy due to borderline ovarian cancer, who developed an interstitial ectopic pregnancy following in vitro fertilization with donated eggs. Management involved a minimally invasive approach with ultrasound-guided intrasac methotrexate injection at a dose of 1 mg/kg. The patient remained clinically stable, experienced mild hypogastric pain, and showed a progressive decrease in beta-hCG levels, confirming treatment success. Conclusion: This case underscores the role of transvaginal ultrasound as a pivotal tool for early diagnosis and conservative management, aimed at uterine preservation and fertility.
