This paper shed light on analyzing the effect of the Pandemic on Venezuelan Migrants’ Income in Peru. The Covid 19 Pandemic (Coronavirus Pandemic) enforced governments to apply the “Hammer Blow” which produced recession and consequently unemployment. Governments offset the latter effect by applying some subsidies to the Poor. The subsidy was not delivered to Venezuelan Immigrants in Peru. Therefore, our study attempts to explore the effect of the Coronavirus Pandemic on the Income of Venezuelan Immigrants. The study controls for gender and discrimination. Since 2017, the economic and political situation in Venezuela triggered migration beyond their frontiers. Peru is the second country with the high migration of Venezuelans, the first is Colombia which is the neighborhood. The migration reduced the labor force in the country that receives the population but in some cases, the delin...

Despite the financial sector liberalization and openness that started in the earlier 90's and significant macroeconomic development as well as increasing inflow of capital toward the region, there is not any evidence of the reduction of interest rates as well as banks' profits in Latin America. In this paper we develop a model to estimate the determinants of Latin American banks' profitability and, try to understand the reasons why banks are reluctant to decrease their interest rate spreads even when change in competitiveness in the financial system is improving. By using Data Envelopment Analysis to better exploit the information of several variables at the same time and, by employing a sample of 200 Banks located in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Mexico, Nicaragua, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela; we find that banks' profits grew consistently above ...

In this paper I study the main determinants of successful reaccess to international capital markets on a set of emerging market countries after a financial crisis. I focus on three components of the reaccess strategy: commitment to pay, ability to pay, and global liquidity. I employ a panel of 49 countries over a nearly 30-year period and apply a simple probit approach to show that, indeed, a sound external position and a sustainable debt profile, accompanied by a favorable global liquidity environment, are the key considerations for creditors considering whether to resume lending.

In the last years, we have been witnesses of significant large rates of return in most Latin-American private pension fund institutions (PPF). This outstanding performance of funds can be explained by an economic boom in the region. However, these funds have lately been hampered in some countries, something that contrasts with the successful performance of private pension funds’ returns. We measure management performance with the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) technique, and test a sample of eight countries in Latin America to determine if there is any vulnerability in the private pension funds. The results are relevant for policy makers and regulators of pension funds.

This study attempts to uncover the institutional determinants of female entrepreneurship in a set of eight Latin American countries. Following the institutional system classification in the literature, we grouped the set of countries into three categories: State-Led, Emerging Liberal Market, and Family Led. We then split the data panel into two different groups: Argentina, Bolivia, Ecuador, and Venezuela, which are mostly State-Led; the other group includes Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, and Peru, which are either Family Led or Emerging Liberal Market Oriented where the degree of State intervention in the economy is lower. Our research investigated these institutional determinants of female entrepreneurship using a set of socioeconomic, cognitive, and macroeconomic variables. Our findings offer a new perspective on gender entrepreneurship in Latin America, considering internal and exte...

The following paper analyzes income discrimination during the recent Venezuelan migration in Peru. We use the survey “Encuesta Dirigida a la Población Venezolana (ENPOVE)” in order to proceed with our assessment. The ENPOVE surveys were conducted in 2018 with 9,487respondents (3,611 houses). The survey enabled the collection of socioeconomic variables and discrimination perceptions of Venezuelan residents in Tumbes, La Libertad, Arequipa, Cusco, Lima, and Callao. The results allow us to investigate the Peruvian labor market for low-skilled immigrant workers.

The paper shed the light in analyzing the efficiency of Peruvian Government Financial Support in comparison with some countries in the Latin American Region and worldwide. The Covid 19 Pandemic enforced governments to apply the “Hammer Blow” which affected negatively the economy producing recession and unemployment. Governments offset the latter effect by applying subsidy policies to the Poor and then reduce the negative economic consequences of the general lockdown without getting COVID. Our study performs a Difference and Difference Model (DID) to evaluate the effectiveness of the latter policy.

This paper analyses the possible determinants that induced Silicon Valley and First Republic Bank to Bankruptcy. We employ financial statements for a sample of Banks in line with the business core of Silicon Valley Bank. The period under assessment ranges from 2006-2022. We estimate an indicator of Bank Efficiency using the technique Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). The latter indicator is used as the primary step to analyze failure within sample banks. According to the CAMEL model, macroeconomic variables are non-significant but relevant variables that drive failure were: Bank Efficiency, Capital adequacy, Earning ability, and Liquidity position ratio. Our study is relevant for any policy making to prevent any future bank failure.

We are proud to release the 44th issue of the Journal of Economics, Finance and Administrative Science, edited by Emerald Publishing and indexed to the most prestigious databases, like Scopus. We are now ranked in the third percentile in Scimago. This is the result of the rigorous work that takes into account the demanding academic standards. The first article is “Determinants and forecast of the stock market activity of the Colombian Stock Market”. Using monthly data from 2007 to 2016, the authors found that stock market activity can be predicted in a large part by its lags, positive returns in the past three months, primary issues and the VIX index. The next article, titled “Competitive strategies and sport management”, uses resource-based theory to develop a model that integrates organizational actions with the variables that can moderate their impact on the performance of foo...

During the last few years, there has been a large increase in the rate of return for most Latin American private pension fund institutions (AFPs). This favorable performance of funds comes with an economic boom in the region. However, efficiency, which is the equivalent of good management, does not go along with this successful performance of AFPs. We measure efficiency with the Data Envelopment Analysis technique, and we test for a sample of 9 countries in Latin America to determine if there is any link between efficiency of AFPs and their rate of return. The results suggest that local market power is not necessarily sufficient for certain large AFPs.

The following paper studies the determinants of choosing a private pension fund institution by processing a questionnaire of 514 affiliates. The questionnaire attempts to measure perceptions of the consumer with respect to their private pension fund institution. Using a structural equation model, we found that socioeconomic variables are irrelevant but some perceptions like the return of portfolio and leadership of the private pension fund were relevant in the choice of a private pension fund institution. We contrast the model in two different periods of time between 2009 and 2016. The periods before and after financial turmoil in the stock market.

The following paper analyses the sustainability of the Peruvian “Pay as You Go System” which is provided by the Government. In Peru, the “Pay as you Go System” coexists with Private Pension Funds or “Fully Funded Pension”. Sometimes both systems compete with each other with advantages and disadvantages between them. We found that “Pay as You Go System” cannot be sustainable over a long period of time. In addition, based on a comparative analysis of advantages and disadvantages, we propose some recommendations to make Private Pension Funds (Fully Funded Pension) the best alternative to Pay as You Go System.
