The purpose of the study was to evaluate the effect of yacon meal as a prebiotic in rations for Muscovy ducks. One hundred and fifty male ducks of seven weeks of age were used. The ducks were grouped in five treatments: T0, control (without yacon and antibiotic); T1, zinc bacitracin 0.035%; T2, T3 and T4, yacon meal at 0.25, 0.50 and 0.75% respectively. Treatments T1, T2 and T4 resulted in higher body weight gain as compared to T0 (p<0.05). No differences were observed between treated groups and T0 on feed consumption. Feed conversion index was significantly better in T1, T3 and T4 as compared to T0 (p<0.05). The cost of feed per unit of body weight gain was lower in T1, T2, T3 and T4 as compared to T0. The inclusion of 0.75% of yacon meal in the diet would be an alternative to the use of antibiotics in rations of ducks during the fattening phase.

The aim of this study was to determine the effect of spirulina (Arthrospira platensis) on productive performance (WG: weight gain, FI: feed intake, FCR: feed conversion ratio, EPEI: European productive efficiency index) and intestinal morphometry (VL: villus length, VW: villus width, CD: crypt depth) in broilers. In total, 240 one-day-old male chicks from the Cobb 500 line were used, distributed into four treatments with six replicates of 10 chicks each. The treatments were: T0: base diet without spirulina (control), T1: base diet with 0.25% spirulina, T2: base diet with 0.5% spirulina, T3: base diet with 1% spirulina. A completely randomized block design was used. The effect of increasing levels of spirulina was evaluated by linear and quadratic polynomial orthogonal contrasts. The WG and FI variables showed quadratic trend while FCR and EPEI showed linear trend. The optimal level of ...

The aim of this study was to compare the productive performance of two guinea pig meat lines (Cavia porcellus) reared in the central coast of Peru. Two genetic lines of guinea pigs were used during the growth and fattening stage: a group of 20 male guinea pig, progeny of improved guinea pigs in the Peruvian highlands, meat line G, and another group of 20 improved male guinea pigs in the Peruvian coast, meat line H. The guinea pigs were reared in individual cages from weaning (15 ± 2 days) until week 11, receiving the same diet based on Zea mays var. indurata, wheat bran and fresh water. The birth weight for guinea pigs G and H was 146.5 ± 28.2 and 119.0 ± 19.2 g, respectively, the weaning weight was 306.5 ± 49.1 and 227.0 ± 58.2, respectively, and the weight at week 11 was 965.5 ± 100.2 and 868.0 ± 91.6, respectively (p<0.05 in all cases). No significant difference was found in...

The dry matter (DM) production of alfalfa (Medicago sativa), Caraveli variety, was evaluated per cut and per year, and its persistence over time in a prairie of the IVITA-Huaral Station of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, San Marcos University (Lima, Peru). The pasture was installed in the spring of 2011 in 1 ha of land in beds of 3 x 40 m, using the method of hand sowing (35 kg/ha). Irrigation was performed periodically. The cultivation was grazed with dairy cows, from the third cut when it presented 10% flowering. A total of 28 cuts were done between December 2011 and November 2014. The DM in the first, second and third year had a mean per cut of 373.3, 395.0 and 409.6 g/m2, respectively (p<0.05). The number of plants per area decreased significantly within year (p<0.05), without affecting the production of dry matter.

The study aimed to compare the body weight, and cardiac indices, hematocrit and hemoglobin as indicators of cardiac activity of two turkey commercial lines reared at sea level. Thirty five turkeys from each line were used in the study. Body weight (PC) was recorded from the 4th to the 14th week of age where birds were slaughtered. There, blood samples were collected for measuring hematocrit and hemoglobin levels. Also, hearts were collected to determine the following ratios: weight of right ventricle/total ventricle (VD/VT), weight of left ventricle/total ventricle (VI/VT), weight of left ventricle + septum/ total ventricle (VI+S/VT), VI/PC, VD/PC, VI+S/PC, and VT/PC. Body weight and haemoglobin in BUT turkeys were higher (p<0.05) and hematocrit was higher (p<0.05) in Hybrid turkeys. No statistical differences were found on VD/VT, VI/VT, (VI+S)/VT, and VD/PC between lines, but high...

The aim of this study was to evaluate the productive performance of laying quails (Coturnix coturnix japonica). The study was carried out at the poultry farm of the La Molina National Agrarian University in Lima, Peru. In total, 1296 quail distributed in 96 females and 48 males of three ages (45, 52 and 59 days) with 130, 140 and 150 g of body weight, respectively, at the beginning of the laying were used. A random block design with a 32 factorial arrangement was used, taking as factors age and weight at the beginning of laying and as a block the weeks of laying (8, 11 and 17). The highest egg mass (10.72 ± 0.41 g/day/bird) was obtained when the quails started laying with 150 g of live weight.

The aim of this study was to relate morphometric measurements of the Coturnix coturnix japonica quail egg with the weight at birth in a commercial line of laying. In total, 274 birds were evaluated at one-day old, whose fertile eggs were classified into three categories according to weight: (1) 10.00-10.99, (2) 11.00-11.99, (3) 12.00-12.99 g for the variable birth weight, while the variables: transverse diameter and longitudinal diameter of the egg, and shape index were evaluated according to quartiles. In addition, the sex of the bird was evaluated. A completely randomized block model and correlations between the quantitative variables were used. A mean correlation of 0.65 was obtained between egg weight and longitudinal diameter, and low correlations between the variables longitudinal and transverse diameter (0.15). The birth weight was 7.36 ± 0.038, 7.92 ± 0.036 and 8.47 ± 0.058 g ...
