Throughout the world, interest toward the search of natural sources of betacarotene has beenincreased due to its wide use as a colorant and antioxidant agent in pharmaceutical, cosmetic and food industries. In order to isolate Archaea halophilics betacarotene producers, salt samples from solar saltems located in Huacho were taken and cultured in sea water agar (SWA) supplemented with 20% NaCl and 0.5% yeast extract.. From the 25 microorganisms isolated, 12 which presented difierent reddish cellular pigmentation were chosen. Selected isolates were analyzed to determine their cellular growth and ability to produce betacarotene, being the isolate W2 which obtained the highest cellular pigmentation index. Besides, optimal concentration of NaCl and yeast extract to increase the production of betacarotene was determined. Isolate W2 was identified as Haloferax gibbonsii of the Archaea domain by...

The influence of hypobaric hypoxia on protein oxidation in lungs, heart, liver, kidneys and testicles of high altitude native guinea pigs (Huancavelica, 3660 m) in comparison to sea level (Lima, 150 m) native guinea pigs was evaluated. The concentration of protein hydroperoxides (POOH) and carbonyl groups (GC) as markers of protein oxidation, as well as total thiols (TT) concentration, powerful reducing agents that act as live antioxidants were determined. The results showed low concentration of GC in high altitude guinea pig testicles, as compared to what was found at sea level. POOH low concentration was also found in high altitude guinea pig heart with respect to that found at sea level. TT concentration was lower in high altitude heart and lungs in relation to the concentrations found at sea level. Contrary to these results, higher concentrations of POOH in high altitude guinea pig l...

The aim of this study was to determine serum myeloperoxidase (MPO) level, an enzyme considered as an inflammation indicator, in a high altitude population and in another at sea level, and establish the association of this enzyme with risk factors apt to develop a cardiometabolic disease. Blood samples were collected from 42 subjects in Mala (30 m - Lima) and from 65 people native to Carhuamayo (Junin 4100 m). Weight, height and blood pressure were measured. Hemoglobin (Hb) was determined in whole blood; glucose, total cholesterol, high density lipoproteins, triglycerides and MPO were determined in serum. The results show that with the exception of weight, height and Hb, no significant gender differences between the averages of other variables in both groups were observed. When comparing both populations, highly significant differences in weight (< 0,001), BMI (< 0,001), Hb (< 0,...
