The maternal mortality ratio (MM) in Peru for the year 2020 has been estimated at 81.6 per 100,000 live births, negatively moving away from the downward curve of maternal deaths which from 114.2 per 100,000 live births in 2004 had declined to 55.1 per 100,000 live births in 2019(1). Peru has the same number of maternal deaths to date as in 2012(2). There has been a considerable delay in the goal of reducing maternal mortality, in order to comply with the Millennium Development Goals(3). The explanation for this adverse situation is the COVID-19 infection, which has plagued the world since the beginning of 2020.

Probably the vaginal discharge is one of the most frequent reasons for consultation and for not being a disease that severely compromises the health of women, usually not given the importance it really has. Importance should have if one places the problem of what it means as an element that can significantly alter the quality of life of women who have it. We therefore consider it important to clearly define the different causes, proper diagnosis, management and treatment.

A brief evidence-based account on the importance of micronutrients and oligoelements in the diet during pregnancy and post-partum is done. An integral approach on nutrition must be given to women during reproductive life as well as before pregnancy. Micronutrient deficiencies have been associated with fetal structural defects risks. Micronutrient supplementation during pregnancy has shown to be effective in the prevention of different health problems including low birth weight, small for gestational age, and birth defects including neural, cardiovascular, cleft palate and abnormalities of the urinary tract. There is no evidence of protection against genetic problems type Down syndrome, or in reduction of perinatal mortality.

In all countries and in all times, abortion has been and remains a health problem with broad social impact; but in less developed countries where the socioeconomic conditions are critical, abortion causes dramatic situations with a very high social cost compromising the health and lives of women who experience it, either accidentally or on purpose.
