Retinopathy of prematurity is the leading cause of childhood blindness in Peru and in many countries whose survival rate in newborns of very low birth weight has increased, this due to the largest biotech support in the management of intensive care neonatal. It is considered appropriate to review the aspects related to the pathophysiology, multifactorial etiology and epidemiology of this disease. Screening methods used with associated risk factors, the international classification in the diagnosis and current and experimental treatments based on multicenter studies with the respective recommendations are also emphasized. Finally pathological eye is exposed to increased risk of suffering those infants with a history of retinopathy of prematurity.

Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) is a vaso-proliferative retinopathy affecting immature infants whose etiology is stillunknown. Some studies have suggested an association between preeclampsia and this pathology. A study was conducted toshow whether preeclampsia is related to the incidence of retinopathy in preterm infants in the National Maternal and PerinatalInstitute. The retrospective, longitudinal -control comparative cases study involves premature very low birth weight (<1500 g.)And less than 32 weeks, born between January 1, 2013 to December 31, 2014 that met inclusion criteria. 201 patients wereconsidered and they were divided into two groups, one with a history of having been born of preeclamptic mother (studio)and one without this background (control) .Both groups were homogeneous in age, sex, weight. the incidence of ROP in bothgroups were compared, showing some degree of RO...

One of the clinical problems that the doctor in an emergency faces daily is the red eye. Most cases are relatively benign and self-limiting; however, some conditions are associated with high morbidity and are potentially threatening to vision and may initially manifest as a red eye. The doctor must be attentive to look for the high risk factors in the clinical history and the examination, to determine those cases that can be treated in the emergency without the intervention of the ophthalmologist and others that must be evaluated by the specialist urgently because of the imminent danger of visual loss. The differential diagnosis of the red eye is extensive, however, the most frequent cases include: conjunctivitis of multiple etiology, subconjunctival hemorrhages, episcleritis, scleritis, anterior uveitis and acute angle-closure congestiveglaucoma, which is one of the most important emerg...

Primary congenital glaucoma (PCG) or primary infantile glaucoma (PIG) is a rare disease that presents a characteristic clinical picture with a clear identity. Because it is primary, it has no association with other syndromes and ocular anomalies, with increased intraocular pressure (IOP) due to poor development of the excretory part of the aqueous humor drainage, in the structures of the trabecular meshwork, ergo PCG is a product of poor development from the tissues of the angle of the anterior chamber that are embryologically derived from neural crest cells. Its rare presentation, with recessive inheritance of variable penetrance and very likely multifactorial inheritance makes it difficult for its study, follow-up and treatment that is focused on lowering IOP as soon as possible, preparing the child for surgery. Classically the initial surgery can be goniotomy or trabeculotomy. The fai...

Objectives. A study was done to demonstrate if the ocular occlusion is related to the incidence of retinopathy in premature infants in the Maternal Perinatal Institute. Materials and methods. The analytical quasi-experimental study, includes all the premature babies of very low weight (<1301 grams.) and less than 32 weeks, born between January 01, 2005 to December 31, 2007. It was considered to be 201 patients who expired with the criteria of incorporation, they were divided in two groups, one of them whom became occlusion both eyes with mask of black fabric (study) and other one without occlusion exposed to the natural light of the environment (control). Results. The ROP’s incident was compared in both groups presenting some ROP’s degree 25 of 97 patients with eyes occluded (25,8 %) and 34 of 104 patients with eyes not occluded (32.7 %). Conclusions. It concludes that the occlusion...
