Abstract Introduction: SARS-CoV-2 infection can produce a hypercoagulable state and increase the risk of developing thrombotic events. Several observational studies have reported an association between D-dimer levels on admission and mortality from COVID-19. Objective: The objective of the present study was to determine the prognostic capacity of D-dimer in predicting mortality from COVID-19 in patients hospitalized in the Intensive Care Unit. Methods: An observational, analytical and retrospective cohort design was used. A sample size of 324 hospitalized patients was calculated, who were followed during the period January to July 2021 to evaluate the outcome of disease. For statistical analysis, the SPSS version 26 statistical package was used. Results: A cut-off point of 1.40 µg/mL was calculated for D-dimer values with a sensitivity of 80.9%, a specificity of 86.4% and area und...

Introduction: Acral lentiginous melanoma (ALM) is the fourth type of cutaneous melanoma and is the most common subtype in some countries in Latin America and Asia. The neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) is an inflammatory marker that has been shown to be useful as a prognostic tool in several malignant neoplasms. Objective: The objective of the study was to evaluate whether NLR has prognostic value in ALM. A retrospective study was conducted that included patients with ALM between 2010 and 2015. Methods: An observational, analytical and retrospective cohort design was used. We worked with a total population of 69 patients with the diagnosis of acral lentiginous melanoma. For the statistical analysis, the SPSS statistical package version 26 was used. Univariate and multivariate Cox proportional regression models were performed. Results: A total of 69 patients with ALM were included. The me...

Conclu...

Introduction: Primary gastric choriocarcinoma (PGC) is a rare and highly aggressive neoplasm that represents less than 0.1% of all gastric cancers. This neoplasm is often confused with gastric adenocarcinoma because it shares clinical, epidemiological and histopathological characteristics, so it is important to maintain a high suspicion of this entity. Case of report: A case of a 64-year-old woman who came to the hospital with non-specific gastrointestinal symptoms that arose anemia, fatigue and early fullness is presented. The endoscopic biopsy of the lesion revealed the presence of PGC in clinical stage IV that presented a partial response after 4 cycles of chemotherapy with the EMA/EP regimen (Etoposide 140 mg, Methotrexate 440 mg, Actinomycin D 0.5 mg/ Etoposide 220 mg, cisplatin 110 mg). Conclusion: To emphasize the poor prognosis of extragonadal choriocarcinomas in contrast to gona...

Sturge Weber syndrome (SSW) is characterized by the classic involvement of sporadic neuro-oculo-cutaneous vascular malformations, the pathophysiology of which to date has not been fully elucidated. The discovery of both an arterial and venous molecular profile in the endothelium present in vascular malformations, together with vascular atresia zones distal to the ectatic zones, have led to questioning the embryological theories put forward for decades, to explore the molecular and genetic characteristics in the affected tissue. Currently, a high prevalence of somatic mutation in the GNAQ gene has been reported in the affected tissues of patients with SSW, which encodes an alpha subunit of a Gq protein, whose signaling cascade stimulates cell proliferation, which may be responsible of the sustained growth of malformations in the three mentioned regions. The present study aims to explain th...
