A real time RT-PCR assay was standardized and validated for detection of classical swine fever virus (CSFV). Tonsil tissue and lymph nodules that were positive (n=36) and negative (n= 30) to CSFV by immunofluorescence test (IF) were selected. The viral RNA extraction, the complementary DNA (cDNA) synthesis and real time RT- PCR were performed using commercial kits. Three sets of primers were tested for amplification of a conserved region (5’UTR) of panpestivirus and 5’UTR Chinese strain and the E2 glycoprotein region (E2 PPC) against reference strains of CSFV: Alfort/187, Brescia, and a vaccine Chinese strain as positive controls, and strains of the bovine viral diarrhea virus, border disease virus and porcine rotavirus as negative controls. The 83.3 ± 12.3% (30/36) of positive simples to CSFV by IF test was positive for virus isolation and the 96.7 ± 3.3% (29/30) of negative sampl...

The clinical case of a 38-year-old female patient, seen in an emergency room in a New York hospital, who consults for abdominal pain, fever and fatigue is presented. Complementary studies show lymphopenia and slight alteration of transaminases. Abdominopelvic CT scan visualizes images in the lung bases, reticulonodular type. A sample was taken for COVID-19. She was managed in emergencies with parenteral hydration, antipyretics, oral antibiotics are indicated and social isolation measures are instructed. Two days later, it cost again, confirming positive COVID-19. It is followed on an outpatient basis, one week later with good clinical evolution. Additionally, a clinical review and pathophysiological explanation of the involvement of the digestive tract by the virus and the atypical form of presentation with abdominal pain are shown.

This research analyses the opinion articles about the COVID-19 published in the main newspapers of Italy, Spain and Germany. To this purpose, a qualitative inductive-deductive content analysis methodology has been used along two complementary phases. The first included the detailed analysis of the sample, and the second involved a method of comparative textual analysis using the Sketch Engine software. The results show the existence of some common issues about the virus, although with different approaches depending on the country: a certain vision marked by national politics in the Spanish case, an interpretative view in the case of Germany and a more social-humanistic perspective in the Italian dailies. A discourse contrary to generating panic is common in the three countries studied, but with a clear underestimation of the virus’ potential consequences in the first couple of months a...

Dicistroviruses are a family of viruses that affect invertebrates of sanitary and economic importance. Pigeons are also natural reservoirs of pathogens that have caused emerging and re-emerging diseases in humans. Twenty-five pigeons (24 Columba livia and one Zenaida auriculata) were captured in La Plata, Buenos Aires, between May and June 2019. Oropharyngeal/choana and then cloacal swabs were taken from each bird. RNA extraction was performed with Trizol®. For the analysis, 5 μl of total RNA was used for complementary DNA (cDNA) synthesis. The reaction was carried out using multiplex PCR (mPCR) as screening methodology in a final volume of 25 μl. This multiplex PCR amplifies six viruses. As a positive control, a sample previously isolated and characterized in the authors' laboratory as Israeli acute paralysis virus (IAPV) was used, and whose presence was confirmed by screening using ...

The objective of the study was the detection of canine parvovirus type 2 (CPV-2) in young dogs of Lima city with and without clinical symptoms compatible with parvovirus by the PCR technique using primers that can allow the amplification of a fragment of the gene coding for the protein VP2. Rectal swabs were collected from 78 dogs younger than one year old and without a history of previous vaccinations, of which 39 individuals had a clinical diagnosis of canine parvovirus and the other 39 were clinically healthy animals. For the extraction of viral DNA, the fast boiling method was used. Samples were boiled at 100 °C for 10 minutes and then centrifuged to extract the supernatant, which was used as a template for the PCR reaction. Specific primers that amplify a 1316 base pair fragment of the VP2 gene of the CPV-2 virus were used, using a commercial vaccine as a positive control. The viru...

Understanding the effects of COVID-19 on protected areas (PAs) is very important because these spaces are crucial for international policies for biodiversity conservation and sustainable development. Therefore, the aim of this paper was to fully understand the impacts of COVID-19 on terrestrial and marine protected areas (PAs). To address this concern, we conducted a systematic review on the literature of the impacts of the pandemic on PAs. We used the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines which helps authors to follow certain specific criteria when they make a systematic review on a topic. Following it, we examined five databases, together with complementary search perform in Google Scholar. Lastly, we made a qualitative assessment of articles retrieved, studying short-term changes, and identifying positive and negative effects, as well a...
