This research was aimed at determining to what extent factors prior to university admission, motivational factors, and institutional experiences explain the academic persistence of students in the University Leveling Term (CIU) at the Simon Bolivar University - Coastal Campus. An explanatory-type quantitative study was proposed, which involved a non-experimental cross-sectional retrospective causal relationship design. The sample consisted of 101 students (50.5% female) with an average age of 17.90 years (SD = 2.37). The study found a significant relationship between some variables explaining academic persistence, which were: a) having a lower orientation toward academic goals; b) a higher score on the maladaptive pattern; c) a higher score in the perception of the Mathematics professor’s evaluation; and d) a higher score in the final performance. This set of variables explains 56.4% o...

Support Vector Machines are extensively used to solve classification problems in Pattern Recognition. They deal with small errors in the training data using the concept of soft margin, that allowfor imperfect classification. However, if the training data have systematic errors or outliers such strategy is not robust resulting in bad generalization. In this paper we present a model for robust Support Vector Machine classification that can automatically ignore spurius data. We show then that the model can be solved using a high performance Mixed Integer Quadratic Programming solver and present preliminary numerical experiments using real world data that looks promissing.

This article presents the application of the non-parametric Random Forest method through supervised learning, as an extension of classification trees. The Random Forest algorithm arises as the grouping of several classification trees. Basically it randomly selects a number of variables with which each individual tree is constructed and predictions are made with these variables that will later be weighted through the calculation of the most voted class of these trees that were generated, to finally do the prediction by Random Forest. For the application, we worked with 3168 recorded voices, for which the results of an acoustic analysis are presented, registering variables such as frequency, spectrum, modulation, among others, seeking to obtain a pattern of identification and classification according to gender through a voice identifier. The data record used is in open access and can be do...

Maternal mortality is a major public health problem in Peru and other developing countries. This problem does not only mean the deaths of hundreds of thousands of women each year, but that has as one of its effects the mortality rate among children of these women and expresses the deep inequalities between countries and within them, between regions, social classes and géneros1. There is growing consensus on the basic strategies to successfully address this situation. However, it is crucial to identify the unique characteristics of maternal mortality in each country and, within them, in each region. From a program management perspective, the relationship between supply and demand for services is a key to understanding the patterns of maternal mortality and conclude prioritization decisions and planning element.

Cotton crops were one of the most important during the 50 and 80 decades in Northern Sinaloa, Mexico from the economical point of view. However, external factors such as monoculture and sanitary issues caused its disappearance. Due to the need of diversifying the actual pattern of crops grown in the zone, a great possibility of re-growing cotton crop exists. Actually, there is lack of updated information about irrigation and agronomic management practices of the crop. In order to contribute to a new crop planning, an integral programming model was used to estimate planting dates and windows as well as irrigation planning at different operation levels. Field experiments were conducted at different locations of northern Sinaloa during the growing season 2011-2012 in Ahome and Guasave counties. Each plot had a dimension of 2 hectares and five varieties grown with the purpose of calibrating ...

The general objective of this work was to determine the vocalization patterns of Mimus longicaudatus TSCH., 1844 in urban areas. To achieve this goal, recordings were made in the hours from 07:00 to 10:00 and from 16:00 to 19:00. The initial sounds and songs were recorded according to the activity and behavior of the species, the maximum intensity (measured in decibels [dB], as an indication of the volume of the same) of the vocalizations was also recorded. Five points were considered along a 100m transect, each point separated from the other by 20 m. At each point the observer made recordings of 3 to 5 minutes. The vocalizations were recorded and processed with the Audacity Program and Raven Lite 2.0 (free software) for the analysis of the intensity, frequency and variation of the audios, as well as the elaboration of sonograms. The results showed that the frequency of the songs emitted...

Program in the recovery of people affected extreme poverty of tuberculosis in the province of Tacna in 2013. Design explanatory cross-sectional study. Materials and Methods: 467 medical records of patients admitted a treatment for tuberculosis were reviewed, finding 33 people in poorness extreme, obtaining information from their social condition, disease, and whoare interviewed about the pattern of consumption food basket of PANTBC. For the analysis took into account the socio-economic characteristics, disease progression, remission of symptoms, nutritional assessment according to the Body Mass Index (BMI) at the beginning and end of treatment. Results: All patients entered the program with sensitive tuberculosis diagnosis and treatment at the end of his condition was cured. In 90.9%he referred the symptoms, with favorable clinical and bacteriological assessment. Of the total patients ad...

Artificial intelligence is an area that tries to equip the machines with intelligence and among the topics developed are expert systems, fuzzy logic, planning systems, search algorithms, evolutionary computation, artificial neural networks among others. The topics of artificial intelligence used in this article are artificial vision and artificial neural networks; also uses the microbot or mobile robot Mindstorms NXT, which has a limited capacity in the processing, as well as in the storage of information. The limitation of the mobile robot is because it does not have a powerful computer on board to process artificial vision algorithms and artificial neural networks; so an external computer is used to perform its control through bluetooth technology. The processing of artificial vision algorithms and artificial neural networks is done on the external computer and the actions performed by...
