In the month of November 1981. The city of Cusco was invaded by hundreds of peasants from the neighboring district of Maras on a sacrificial march, claiming the benefits of their salt mines for the whole town, demanding the departure of the trading company (EMSAL). ) and requesting the municipalization of their resource. Fleetingly, the name of Maras appeared in the information media of Cusco and the capital of the Republic. The terms of his claim did not attract much attention, although the State was forced to accept them. In the opinion of many, the Government of that time erred in weakness by handing over to a district municipality the commercialization of the salt to be withdrawn from the state company, the "only one empowered by law to commercialize salt, a basic and first-priority industry" (D.L. 17387-PCM-69).

In this issue on the presence of peasants in Andean mining and on the conflicts that affect them, the articles cover a wide range of situations. In some cases, such as the one explained by R. Godoy, the peasant has a great capacity to impose his own demands and conditions in the mining activity that he himself carries out despite not being the owner of the mining resource. At the other extreme, in large mines such as those of the Southern Peru Copper Corporation, the situation of salarization is complete and subordination to the standards of mechanized and large-scale production is very great.

The work systematizes the experience of management socio-environmental conflicts in the upper basin of Jequetepeque particularly in the Province of St. Paul of the Cajamarca Region, by the Group of Formation and Intervention for Sustainable Development (GRUFIDES) in partnership with Enginyeria Sense Fronteres (ESF). The main purpose of this initiative was to design and validate tools for environmental governance at the municipal level to enable the promotion the active participation of the population. The prospect of intervention was a watershed approach. One of the most obvious tensions emerging from the experience, and may be-come a crucial point for new investigations and experiences of intervention in the future, is that the formation of consensus building spaces and inclusive spaces of co-management at the local level, not necessarily are conciled with the processes of mobilization ...

The study deals with the mining project Las Bambas (Apurímac) and the social conflict that broke out at the end of September 2015. The social protest was brief but intense; So much so that the government had to declare a state of emergency and take a series of measures to avoid escalating the conflict because in those days «Lima was the economic capital of the world.» The paper tries to demonstrate that the protests had objective motivations because the changes made by the Chinese company (MMG) were substantial, as they will damage areas of direct and indirect influence. The magnitude of the protest brought to the fore issues such as territorial planning, ecological economic zoning, prior consultation, public hearings, social license, extractivism, environmental pollution, etc. The conflict in the Las Bambas, with some peculiarities, is the portrait of others that have occurred in the...

Global consumption continues to generate growth in mining. In lesserdeveloped economies, this growth offers the potential to generate newresources for development, but also creates challenges to sustainabilityin the regions in which extraction occurs. This context leads todebate on the institutional arrangements most likely to build synergiesbetween mining, livelihoods, and development, and on the socio-politicalconditions under which such institutions can emerge. Buildingfrom a multiyear, three country program of research projects, Peru, aglobal center of mining expansion, serves as an exemplar for analyzingthe effects of extractive industry on livelihoods and the conditionsunder which arrangements favoring local sustainability might emerge. This program is guided by three emergent hypotheses in human environmentalsciences regarding the relationships among institutions, knowledge, learnin...
