The valorization and use of lignocellulosic biomass from food processing to obtain value-added products is crucial to improve sustainability and reduce waste management costs. This potential for cost reduction is a reason for optimism, as it allows agro-industrial waste to be transformed into valuable resources, contributing to the circular economy. This study focused on the compositional and structural characterization of eleven types of lignocellulosic biomass (LCB) to evaluate their potential in producing nanopolysaccharides and polyhydroxyalkanoates. Parameters such as humidity, ash, proteins, extractives, structural carbohydrates, and lignin were analyzed in passion fruit peels, artichoke bracts, asparagus peels, lemon peels, orange peels, avocado seed, potato peels, cassava peels, sugar cane bagasse, rice husk, and rice straw. The results showed that fruit peels and other waste had...

The research results obtained on the effect that occurs on the properties of the synthesis gas obtained as a result of a biomass downdraft gasification process is presents in this paper, working with a cogeneration system internal to the reactor. A study of the previous related works was carried out, from which the dependent and independent variables necessary to evaluate the final quality of the process in the presence and absence of cogeneration were determined. For this, an experimental statistical design of four levels of type 4n was implemented, which allowed the performance of a comparative statistical analysis of the working states of the gasifier. On the other hand, an energy and exergy analysis of both states is presented where the potential of the gasification process to reuse thermal energy can be verified by incorporating a cogeneration system.

This work proposes the formulation of biofilms out of orange peel, using pectin as a crosslinking agent and glycerol as plasticizer. Also, it was determined the impact of the addition of bacterial cellulose obtained from the static fermentation of kombucha (Manchurian fungus) in such biofilms. It is noticeable that the orange peel has been subject previously to an extraction process by steam distillation to recover its essential oil. Experimentally it was determined that an appropriate biofilm formulation has the following mass percentages: orange peel, 15; bacterial cellulose, 5; pectin, 40; and glycerol, 40. Such biofilm showed the following property values: tension stress at break, 5.53 N/mm2 ; elongation at break, 51.60 %; and, water vapor permeability, 0.0273 g.mm/(h.kPa.m2 ). Pectin content affected significantly the properties of the biofilms due to its interaction with glycerol. ...

A research group at the Israel Institute of Technology has outlined the use of Fe2O3 photoanodes to enhance the efficiency of photoelectrochemical cells. The improvement is based on the design of extremely thinsheets of Fe2O3, which allow for a more efficient transport of charge carriers, reducing the amount of them that are lost due to recombination. Fe2O3 was chosen as a photoanode material due to its high stability in water, its high light absorption efficiency, the fact that it is non toxic and its low cost. Photoelectrochemical cells are extremely important in order to electrolyse water, hence producing hydrogen,a green fuel.

Pregnancy in young university students has unquestionable socio-cultural and psychological consequences at a high personal, educational, family, and social cost. The present study analyzes the experiences of women in the last semester of high school and pregnant university students. The methodological approach is based on a qualitative interpretative approach, through informal talks and semi-structured interviews, with 21 students, based on an interview guide. The analysis of the information, through a continuous process of analogy, contrast and delimiting, from a contextual approximation that enabled their organization into three thematic blocks: (i) Sexuality and breaking child dependency; (ii) I’m late! What if my period doesn’t come? What if I am pregnant? What am I going to do? My parents will kill me! and (iii) Pregnancy, cruise of anguish; examining their positioning in the fa...

The aim of this study was to know the perception and knowledge of small producers about the behavior of the climate, its effect on milk production and the practices that allow adaptation to this behavior. The study was developed in Carmen de Carupa and Suesca (Cundinamarca, Colombia) with 40 producers who shared their knowledge through a semi-structured interview. The causes of climate change, events that affect milk production, changes in the climate in recent years and strategies that allow its adaptation were investigated. The humidity temperature index, precipitation, milk production and forage quality were determined. Frequency and principal component analysis were analysed through the Infostat® program. Producers considered deforestation as the main cause of climate change, perceived changes in climate and recognized droughts, frosts and high temperatures as events with the greate...

Azotobacter is a type of bacterium nonpathogenic, Gram-negative with ability to synthesize simultaneously under aerobic conditions two biodegradable polymers extra and intracellular such as alginate and polyhydroxyalkanoates, respectively, whose physical, mechanical, and biodegradable properties have awoken the interest in the industry. Thus, this review compiles information on synthesis chemistry of these polymers and the genetic modification of this bacterium in order to produce a particular polymer and improve its yields. Additionally, we show that alginates obtained present a higher molecular weight, degree of acetylation and M/G ratio compared with other organic sources like seaweed; while polyhydroxyalkanoate polymers have better physical and mechanical characteristics (melting temperature, Young's modulus, elongation and glass transition temperature) compared with other synthetic ...

Dehiscences and fenestrations are commonly observed as a result of a secondary effect in orthodontic treatment. These characteristics are only visualized with high resolution images. where thickness, depth and height are quantified. In addition, said images are taken by cone bean computed tomography, which is an specific tool to diagnose dehiscences and fenestration, due to its reliability and help in diagnosis of support tissue. The objective is to prevent bone defects after an appropiate treatment. The cone bean computed tomography (CBCT) is a useful tool to determine the prevalence of dehiscence and fenestration in post-orthodontic patients. That is why, the cone bean computer tomography must be included as a diagnostic assistance before the beginning of the orthodontic treatment with the purpose of avoiding bone defects which are caused by orthodontic movements like bucco-lingual d...

Hookworm is generally caused by Necator americanus (Stiles, 1902), causing digestive symptoms and anemia. The diagnosis by coprology can have low sensitivity, especially in light parasite loads. The Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) is a sensitive and specific technique, which must be adapted to laboratory conditions and positive controls are necessary. The objective of this work was the standardization of the PCR technique for the amplification of the ITS-1 sequence of N. americanus in stool samples and its cloning for its use as a control. Three DNA extraction protocols were standardized (Phenol/chloroform, Saline Precipitation, and Chelex® 100 Resin). Optimal reagent concentrations (MgCl , BSA, dNTP, primers, and Taq polymerase) were determined, as well as the hybridization 2 temperature and number of cycles. The analytical sensitivity and specificity of the technique was determined. F...
