This study aimed to compare the general electrical heart activity, blood pressure, and heart rate when using three anesthetic protocols for ovariohysterectomy in bitches. In total, 33 healthy canines were selected, distributed in 3 groups of 11 animals each, aged between 1 and 3 years, and with a body weight of 8 to 15 kg from shelters in Bucaramanga, Colombia. Three anesthetic protocols in a completely randomized experimental designwere used. Protocol 1: Ketamine (7 mg/kg) + pentobarbital sodium (1 mg/kg); Protocol 2: Ketamine (7 mg/kg) + propofol (3 mg/kg); Protocol 3: Tiletamine + zolazepam (7 mg/kg). The individual outcomes were classified according to the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA I). The results showed that parameters evaluated in the surgical phase significantly increased in patients with Protocol 1 (p<0.05). Protocol 2 showed a better performance in the post-s...

The global biodiversity decrease implies the necessity to study the state of the ecosystem, not only in preserved places but also in landscapes with diversified land use and territories currently under use. Considering the national efforts to gather biological data in Peru as in México and several diverse international referents, from the generation, implementation, and analysis of monitoring biodiversity protocols in forest management areas in both countries, a unified biodiversity monitoring protocol for forest use areas was elaborated through a logical and inclusive process. This protocol is capable of generating data in three different territorial approximation levels, and it can be used in several ecological conditions. The different stages of development of all the activities were implemented for a team divided into two sections with complementary functions: a) Situational analysi...

One of the most used ecotoxicity bioassays is based on the luminescence of Vibrio fischeri, for which commercial kits such as Microtox® and several others are available. However, this assay might not always be suitable for several reasons: Its protocol cannot be easily adapted for particular purposes, and it requires the continuous purchases of the kit and the availability of specialized equipment or at least, a luminometer. As a versatile alternative, this paper describes an optimized and kit-free protocol, referred to as “Macrotox”, which allows a wide range of treatment periods (for example, 1, 3, 7, 12, 24, 30 and 36 h) to follow the effects on the luminescence and proliferation of V. fischeri. While the optimized protocol involves 1-mL treatments, it could be easily adapted to use other volumes and times. Importantly, to evaluate the effects on luminescence, only a digital came...
