Often the bodily injuries caused in the practice of soccer involve weeks of recovery, when it comes to serious injuries, they can require long medical treatments and surgical interventions that even mean the withdrawal of the athlete from the professional practice. These injuries are not normally reported to the competent authority, perhaps because it is often mistakenly understood that all of them have no criminal relevance. The truth is that, in the doctrine, the authors have dealt with injuries in the practice of sports, with different positions regarding the cases that deserve criminal sanction and those that are exempt from it. Thus, some affirm that said behaviors are atypical because they are caused under the consent of the athlete and the risk allowed; that they are exempt from punishment because sport is an activity that is carried out in the legitimate exercise of a trade or the...

We analyzed a young man with a history of jaundice since childhood and cholelithiasis, who presented with abdominal pain, jaundice and splenomegaly. Initially, a diagnosis of dengue was considered, given the prevalence of this disease in the patient's geographic region. However, additional testing identified hereditary spherocytosis, a genetic hemolytic disorder. The importance of considering alternative diagnoses in the face of common symptoms in emergencies is emphasized. Initial dengue-oriented management was followed by targeted treatment for hereditary spherocytosis after the diagnosis was confirmed, resulting in significant improvement in the patient. This case emphasizes the need for thorough anamnesis and meticulous diagnostic evaluation to prevent diagnostic errors and inappropriate treatment, highlighting how inherited diseases can mimic infectious conditions in complex clinica...

In this work I have tried to make a recapitulation of biliary secretion physiology. More detailled descriptions, as much as references, may be found in Rich (3), Mann (25). Barrón (5) and the author' s (29) articles. Only through a deep knowledge of the matter, is possible to go on in the knowledge of the different cases of jaundice. In front of an established jaundice case, it is possible to place the origin of the sickness in a high percentage of cases with the help of the history, the physical examination and the different tests. When the diagnosis is already made the therapy may be instituted specific, of maintenance or surgical. There will be many cases in which the diagnosis will stay without resolution. In these cases, most import decision is the selection of a medical or surgical treatment. It is impossible to give exact rules for selecting the proceeding, not with standing seve...

Salmonella infection is uncommon, but carries a high mortality rate if the patient developshemodynamic instability. It predominantly affects children and the elderly. The mechanismsby which nontyphoidal Salmonella causes urinary tract infection are generally attributed tohematogenous spread resulting from gastroenteritis or to the introduction of fecal microbiotathrough the urethra. In this case, the patient presented with a clinical picture characterized bythe onset of watery stools accompanied by emesis and followed by urinary symptoms. The presented clinical features prompted the development of this case report, which aims toprovide guidance in identifying risk factors and clinical manifestations that may raise suspicion ofSalmonella as the etiology. The patient had a history of acute gastroenteritis, after which urinarysymptoms and septic shock developed. The bacillus was isolated in ...

The authors study maternal morbidity and mortality in 1088 cases of septic abortion attended at the Maria Auxiliadora Hospital’s Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, from January 1.º, 1990 through December 31, 1993. Findings were compared with those before 1990. Abortion rate in our Hospital is 299 per 1000 live newborns and septic abortion rate 18%. Endometritis complicated all the cases and other severe complications were found in 14,4% of cases. Septic abortion today is more frequent in adolescents than before 1990 and tends to ocurr earlier in pregnancy. Ten percent of patients were submitted to abdominal hysterectomy with or without adnexectomy. maternal mortality by septic abortion was 603 per 100000 live newborns. In conclusion, septic abortion is an important cause of maternal morbidity and mortality in our hospital and its frequency tends to increase.

The treatment of anterior open bite represents a challenge for orthodontist due the difficulty and instability of correction. This article presents the case of a 16-year-old male patient who attended the Dental Center of the San Martín de Porres University School of Dentistry - Specialty of Orthodontics, who presented class 1 malocclusion with anterior open bite . The patient received corrective treatment for the atypical swallowing habit, for which a palatal grid was used. Extractions of the upper and lower first premolars were also performed. At the end of the treatment, facial and dental changes were observed. The closure of the open bite was achieved, adequate alignment of the teeth, excessive protrusion of the upper and lower incisors and a correct occlusion were reduced. In the facial aspect, a notable improvement in the facial profile was observed, as well as a decrease in la...

A clinical case of tuberculous meningoencephalitis in a 5-month-old Holstein calf that presented nervous symptoms is described. The calf was part of a herd with a 30% prevalence of tuberculosis. The animal was euthanized, and a necropsy was performed. No lesions were found in organs of the thoracic or abdominal cavity. Brain samples were taken for histopathology (hematoxylin-eosin and Zielh Nelsen staining), bacteriology and PCR-MRD1 studies. In the brain, macroscopic inflammatory lesions with congestion and granular appearance were observed in the meninges, as well as fibrous adhesions in the ventral area. Microscopically, inflammatory infiltrate, lymphocytes, macrophages, epithelioid cells, plasma cells and multinucleated giant cells, areas of central necrosis, dystrophic mineralization and acid-fast bacilli were observed. Granulomatous meningoencephalitis due to Mycobacterium bovis wa...

In the 2019 coronavirus disease pandemic (COVID-19) caused by the SARS-CoV2 virus, the majority of patients present general and respiratory symptoms, some atypical gastrointestinal, cardiovascular, dermatological or neurological symptoms. In the case report of a 40-year-old male patient, without any important epidemiological history, diagnosed with COVID-19 by rapid immunological test, who presents with a sudden ischemic stroke. In the CT scan of the brain without contrast, a large ischemic area is evident in the left cerebral hemisphere in the middle cerebral artery territory, accompanied by edema. In patients with COVID-19, infected with the SARSCoV2 coronavirus, the possibility of the patient having a cerebrovascular accident (CVA) should be taken into account, to allow adequate and timely management.

The first successful case of surgical treatment of a superior mesenteric artery aneurysm is described at the Honorio Delgado Regional Hospital III in Arequipa. The case report involved a patient who had experienced 18 months of epigastric pain and was diagnosed with computed tomography and computed tomography. The patient underwent laparotomy for aneurysm resection and a bypass of the superior mesenteric artery was performed using a polytetrafluoroethylene graft. The patient had a rapid and uncomplicated recovery and has since progressed well. This type of aneurysm is rare, with no epidemiological data in Peru. Surgical treatment requires careful planning due to the high risk of rupture and mortality. Technological support is essential in the surgical approach of these patients, which is often a challenge in non-specialized public hospitals.

Cat scratch's disease caused by Bartonella henselae, is known to be a self-limited benign process in immunocompetent children. The association with neurologic manifestations is very uncommon especially in patient with no immunologic defects and in cases without specific treatment. A 7 years old male patient, without any immunocompromised defect, presented an atypic presentation of the cat scratch disease. The patient came to the hospital in two opportunities in a status epilepticus, in both cases the diagnosis was encephalitis by Bartonella henselae and the evolution with treatment was monitored with PCR (polymerase chain reaction) in cerebrospinal fluid and blood, as well as IFI (IgM, IgG) serology (indirect immunofluorescence). The patient had a favorable clinical and laboratory evolution for 6 months showing no recurrence of the disease.
