The present study shows the case of a 7-year-old male canine who was admitted to the veterinary clinic "Vet Center", Bucaramanga, Colombia, for an alleged poisoning picture. The patient showed signs of depression, dysuria, strangury, haematuria and vomiting. Haematological assessment and urinalysis revealed a picture of dehydration and urinary infection. Blood chemistry showed insufficiency and postrenal azotemia, and the ultrasound examination showed the presence of a urolith and urinary bladder repletion, confirming the diagnosis of obstructive uropathy. For the stabilization of the patient, a Nelaton urinary catheter was placed to empty the bladder and hydro propulsion was done. Besides, maintenance intravenous solutions with 0.9% NaCl, antibiotics and anti-inflammatory were prescribed. Finally, cystotomy was performed to remove the urolith, in addition to a urethrostomy due to the re...

This paper reports a clinical case of Aspergillus otomycosis in an 8-year-old male English Cocker Spaniel, with a previous diagnosis of immune-mediated hemolytic anemia. The patient was treated for pain and discomfort in both ears. Routine blood tests were performed, as well as cytology and microbiological culture of ear secretion. Aspergillus niger together with Malassezia pachydermatis were the isolated, the oral and topical antifungal therapy was established with favorable results after 30 days of treatment. The isolated mold exhibited some important virulence factors such as hemolytic, lipase and amylase activity, as well as in vitro susceptibility to azole antifungals. In the immunosuppressed patients with otitis externa, it is necessary to perform microbiological cultures for environmental fungi, in addition to evaluating the pathogenic characteristic at the phenotypic level. This ...

Two cases of canines infected with Hepatozoon canis are described in the city of Cúcuta, Colombia. The first patient of 18 months of age came to consultation with vomiting, anorexia, and progressive weight loss. In the second case, it was intended to perform preventive ovariohysterectomy, but the patient presented anemia in the pre-surgical clinical tests. For both cases, the diagnosis was by blood smear, observed at 100X. For the second case the diagnose was confirmed by PCR. The treatment established was symptomatic, using drugs such as oxytetracycline and doxycycline. This is the first report of hepatozoonosis in the city of Cúcuta.

A case of an 8-month-old Shih Tzu canine was referred to ASMEVET veterinary hospital in the city of Tunja, Colombia with a presumptive diagnosis of portosystemic shunt. The owner reported that the patient wanders at night, is not resting, has been vomiting, had convulsions and leaned his head against the walls. Clinical examination revealed dehydration, tachycardia, tachypnea, sialorrhea, disorientation and abdominal pain. Doppler ultrasonography was performed where the communication between the portal vein and the caudal vena cava was found. An exploratory laparotomy was performed to visualize the anomalous communication between the portal vein and the caudal vena cava, and a cellophane strip was installed around the anomalous vessel. After 60 days of surgery, blood samples were taken to measure pre and postprandial ammonium and bile acids, yielding values within normal blood ranges.

Testicular neoplasms are a differential diagnosis to consider in the clinical evaluation of dogs that consult for diseases of the genital tract. Its presentation is more frequent in old and cryptorchid dogs. They are considered pathologies of easy diagnosis, although their precise confirmation of the histopathological study. Bilateral orchiectomy is the therapeutic of choice, being curative in most cases. The case of a five-year-old crossbred canine, intact male, not cryptorchid is presented. The owner reports an increase in size in the inguinal region of continuous growth with a month of evolution in the left inguinal region. Ultrasound and histopathology are performed as diagnostic aids and the presence of a Sertoli cell tumour was found.

The canine bacterial dermatitis, commonly known as pyoderma is one of the main skin diseases in the veterinary practice. The present retrospective study had the objective to determine the frequency of the bacteriological agents involved with the disease and the antibiotics that show better antimicrobiobial susceptibility. Laboratory records of bacterial isolation and antibiogram of the Laboratory of Bacteriology of the Veterinary Medicine Faculty, San Marcos University, Lima, were analyzed. Staphlococcus intermedius was the most commonly isolated species (70.6%). The most effective antibiotics were from the Cephalosporin family, especially the ceftiofur and cefalexin, and penicillin was the antibiotic with higher resistance index.

The aim of this study was to evaluate whether there is any relationship between cytological subtypes, histopathological phases, and the response to vincristine sulfate treatment in canines naturally affected by canine transmissible venereal tumour (CTVT). In total, 52 cases of CTVT were evaluated in different breeds, ages and sex without finding a significant relationship between the cytological classifications and histopathology determined prior to chemotherapy and the duration of the chemotherapy. The results of did not show differences in factors such as partial response to treatment, degree of malignancy, metastasis or resistance to vincristine in treated dogs, and the prognosis for tumour involution could not be defined from the cytology or histopathological classification.

The aim of this work was to highlight the importance of diagnosing the cause of Cushing's syndrome in a 12-year-old male canine patient with adrenal cortical carcinoma, who came to the clinic for presenting clinical signs compatible with Cushing's syndrome. The results of stimulation with synthetic ACTH (Synacthen 0.25 mg®) showed an increase in basal cortisol (10.8 µg/dl) and post-stimulation (28.4 µg/dl). Abdominal ultrasound revealed a rounded and enlarged left adrenal gland (3.3 x 3.4 cm), compatible with adrenal neoplasia. The treatment of choice was adrenalectomy of the left adrenal gland due to a midline abdominal approach and subsequent referral to histopathology for evaluation, which confirmed adrenal cortical carcinoma. Adrenalectomy in these cases increases survival, thus improving the quality of life of the patient.

Heartworm disease is a parasitic infection with worldwide distribution, caused by the Dirofilaria immitis nematode and transmitted by culicid mosquitoes, with canines being the main hosts. Serologic tests provide some diagnostic help but are not conclusive. This report describes a clinical case of a canine in which the serological tests for filarial detection and the tests for the detection of microfilaraemia were inconclusive. However, the use of standardized protocols using ultrasound as part of the physical examination, evidenced the presence of cardiac filarials. The importance of reporting this case is to present a clinical protocol that includes cardiac ultrasound for an accurate diagnostic approach.

The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of an autovaccine for papilloma caused by canine papillomavirus (CPV) in the facial region in a three-month-old Great Dane dog. A group of papillomas were collected from the patient’s face and analyzed using molecular techniques (amplification of a segment of the gene that codes for the L1 protein by PCR and sequencing). For sequence analysis, the BLAST algorithm was used. The histological study was performed by hematoxylin-eosin staining of the tissue and analysis under a 20X light microscope. An autovaccine was developed from the excised papillomas, which was administered intradermally on four occasions at seven-day intervals. The presence of genotype 1 CPV was established in the papilloma analyzed. Histopathology established the formation of exophytic epidermal papillae supported by a fibrovascular chorion with hyperkeratosis ...

The odontoma is a mixed benign tumor of odontogenic origin although its behavior corresponds to a hamartoma, which is composed of differentiated mesenchymal and epithelial cells, making it a normal appearance but with a defective structure. This type of lesions are discovered with the routine radiographic examination, the most common reason for consultation is the lack of eruption of a permanent tooth, with or without the persistence of the temporal tooth. In this article we present a surgical-orthodontic case of an impacted upper canine in a pediatric patient, accompanied by the extraction of an odontoma, with a complete clinical and radiographic diagnosis (tomography). We present the case of a pediatric patient of 12 years of age with dental retention of the right upper canine, caused by the presence of a compound odontoma. Various radiographic studies are carried out for its diagnosis...

Cone Beam Computed Tomography offers highly precise 3D images ideal for diagnosis and case planning, although this imaging method involves the use of high doses of radiation. When considering the optimization principle, radiation dose reduction methods aim to modify the technical parameters of the equipment to obtain an ideal combination between dose and image quality. This is important in the pediatric patient because the highest levels of risk are associated with X-ray exposure in this age group. We present the case of an 11-year-old female patient is presented, in which a low-resolution protocol is used to locate the maxillary retained canines. The advantages and practical application of this imaging study method are analyzed by performing variations in exposure parameters. Supported by tomographic images, the surgical procedure is carried out to subsequently a guided eruption, achiev...
