Little by little, corporate social responsibility has been consolidated in the Latin American region. As a consequence, it has become an effective mechanism to reduce costs and strengthen market share in the medium term for some companies. Although there are more initiatives, experiences and foundations of social responsibility, even its application in accordance with the institutional policy is weak. Faced with this, the authors emphasize the proper application of CSR analysis methodological instruments with the aim of consolidating parameters that consolidate experiences at an international level. In this way, the objective of this article is focused on making a methodological and casuistic contribution on the assessment of CSR practices by analyzing the cases of commercial banks in Peru and Brazil in the field of labor rights, environmental issues and relationships with consumers. On ...

This article analyzes Brazil’s economic policy towards China in light of the major influx of Chinese imports and investment into Brazil in the 2000s. In particular, I explore the significance of domestic actors in the Brazilian political debate surrounding the entrada chinesa, and their success in pressuring the government to adopt protectionist policies. These dynamics are exemplified through a detailed case study on Chinese investment in the Brazilian soy industry. In sum, my findings underscore the ways in which Brazil is falling short of capturing the benefits presented by Chinese trade and investment.

This case aims to convey an overview of the activities involved in the evaluation of a specific investment project. The focus is on the importance of sufficient theoretical foundation to solve other problems, which makes it possible to understand that the performanc...

This paper focuses on two cases corresponding to parties and candidates situated more to the right than usual and, therefore, described as far right. These cases are Jair Bolsonaro, former candidate of the Social Liberal Party and current president of Brazil after winning in the second round of the general elections of October 7, 2018 with 55.1% of the votes; and Vox, the party which achieved parliamentary representation in Spain for the first time after the general elections of April 28, 2019 and is currently the third parliamentary force with 15, 09 % of the votes and 52 seats. For both, we propose to study the use of anti-feminist political discourse as an electoral tool. In spite of the differences in the electoral systems and in the institutional designs of both countries - one presidential and the other parliamentary - both cases share the fact that the candidates have managed to co...

We analyzed the impacts of the regime change in post-2016 Brazil on patterns of activism, based on the case of the oldest confederation of rural workers in the country. Since the end of the 1990s, the National Confederation of Male and Female Family Farmers (Contag) has concentrated its efforts on demanding public policies for family farming, with the participation of farmers in policy formulation. Using two analytical tools (the differentiation between public and semi-public actions and the modes of gathering), we discussed three moments: the impeachment of Rousseff in 2016, the pension reform between 2016 and 2019, and the COVID-19 Pandemic in 2020. We saw the removal of the Federal government as an interlocutor, efforts to avoid the dismantling of policies, and the return of democracy as a disputed issue.

Recently, Brazil has undergone decentralization processes that could have strengthened the local level in democratic terms. Notwithstanding, the results of these processes were not con-sensual, and corruption persisted as a feature of the Brazilian local level. This paper focuses on the corrupt conduct of municipal public officials who deal with fe- deral funds transferred by the central government. The information collected is part of a profile of corruption in the cities monitored by the federal Executive, revealing both how this phenomenon is distributed in terms of areas and which possible factors can explain the occurrence of corrup- tion in the Brazilian local governments. This paper deals with corruption in the municipalities of Minas Gerais - one of the 26 Brazilian states - from a conception of corruption as the misuse offunds by the political system. The argument focuses on ...

The government usually seeks help from private investors to be able to deliver public services. Private capital usually tends to concentrate on big profi table projects. In order to be able to carry out the smaller projects, an alternative to privatizations has to be proposed, in attention to the State’s inefficiency to deliver every service the society demands. In this article, the author proposes the civil society’s active participation as a way to carry out smaller projects efficiently. Nonetheless, civil participation is not possible without an attractive foment policy and the facilitation of particular initiatives given by the State. The article focuses particularly in the case of the Brazilian reality and other parts of LatinAmerica.

This article analyzes the role of political scandals at different times of the government’sactivity, with the intention to verify if news of corruption differs in electoral and non-electoral periods. We try to verify in what contexts Argentinean and Brazilian governments are more permeable to political scandals and respond more actively. We consider the electoral schedule and the type of Presidentialism in Argentina and Brazil. We argue that after an accusation of corruption in media, public officials assess risks in order to consider if their reputation were erode by not facing scandals of corruption. During electoral periods politicians fear of punishment from voters through mechanisms of electoral accountability. Finally we say that the majority Presidentialism is less permeable to allegations that coalition one. To corroborate these hypotheses we investigate responses of gov...

Economic relations between China and Latin America differ according to two subregions. Regarding Mexico and Central America there is a meaningful competition, while South America is benefiting from the high demand of commodities from China. While the relation has a lot to do with the market, the state also plays an important role. In China, resilient central planning and state intervention breeds significant effects on the relationship with Latin America. The Brazilian government has also sought to impinge upon the political and economic relations with China, while Mexico, more attached to laissez faire, has fewer will and instruments for this endeavor. Chile is an intermediate case in which the state still plays a promotional role through the ownership of mining companies and mechanisms of trade promotion.
