Online translator training has grown considerably in recent years. The virtual classroom modality presents new challenges for instructors, including the need to address the students’ important socio-affective aspects. The socio-affective element in a virtual learning environment directly influences the learning process. This article is based on a socio-constructivist and socio-affective theoretical foundation, a collaborative and contextual pedagogical framework, and a prior survey of recent graduates from an online translation program. We present a didactic proposal focused on the explicit use of socio-affective learning strategies in a virtual translation training program to compensate for the lack of physical presence. The purpose is to improve both the learning process and the translation product. The strategies and tactics proposed are aimed at increasing learner satisfaction, aca...

This paper presents the results of a research work carried out on cyber-plagiarism in university online language teaching and translation training. Following a theoretical review of cyber-plagiarism and an analysis of the reasons behind this phenomenon in education, an ad hoc survey was conducted on students in the first courses of the Translation and Interpretation degree at the International University of Valencia (VIU). The purpose of this instrument was to analyze how students use other people’s intellectual property to develop their own academic activities. From the results obtained, students (n=73) still do not have a clear idea of how and when to reference their sources. Moreover, they need some training to ensure they reference correctly. Occasionally, they do not cyber-plagiarize deliberately, but involuntarily, as they are unaware that they are doing it. They do not know the ...

This paper aims at filling the gap regarding the need to incorporate self-efficacy in translator training programmes in a structured way (Atkinson & Crezee, 2014). It describes a learning experience implemented in the translation classroom aimed at developing students’ translation self-efficacy, i.e., their confidence in their abilities to translate (Bandura 1987, 1997; Haro-Soler, 2017a, 2017b). This experience included practices such as goal-setting as a motivational incentive, verbal persuasion, vicarious learning, and activities to promote students’ self-awareness. The results of an empirical-descriptive study performed to qualitatively and quantitatively assess this training experience from the participants’ perspective will also be presented. The results were obtained from an online questionnaire that all 15 participants were asked to complete and showed that, in their op...

The purpose of this study was to translate the Bedtime Procrastination Scale (BPS) into Spanish and to evaluate its psychometric properties. A sample of 419 students from three Peruvian universities participated in the study. Confirmatory factor analysis was conducted to evaluate the original model of the scale, which initially showed poor fit indices. Improved fit indices were obtained after removing reverse-scored item, χ²(5) = 9.240, CFI = .998, RMSEA = .045, TLI = .997, and SRMR = .013. The internal consistency of the scale, examined using the omega coefficient, was found to be satisfactory (ω = .86). Moreover, measurement invariance analysis supported gender invariance, indicating that the scale functions equivalently across male and female participants. Additionally, convergent validity was assessed by examining the correlations between the BPS and insomnia, as measured by the A...

In the age of the Internet, anonymous online users can form a societal reaction by posting large quantities of critique and insulting comments against (perceived) norm violations on social media. These so-called online firestorms, or Enjō in Japanese, tend to include aggressive behavior against the target. This research aims to reveal the dynamics of Enjō and explores how people communicate with each other in the formation process of Enjō by conducting a comparative case study. This study collects tweets posted in five Enjō cases and compares each case to create conceptual categories of the communication process of Enjō. Results show that the participants of Enjō interact with each other to define the problem of concern through exchange of information. Moreover, it is revealed that there are two types of process in the escalation of Enjō, “social problematization” and “villa...

ABSTRACT The emergence and re-emergence of infectious diseases such as Ebola, chikungunya, and Zika increase the necessity of knowledgeable and skilled health professionals. Massive open online courses (MOOCs) arise as opportunities that allow people around the world to participate in higher education courses. A search was conducted on specialized MOOC platforms to find courses related to outbreaks, using terms included in the list of the WHO disease outbreaks from January 1st to December 31st, 2016. We found seven courses about Ebola, two about Zika, three about the dynamics of epidemics and pandemics, and only one course about dengue, chikungunya, and malaria. Most of the courses were conducted in English. The courses on Ebola, Zika and chikungunya were released after their last outbreak. MOOCs could be used to learn about health issues of global relevance, and with the necessity of fa...

The European university reform process requires a new approach into the relationship between faculty and students. This paper analyzes how the Spanish university context has demanded adaptations for the faculty’s role in the presence of new technologies, identifying the relevance of virtual tutoring as an opportunity to understand another meaning of the teaching and learning process. From a qualitative standpoint, the topic of study is addressed in order to characterize the Spanish university context and virtual tutoring. The faculty’s training need is identified beyond promoting academic research, in addition to proposing a new classification of virtual tutoring based on five levels. Finally, Bologna centers its attention on the student; however, the practices established before the reform are still ongoing. Virtual tutoring, together with the motivational factor, constitutes one of...

Academic satisfaction in university students has been studied linking with contextual factors of the educational environment, among others, the teaching of the teacher, support in adaptation, as well as personal factors of the student. The purpose of this study was to estimate the prediction of the influence of student study strategies and teacher performance on the academic satisfaction of psychology students from two public universities in Lima, Peru. 161 university students of the degree in psychology participated, from two public universities in Lima, 46 men and 115 women, who answered three self-report scales, one on learning strategies, another on the performance of their teachers, and the third on academic satisfaction. The three scales obtained high internal consistency indices. The method used includes a non-experimental, explanatory design, to determine the incidence of the var...

Nomophobia understood as fear of not being able to contact or make use of a smartphone, irrational fear of losing it, running out of batteries or being without an internet signal, which generates high rates of anxiety.  The consumer behaviors of this virtual society lead to the postponement of personal, academic and work objectives because more time is spent performing online activities, which turn out to be more attractive and less complex.   The main objective of this research has been to determine the factorial structure, validity and reliability of the Nomophobia Scale (NMPQ).  300 students participated in a State University of Metropolitan Lima. The confirmatory factor analysis corroborated a structure of four factors, showing adequate adjustment indicators composed of CFI= .997, TLI= 0.997 and RMSEA= 0.084. confirming a second-order model, plus a first-order model. Cronbach's a...
