Purpose. This paper aims to test the hypothesis that the effect of production slowdown on labour demand can be muted by labour hoarding. Design/methodology/approach. This study adopts a production function approach, using data from Malta, a small state in the EU. Findings. The results confirm the hypothesis and indicate that firms are normally prepared to employ and dismiss more workers in the long run than in the short run. Practical implications. This finding has important implications for developed countries, including that labour hoarding can be of certain relevance in times of economic slowdown as shocks are absorbed by internal flexibility. The burnout syndrome is an occupational health indicator that intervenes in the teaching-learning process and may harm the quality of education offered by institutions. The relationship between individual characteristics and the work environment may have different effects over the teaching performance. The current investigation seeks to analyze the fit of a model to predict teaching performance based on the teacher burnout, while including individual characteristics and the work environment perception in university teachers. The sample is composed of 94 teachers who provided information related to the Conscientiousness trait, their burnout and engagement levels, their teaching performance, and their perception of the work environment. El presente trabajo analiza la evolución de los requerimientos de capital a los bancos en la legislación bancaria nacional, su relación con la salvaguarda de los recursos del público confiados a la banca y los efectos de los nuevos estándares propuestos en los Acuerdos de Basilea con relación a esta materia. Primero describimos como se ha concebido la función del capital social de los bancos. La base de esta descripción es la Ley de Bancos 7159, de 1931, que además de asignar al capital las funciones tradicionales del derecho societario, le atribuía una función de garantía para los depositantes y terceros acreedores. El nuevo rol asignado al capital era reforzado porque este era empleado como un parámetro para determinar la cantidad de dinero u obligaciones que los bancos podían tomar de los depositantes y otros acreedores. The authorities in charge of managing our Andean basins work in unimaginable water-powered landscapes from the Peruvian legislator point of view. They should generate and apply peculiar mechanisms. Why? Because the national legislator is traditionally positioned on the coast, a region very different to the Andean highlands and punas. The use of ethnographic evidence coming from a drainage basin in the Central Andes (Mantaro River, Junin) lets me depict in detail how public officers appeal to mechanisms of location, adaptation and regulation in order to adjust the official regulations, to cover the needs of the farming organizations of watering, and to affirm their positions as representatives of the Peruvian government.
