Camu camu is a typical Amazon native fruit shrub that possesses a diploid genome, moderate genetic diversity, and population structure. The fruits accumulate several essential nutrients and synthesize L-ascorbic acid (vitamin C) in great quantities and an array of diverse secondary metabolites with corroborated in vitro and in vivo health-promoting activities. These beneficial effects include antioxidative and antiinflammatory activities, antiobesity, hypolipidemic, antihypertensive and antidiabetic effects, DNA damage and cancer protection effects, and other bioactivities. Many health-promoting phytochemicals are biosynthesized in several metabolic pathways of camu camu. Their reconstruction from the fruit transcriptome database was accomplished by our research group. These include basic metabolic pathways such as glycolysis and pentose phosphate pathway, vitamin C biosynthesis pathways...

Hyman Minsky’s financial instability hypothesis provides a theoretical framework to understand the emergence of endogenous crises in modern economies and how capital flows amplify accumulated imbalances and exacerbate financial constraints in economic units. This inquiry operationalizes the Financial Instability Hypothesis within the Colombian non-listed manufacturing sector through the estimation of discrete-state dynamics and distributional sensitivities. The methodological design constructs two distinct fragility taxonomies to interrogate the determinants of the Hedge, Speculative, and Ponzi classifications. The first specification applies an open-economy cash-flow model derived from Castro (2011), which explicitly internalizes the valuation effects of nominal exchange rate fluctuations on debt service obligations. The second taxonomy, grounded in Nishi (2019), evaluates solvency th...

Potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) is one of the world's most important crops, but it is facing major challenges due to climatic changes. To investigate the effects of intermittent drought on the natural variability of plant morphology and tuber metabolism in a novel potato association panel comprising 258 varieties we performed an augmented block design field study under normal irrigation and under water-deficit and recovery conditions in Ica, Peru. All potato genotypes were profiled for 45 morphological traits and 42 central metabolites via nuclear magnetic resonance. Statistical tests and norm of reaction analysis revealed that the observed variations were trait specific, that is, genotypic versus environmental. Principal component analysis showed a separation of samples as a result of conditional changes. To explore the relational ties between morphological traits and metabolites, correla...

The aim of the following review is to describe the seasonal reproductive behavior in male and female ungulates, and identify the determinants of reproductive synchrony. Intrinsic and extrinsic factors that influence the reproductive seasonality of ungulates analyzed. Intrinsic factors are related to the same individual such as genotypic and phenotypic characteristics, and implies that the reproductive aspects can not be extrapolated between species and breeds, and are modified by the action of external factors such as photoperiod, availability of food, temperature, latitude, among others. Among these factors are identified primarily photoperiod and food availability. The photoperiod and food availability are the main signals that determine melatonin levels, and this modulates the reproductive function. Photoperiod is related to the intensity of light and darkness that animals are exposed...

Cotton is a resilient and multipurpose crop, meeting major of the world’s textile needs while also yielding byproducts like edible oil and animal feed. Starch plays a crucial role in cotton fabric production. It enhances fabric strength by forming a protective film around cotton fibers, making them more resistant to wear and tear. BES1 (brassinosteroid insensitive 1) is a key regulator in brassinosteroid signaling. It controls thousands of target genes involved in development processes. Interestingly, two β-amylase proteins (BAM7 and BAM8) are part of the BES1 family, despite their primary function as β-amylases. β-Amylase (BAM) and BES1 are two gene families with functional and regulatory roles in controlling shoot growth and development by mediating brassinosteroid effects. They share similar domains and participate in various biological processes, tolerance and responses to ...

Alpacas and llamas play an important role in the livelihood of many rural families in the High Andes of Peru. The census of 2012 indicates a population of 3 million alpacas and 746,269 llamas. Both species are kept in extensive, low-input, pasture-based systems in altitudes between 3800 m and up to 5000 meters above sea level. Smallholders keep mixed herds of sheep, alpaca and llamas as a mitigation strategy against fluctuating market prices. Since 1997 the Peruvian Ministry of Agriculture manages a genealogy registry for alpacas and llamas, but so far the up-take rate by farmers and inscription rate of animals is low. The national research organisation INIA (Instituto Nacional de Innovación Agaria) runs an ex-situ in-vivo conservation program for coloured alpacas (21 different colours) and llamas. INIA is also doing research in the area of embryo transfer, artificial insemination and c...
