The amniotic band syndrome (ABS) is characterized by accumulation of fibrous tissue bands or strings that adhere to the fetus and may produce compression in different sites. Most cases present multiple congenital anomalies incompatible with life. A small group of fetuses have isolated constrictions of the limb that may cause severe limb dysfunction or limb amputation if not treated during pregnancy. This rare condition occurs in approximately 1:1 200 to 1:15 000 live births. The exact cause of ABS remains uncertain; however, theories of intrinsic, extrinsic and iatrogenic reasons have been proposed. The evolution of the limb affected by ABS is characterized by progression of distal edema due to venous obstruction, and intrauterine amputation of the limb from vascular insufficiency. Fetoscopic release of the amniotic bands through minimally invasive surgery techniques may allow life prese...

It is now known that turbulence and mixing in the lower stratosphere occurs in intermittent layers of thickness between about 30 and 300 meters. Layered structures also exist in the ocean (Woods, 1969) and in the atmospheres of the other planets (Gierasch and Conrath, 1987). It appears that dissipative processes in stratified geophysical fluids frequently take place in thin layers. It is therefore of great importance to observe and document the nature of these dynamical regions. The Arecibo facility is uniquely capable of performing these high resolution measurements. The S-band radar system has been configured for high resolution studies of the lower stratosphere, and data have been collected and analyzed, demonstrating its potential and capabilities. Previous e:ffort was directed to a description of a wide region of the atmosphere, with only brief attention dedicated to continuous ob...

Amniotic band syndrome is a congenital fetal abnormality characterized by fibrous bands and multiple disruptive anomalies that vary in presentation and complexity, some of which are incompatible with life. We present 18 cases of this syndrome and the associated pathology. Five newborns and 13 fetuses were examined following the standard pathological examination protocol. Nine were males and nine, females, with body weight varying from less than 100 g to 3 680 g. Cases of amniotic bands affected fingers (13 cases), limbs (5 cases), lips (6 cases), face (6 cases), head (6 cases), abdominal wall (2 cases) and umbilical cord (8 cases). Eight cases included associated malformations in heart, lungs, kidneys, gastrointestinal tract, and umbilical cord (single artery, velamentous insertion, short umbilical cord, nuchal cord). Maternal age was 17 to 41 years; 26 years in average. There were 11 pr...

The·objective of OUT work is to propase end analyze a decoding procedure useful to achieve unprecedented spatial and temporal resolution in CW S-band radar measurements at the AO. We find that using hard limiting transformations of the detected echoes (to achieve computational speed) does not distort significantly the process of spectral estimation. Moreover our procedure is efficient in the sense that statistical accuracy of individual estimates is kept with small increase in (coherent) integration time specially if the time series is oversampled. These characteristics make our estimation method very convenient.

CCD imaging was performed of the NGC 1640 field using the OAUNI 51cm telescope at Huancayo Observatory, Peru, on 2023-08-19.310 (UT). No source is detected at the position of AT 2023pow (TNSTR-2023-1982) with limiting magnitude R ~ 18.5. This is consistent with the AT 2023pow report by T. Noguchi few hours after the detection alert. The OAUNI project is supported by UNI, TWAS, IGP and ProCiencia-Concytec (Convenio133-2020 Fondecyt).

Seismo-volcano source localization is essential to improve our understanding of eruptive dynamics and of magmatic systems. The lack of clear seismic wave phases prohibits the use of classical location methods. Seismic antennas composed of one-component (1C) seismometers provide a good estimate of the backazimuth of the wavefield. The depth estimation, on the other hand, is difficult or impossible to determine. As in classical seismology, the use of three-component (3C) seismometers is now common in volcano studies. To determine the source location parameters (backazimuth and depth), we extend the 1C seismic antenna approach to 3Cs. This paper discusses a high-resolution location method using a 3C array survey (3C-MUSIC algorithm) with data from two seismic antennas installed on an andesitic volcano in Peru (Ubinas volcano). One of the main scientific questions related to the eruptive pro...

The topological materials permit transport of polarized charges through edge and surface states in 2D y 3D systems. These edge and surfaces states are protected by topological symmetry order that is based in spin-orbit coupling and in the invariance under time reversal operator. The main purpose of this work is to analyze the evolution of the surface state from HgTe and CdTe alloys observing the band inversion and the effect of d atomic orbital on the band inversion and the spin-orbit coupling intensity. Results where obtained using density functional theory with a local spin density approximation and the Hubbard correction (SLDA+U) considering relativistic effects and spin polarization.

We determine the complex refractive index (N) of a semiconducting CdSe thin film from the measurements of the transmittance spectrum. The experiment allow us to obtain, from the real part of refractive index, the N dispersive law, and from the imaginary part, the absortion coefficient. An energy dependence analysis of the absorption coefficient is done to obtain the value of the forbidden band ''GAP'' of thesemiconductor and the nature of the optical transition.

Once quantum computer is running it is possible to expect that more quantum computers are interconnected in the same manner as the classical ones, so that Internet is seen as an imminent task in these advanced devices. As in classical machines, the well-known In-Band-Full-Duplex (IBFD) technique can be applied in order to enhance performance. However, quantum computers depend strongly on field interaction as the responsible to achieve Rabi transitions. Using the Quamtum Fourier transformation we interpret the resulting equations in terms of the Hamiltonian action.

Algunos...

Celiac disease (CD) is an immune reaction to gluten containing foods such as rye, wheat and barley. This condition affects individuals with a genetic predisposition; it targets the small bowel and may cause symptoms including diarrhea, malabsorption, weight loss, abdominal pain and bloating. The diagnosis is made by serologic testing of celiac-specific antibodies and confirmed by histology. Certain endoscopic characteristics, such as scalloping, reduction in the number of folds, mosaic-pattern mucosa or nodular mucosa, are suggestive of CD and can be visualized under white light endoscopy. Due to its low sensitivity, endoscopy alone is not recommended to diagnose CD; however, enhanced visual identification of suspected mucosal abnormalities through the use of new technologies, such as narrow band imaging with magnification (NBI-ME), could assist in targeting biopsies and thereby increasi...

The behavior of the second band of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) near the Peruvian coast during early 2017 is studied, using precipitation, surface winds, sea surface temperature (SST) and atmospheric variables in different isobaric levels. The proposal of a daily index (Ia) to identify opportunely the formation of this band and the Lorenz energy terms in the region is also considered. This band was present from late January to early April 2017, associated with an anomalous dipole of sea level pressure between the east and west eastern Equatorial Pacific that configured anomalously northerly surface winds and the release of southeasterly trade winds near Peru. In medium levels, a zonally oriented positive mixing ratio anomaly was observed in early March over the ITCZ second band, associated with heavy rain systems over the northern Peruvian coastal region. In the same period,...
