The Evidence-Based Dentistry (EBD) is a worldwide-recognized concept in the health sciences. It seeks to make clinical decisions based on reliable data from well-conducted researches, which with professional’s experience and patient’s preferences become the best option that can be offered to them. The aim of this review is to summarize the principles of EBD. Hand search of relevant literature was made, OBE concepts and principles are shown as well as examples of the formulation of the PICO question, the search and critical appraisal of information, and the application of that knowledge to ou r patients. It is concluded that the EBD allows the use of the best scientific evidence without leaving aside the experience, professional judgment and patient’s preferences in the decision-making of the daily dentistry practice.

Objective: To determine the color stability of two types of flow composites immersed in artificial saliva with three different pH values, using Vita Easy-shade digital colorimeter. Materials and methods: An experimental, comparative and in vitro study is proposed using 90 discs made from two fluid resin markings of 10mm diameter and 1mm thickness, light-cured using the same lamp, after being immersed in distilled water and made a first registration color using Easy-shade digital colorimeter, the samples were divided into three groups and in turn into three subgroups, becoming submerged in artificial saliva with different pH of 5, 6 and 7 respectively for 7 days, making a new color taking by digital colorimeter, later the samples were submerged in beet juice as a pigmenting agent for 24 hours, after this period they were washed to eliminate pigment residues and made a third color take. Re...

In Ecuador, there is a high prevalence and incidence of different oral pathologies, this scenario is similar in several countries in the region. Oral diseases constitute a Public Health issue, since they involve a high investment in their management and control. Thus, an emphasis in preventive activities has been placed to improve the impact of oral diseases. Several measures have been taken by the Ecuadorian government to reduce the incidence of dental caries, including massive prevention programmes. For instance, fluoridation of food and water, school teaching of right tooth brushing techniques and dental floss use, early detection of bacterial plaque, delivery of educational talks, and sealant placement on occlusal surfaces of permanent teeth in schoolchildren from deprived urban and rural populations. Nevertheless, these strategies have not been monitored, evaluated or reported in or...

Objective: To analyze the knowledge, attitudes and practices that oral health teachers have in primary schools in Quito and San Cristobal Island (Galapagos), Ecuador. Methods: The research began with the validation of the self-surveyed survey on knowledge, attitudes and practices on oral health in teachers (CAPS teachers). Subsequently, this instrument delivered to 61 teachers from the two schools selected for the study. The descriptive statistics of these data were obtained, including the absolute and relative frequencies of the responses obtained. Results: The average score obtained in the total evaluation of the 61 teachers was 11.97 ± 2.37 points. When the data were analyzed by schools, the Quito school obtained an average of 12.06 ± 2.29, while the Galapagos school obtained an average of 11.29 ± 3.04 points. Conclusions: The knowledge in oral health of the teachers of the two edu...

Objectives: Our aim was to determine the prevalence of fluorosis among the population of children who live in Tumbaco Valley, Quito, Ecuador. We sought to establish its relation to the concentration of fluoride in the water supply of this área. Material and methods: The sample was 62 children who were selected based upon previously defined inclusion and exclusion criteria. All of the children were clinically examined; a photographic record of upper anterior teeth surfaces was performed. Results: The analyzed data showed that only 23,3% of the children surveyed had rates of dental fluorosis, with TF-2 being the most common. Chemical analysis of water from the supply source showed the presence of fluoride in very small amounts which did not exceed 0,32 mg/L. Conclusions: The low presence of fluoride in the examined water sources explains the absence of fluorosis in the assessed population...

Background: The rate of successful pregnancies brought to term has barely increased since the first assisted reproductive technology (ART) technique became available. Vasodilators have been proposed to increase endometrial receptivity, thicken the endometrium, and favour uterine relaxation, all of which could improve uterine receptivity and enhance the chances for successful assisted pregnancy. Objectives: To evaluate the effectiveness and safety of vasodilators in women undergoing fertility treatment. Search methods: We searched the following electronic databases, trial registers, and websites: the Cochrane Gynaecology and Fertility Group (CGF) Specialised Register of controlled trials, the Cochrane Central Register of of Controlled Trials, via the Cochrane Register of Studies Online (CRSO), MEDLINE, Embase, PsycINFO, the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL)...
