Objectives: To determine the prevalence of antiphospholipid antibodies in patients with connective tissue diseases. Design: Descriptive transversal study. Setting: Dos de Mayo Hospital and Institute of Clinical Research, San Marcos University, Lima, Peru. Participants: Patients with diagnosis of collagen disease and healthy subjects. Interventions: In 100 patients with collagen disease and 50 healthy subjects, all from Metropolitan Lima and attended between January and November 2008, fibrinogen, prothrombin time, partial activated thromboplastin time, anticardiolipin antibody and lupus anticoagulant were determined. Main outcome measures: Presence of anticardiolipin antibodies and lupus anticoagulant. Results: Patients with collagen diseases presented antiphospholipid antibodies in 17%, lupus anticoagulant in 13%, and IgG anticardiolipin in 4%. Individualizing connective tissue diseases,...

Introduction: Case reports are a type of biomedical publication that allow us to share experiences regarding the etiology, diagnosis, therapeutics, and prognosis of anecdotal events that occur both in one and in several patients during clinical practice. Objective: to elaborate methodological recommendations for the elaboration of the discussion of a clinical case report. Methods: A narrative review of international guidelines and available evidence was carried out. Results: A total of 411,227 articles were located, finally selecting 10 narrative review articles. Discussion: The discussion is the most relevant section of the case report despite being considered by some journals as an optional contribution. We recommend for the elaboration of the discussion, to follow the following four steps: a) finding and comparison with the current evidence, b) justification of the causality of the fi...

Systemic or cutaneous-visceral loxoscelism is the most severe clinical presentation of loxoscelism. Currently there is no validated laboratory diagnostic method that allows us to confirm the presence of this disease in the face of arachneism. However, there is a clinical prediction rule (CPR), which allows us to predict the evolution of a bite towards a systemic condition and which would be useful in emergency rooms. We present the case of a woman who developed the systemic picture of loxoscelism to whom a new CPR was applied for the early detection of systemic loxoscelism, presenting adequate performance for early evaluation in emergency services.

Background: It has been described that, at the medullary level, SARS-COV2 can compromise hematopoiesis, manifesting with cytopenias and there are only studies carried out in autopsies. Objective: to describe the morphological characteristics of the bone marrow of patients hospitalized for COVID-19 pneumonia at the Hospital Nacional “Dos de Mayo”. Material and methods: Retrospective cross-sectional observational study carried out in patients over 18 years of age with a confirmed diagnosis of COVID-19 by rapid or molecular testing, and those with incomplete, illegible or missing medical history and / or bacterial or fungal pneumonia were excluded. The findings of the bone marrow readings were confirmed by a trained hematologist, collecting data such as: hemosiderin, cellularity, myelo / erythroid ratio, myeloid series, megakaryocytic and plasma cells. Descriptive statistics based on fr...

Introduction: Despite the fact that hematological alterations at the peripheral level are widely known, little is known about the alterations caused by COVID-19 at the bone marrow level. Objective: To determine the morphological alterations of the bone marrow caused by COVID-19. Material and methods: Systematic review and meta-analysis. Observational studies and reports and case series were included and editorials, reviews, letters to the editor were excluded. A search was performed in Pubmed, ScienceDirect and Scielo. The risk of bias was assessed using the NewCatell-Ottawa and Hassan Murad scales for case reports and series. The outcomes were the morphological parameters of the bone marrow. For the quantitative synthesis of the information, a proportion meta-analysis was performed using random effects in RStudio. Results: Hypercellularity occurred in 65% (95% CI: 51%-78%), maturation a...

Objectives. To determine and correlate the bone mineral density (BMD) and the biochemical markers of bone metabolism in adults 30 to 40 years old from Lima, Perú, in year 2018. Methods. A total of 84 women and 53 men, 30 to 40 years old from Lima, Perú, were submmited to a descriptive, transversal study. They did not have symptoms nor treatment for bone metabolic diseases. Information about their present health state, personal and familiar physiological and pathological history and physical examinatión were registered. BMD was measured by dual energy-X-ray absorptiometry in spine, hip and forearm. Parathormone, osteocalcine, 25-hidroxi-vitamine-D, luteinizing hormone, estradiol in women, testosterone in men, calcium, phosphorus, alkaline fosfatase, total and fractionated proteins, creatinine were measured in blood; in urine N-telopéptide, calcium and pho...
