Introduction: GeneXpert is a revolutionary tool for tuberculosis (TB) detection, with its main advantage being its speed and accuracy in identifying the pathogen and detecting rifampicin resistance within hours. Objective: To determine the diagnostic performance of GeneXpert MTB/RIF compared with bacilloscopy for the diagnosis of pulmonary tuberculosis in adult Peruvian patients. Methods: A cross-sectional analytical study was conducted based on a review of secondary databases. The study population included patients treated at a hospital in northern Peru between 2019 and 2022 who underwent diagnostic tests for tuberculosis, such as bacilloscopy, GeneXpert, and culture. Patients with incomplete records and those with results reported as errors were excluded. Results: A total of 800 out of 1,044 samples were selected for tuberculosis diagnosis, of which 75.3% (n = 601) were positive. The m...

Cyberchondria has intensified in contexts of infectious outbreaks, such as COVID-19, and may be influenced by local factors such as the endemicity of dengue in certain regions of Peru. Objective: To explore dengue-related cyberchondria among medical students in a dengue-endemic area in northern Peru. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted at the National University of Piura, using self-reported questionnaires such as the Cyberchondria Severity Scale (CSS-12) and the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale (DASS-21). Students without informed consent or with a recent diagnosis of dengue were excluded. Results: In a total sample of 192 participants, the average cyberchondria severity score was 27.7 ± 7.2. Significant variables included rural origin (p=0.029), being in the middle cycles of the course (p=0.001), and high levels of anxiety (p<0.001) and stress (p=0.030...

Introduction: Invasive pulmonary aspergillosis is a severe fungal infection caused by Aspergillus species. Case report: A 61-year-old male presented to the emergency department of a tertiary hospital in Piura with acute respiratory failure. He was admitted with a diagnosis of complicated pneumonia, with differential diagnoses including pulmonary abscess, pulmonary tuberculosis, and malignancy. However, during his hospital stay, rapid progression on pulmonary imaging combined with a positive galactomannan result in bronchoalveolar lavage led to the diagnosis of invasive pulmonary aspergillosis (IPA), which responded well to antifungal treatment. Conclusion: Early identification and a multidisciplinary approach are key to improving the management and prognosis of invasive pulmonary aspergillosis.

A 22-year-old male patient who went to the emergency room at Hospital III-1 José Cayetano Heredia in Piura due to acute respiratory symptoms, was hospitalized with Acute Respiratory Failure associated with a moderate Asthma Attack, Community Acquired Pneumonia and Systemic Lupus Erythematosus as a history. Throughout the hospital course, a complex interaction between asthma and the pulmonary manifestations of SLE is evident. For this reason, lupus pneumonitis was proposed as a diagnosis, with a good response to antibiotic treatment and pulse corticosteroids.

Introduction: COVID-19 vaccines have been essential in controlling the pandemic, but concerns have arisen regarding their adverse effects. This study evaluates the incidence of adverse effects in vaccinated patients attending Pneumology outpatient clinics in the EsSalud Piura network in 2022. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 254 patients over 18 years of age who received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine (Pfizer, Sinopharm, or AstraZeneca). Data were obtained through a review of medical records and structured interviews. Adverse effects were classified as local or systemic. Crude (RPc) and adjusted prevalence ratios (RPa) were calculated using Poisson models, adjusting for age, sex, comorbidities, and prior COVID-19 infection. Results: Most patients 60.6% were ≤60 years old, and 86.2% had comorbidities. RPa showed that respiratory infection sequelae significant...
