Th e armored suckermouth catfi sh Pterygoplichthys pardalis (Castelnau 1855) is an invasive fi sh species in several regionsin Mexico, including the fl uvial lagoon systems of the state of Campeche in southeastern and in Mazatlán, Sinaloa innorthwestern of the country. Although several studies have mentioned the negative impacts of this invasive fi sh in theaquatic environment, few reports exist about the natural predators that may help to control these fi sh populations. Inthis study, we investigate the feeding predation by double-crested cormorants Phalacrocorax auritus (Lesson, 1831) onP. pardalis in the Palizada River, southeast of the Gulf of Mexico, and in the the Laguna del Camarón in northwesternMexico. Th e evidence of feeding found in stomach contents of these birds indicates that feeding habits might beingadapted to changes in the resident fi sh community after the introduct...

Trichodinids are the most common ectoparasites of both freshwater and marine fishes. Their generic identification is relatively easy, while the specific diagnosis is laborious due to the high intraspecific variability of some species. Four species of the genus Trichodina from the skin and fins of Oreochromis niloticus (Linnaeus, 1758) Egyptian black variety were identified by means of morphological methods and the use of digital correlation invariant to position, rotation and scale by species specific composite filters. Trichodina magna Van As Bassson, 1989 and Trichodina nigra Lom, 1961 represent new records of host and geographic location, while Trichodina centrostrigata Van As, Basson & Van As, 1998 and Trichodina heterodentata Duncan, 1977, have already been reported for O. niloticus in Mexico. The automatic identification of the four species studied was done through the developm...

The objective was to describe a paradigm of transformation of biomonitors to the quality of bioecotoximonitors in aquatic ecotoxicology. The limitations of physico-chemical and microbiological parameters in environmental decision making to recognize the quality of aquatic ecosystems are discussed. The restriction of physical-chemical and microbiological parameters allowed the use of biological indicators to be considered as a bioassessment method. However, their presence or absence also means a disadvantage in the correlation with undesired exposures or intra-seasonal comparison. Therefore, biomonitors emerge that offer various interpretative possibilities. However, implicit in the concept of biomonitors is the assessment of quality at any time and period. A consequence of poor water quality is the presence of certain parasites as indicator organisms that can infect the biomonitors thems...

The aim of the study was to describe the metaphysics in the logical theorization of the bioecotoximonitor concept: reflection. The study was conducted from March to August 2023. It was considered, the transformation of the biomonitor to the quality of the bioecotoximonitor, logical construction of the formal system to the interpretation of arguments and causal theorization in the connection between: bioecotoximonitor and environmental conservation status of the aquatic ecosystem. The metaphysical question of the bioecotoximonitor concept was considered, the analysis from the monistic, pluralistic and instrumentalist distinction. The metaphysics in the logical theorization was based on the denominations validity and truth. The bioecotoximonitor only indicates the accumulation of information being a monistic stance, but if the bioevaluation in the bioecotoximonitor is based on the signific...

The search for biotools for the assessment of the environmental quality of aquatic ecosystems is a priority. Bioindicators and biomonitors are adequate for judgment, but not excellent in controlling multiple biases on ecotoxicological predictions. The objective was to describe the teleology of bioecotoximonitors in aquatic ecotoxicology. The teleology of bioecotoximonitors is based on a pyramid that guides the identification of ecosystem service importance, guidance on damage consequences, differential significance between one resource and another, as well as the need to apply assessments with bioecotoximonitors towards understanding the dynamics of ecosystem processes. The explanatory use towards the existential applicability of natural conditions, and in this case of the contamination of aquatic ecosystems, is what is relevant in the teleology of bioecotoximonitors. It is concluded tha...

Th e study aimed to describe the aesthetic value from a philosophical perspective in environmental biomonitoring of heavy metal pollution in aquatic ecosystems. Conducted between March and August 2023, the study focused on assessing aesthetics in this context. Aesthetic appreciation, aesthetic disturbance, and aesthetic integration were considered primary dimensions along with their respective indicators. It was emphasized that aesthetic appreciation in biomonitoring of heavy metal pollution highlights the importance of considering visual beauty and its relationship with environmental health. From a philosophical standpoint, this aesthetic assessment refl ects the ecosystem’s harmony and vitality. Aesthetic disturbance signals alterations in this harmony, indicating signifi cant value losses. Integrating aesthetics into monitoring programs not only protects the environment’s beauty b...

The selective interpretation of pollution data in a river impedes the precise and comprehensive understanding of environmental impact. Th e aim was to delineate the epistemological critical teleology of bioecotoximonitors in aquatic ecotoxicology. The application of epistemological critical teleology in aquatic ecotoxicology is paramount for a deeper and more eff ective comprehension of environmental challenges. This perspective transcends mere data accumulation, focusing on introspection regarding the purposes and meanings behind scientific inquirí. Bioecotoximonitors are not merely data collection tools but rather represent an opportunity to comprehend the interaction between living organisms and their surroundings. By establishing correlations between contaminant exposure and biological responses, they enable the projection of potential future scenarios and the design of more effecti...

Bioassessment in aquatic ecotoxicology faces challenges in achieving precision and depth in environmental analysis, particularly in the identification of contaminants and the assessment of aquatic ecosystem health. In response to this issue, the concept of the "bioecotoximonitor," has emerged as a potential solution for improving environmental evaluation. The objective was to analyze whether bioecotoximonitors represent a solid methodological advancement or if they constitute an illusion that oversimplifies ecological complexity. The methodological perspective of the study focuses on a critical and comparative analysis of the theoretical and practical dimensions of the concept. Considerations include the lack of empirical validation of the bioecotoximonitor and the need to address how multiple environmental factors may influence the accuracy of its application. The study suggests that, w...

Aquatic ecotoxicology faces the challenge of assessing the effects of pollutants on aquatic ecosystems with traditional methodologies that are often insufficient. The objective of the study was to describe ontological relativism in epistemological constructivism from the pragmatism of the bioecotoximonitor in aquatic ecotoxicology. The concept of the bioecotoximonitor emerges as an innovative solution, seeking to integrate and expand these methodologies for a more dynamic and holistic assessment. Based on ontological relativism, which views ecological reality as a dynamic construct, and epistemological constructivism, which understands knowledge as a construction based on interactions, the bioecotoximonitor offers a robust theoretical framework. This approach allows for a more nuanced understanding of ecosystems by considering the variability in organism responses to pollutants. The prag...

The aim of the study was to analyze the semantics in the factual interpretation of the concept of approximate truth of the bioecotoximonitor. The transformation of the biomonitor to the quality of bioecotoximonitor was considered for analysis, along with the monist, pluralist, and instrumentalist distinction during bioassessment with the bioecotoximonitor. Five criteria were indicated: environmental conditions, data interpretation, interpretation consistency, environmental variability impact, and applicability in bioassessment. The factual interpretation of the bioecotoximonitor, through five criteria, evaluates the understanding of truth in environmental systems. It emphasizes the importance of considering environmental conditions and flexible data interpretation. The structured criteria address from collection to practical application in environmental management, ensuring the relevance...

Human activity affects ecosystems; therefore, the search for comprehensive actions such as ecological restoration to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals continues to be a necessity. However, a first unfavorable scenario for ecological restoration in various places is socio-environmental conflicts. The solution to these problems requires the guarantee of intermediate actors. The objective was to characterize the mediator of socio-environmental conflicts for ecological restoration. In the scientific literature, the description of the mediator's juridical responsibility is limited. Six characteristics, seven functions and two objectives to be fulfilled by the mediator are considered. Among the aspects pointed out about ecological restoration, it was indicated that it implies a focus on the provision of ecosystem services and restitution in the face of biodiversity loss. Likewise, the ...

The educational system must train people responsible for the care and preservation of ecosystems. When there is environmental education in the population, then the awareness towards the implementation of programs and projects is more adequate, the exchange of knowledge dialogues is responsible and community participation becomes a priority. Th e objective of the study was to describe environmental education in ecological restoration. Ethical and axiological questions are assessed in the relationship between environmental education and ecological restoration. Likewise, it is indicated from the conceptualization of environmental economics and ecological economics, a new base infl uence to make environmental education responsible for ecological restoration. Environmental education as a process suggests the obligation to show awareness towards the care of natural resources, while ecological ...
