Introduction: Responses of oral-microflora-exposed dental pulp to a triple antibiotic paste (TAP), a mixture of ciprofloxacin, metronidazole, and minocycline in ointment with macrogol and propylene glycol, remain to be fully clarified at the cellular level. This study aimed to elucidate responses of oral-microflora-exposed dental pulp to capping with TAP in mouse molars. Methods: A cavity was prepared on the first molars of 6-week-old mice to expose the dental pulp for 24 h. The exposed pulp was capped with TAP (TAP group) or calcium hydroxide cement (CH group), in addition to the combination of macrogol (M) and propylene glycol (P) (MP, control group), followed by a glass ionomer cement filling. The samples were collected at intervals of 1, 2, and 3 weeks, and immunohistochemistry for nestin and Ki-67 and deoxyuride-5'-triphosphate biotin nick end labeling (TUNEL) assay were performed i...

Dental education comprises a variety of competences and fine motor skills that must be acquired by students not only in the classroom but also in preclinical laboratories and dental clinics. In Peru, the average duration of dental undergraduate programs is five years. While it is true that curriculums vary from one school to another, preclinical and clinical activities are usually initiated during the third and fifth semesters, respectively. While the curriculums of Peruvian dental school programs tend to emphasize the importance of know-how and clinical training, undergraduate students are also trained in complementary skills that enable them to deepen their understanding of the profession beyond the dental chair.

The arrival of the SARS-CoV-2 virus to our country has signified a major event in our recent history. The COVID-19 pandemic started in December 2019 in the city of Wuhan, China, and since then, has spread to almost every country in the world. Although the mortality rate is low (less than 5% of positive cases), patients who develop the disease may present a severe acute respiratory syndrome, which implies urgent hospitalization, and in the worst-case scenario, the assistance of a mechanical ventilator.

The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has represented a major challenge for human beings during 2020. At time this editorial is written (December 7th) there was a total of 66’422,058 confirmed positive cases and 1’532418 deaths worldwide, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). In our country, the latest report released by the Ministry of Health (MINSA) showed a cumulative of 973,918 confirmed cases including 36,274 deaths. This dramatic scenario has brought various limitations in all aspects of our lives, forcing us to adapt to the “new normality”, which includes strong protection measures to restrain the spread of the viral infection among our population. Although these restrictions have been progressively lifted with the passing of the months, educational activity at all levels has not yet been reestablished.

Careers in the area of health sciences combine the acquisition of basic knowledge and specific skills for clinical performance from the early stages of professional training. In the case of dentistry, these skills are extremely complex, which implies that the student has adequate prior knowledge of the structures of the oral cavity and its physiology.

Many of us probably associate the terms “mentoring” or “mentorship” with the traditional teacher-student relationship that we experienced at school, or perhaps, to the relationship “boss-employee” at any organization. In any event, the term “mentoring” is generally acknowledged as the involvement of a person with more experience (the mentor), and a less experienced one (the mentee) that needs to be advised in specific areas. Mentoring relationships focus on helping the mentee’s growth and the accomplishment of his/her goals, including several approaches to doing so1,2. A more precise definition can describe mentoring as person-centered, long-term transformational process that requires the establishment of a trustful, respectful and confidential relationship between the mentor and mentee3.

In vivo studies in dentistry require a high level of precision, since they involve the experimentation with a living organism, and further comprehensive histological analysis to validate the initial hypothesis. However, the process to obtained the histological slides to be studied is often wrongly minimized. In order to obtain high quality histological sections, which may be able to react favorably to more complex immunological techniques, it is necessary to preserve or "fix" the tissues of interest in an optimal manner. Intracardiac perfusion fixation has been described as a technique that offers superior results to other tissue fixation methods, allowing not only adequate sample stability, but also a deep cleansing and hardening of the tissues to allow further manipulation. Through a variation of the technique, it is possible to occlude the main arterial supply of the abdominal region ...

The Odontogenic Peripheral Fibroma is the most frequent form of Odontogenic Fibromas and seems to come from the superficial gingival epithelium or dental lamina residuals that remain in an extra bone location. The epithelial component resembles the dental lamina during the early stages of the odontogenesis. Although it has predilection for children and young adults, it can be presented in any age. It is most often observed in women than men.
