This work studies the interaction between natural dyes obtained from Peruvian Zea mays and Bixa orellana seeds and nanostructured titanium dioxide, in order to evaluate their function as sensitizers into solar cell devices. The effective attachment of dyes to the TiO2 layer is corroborated by the comparison of UV-Visible absorption and FT-IR spectra of the extracted dye solutions and sensitized TiO2 electrodes. The principal compounds from the seed extraction of Zea mays and Bixa orellana are cyanidin-3-glucoside (C3G) and bixin respectively, which were analyzed in an isolated dye/cluster TiO2 system by molecular dynamic simulation. The results showed that chemisorption is carried out through a consecutive deprotonation process, and Ti-O bond formation by the monodentate OH and COOH anchoring groups, for C3G and bixin respectively. Finally, we tested the effect of the dye - TiO2 interact...

Photoluminescent graphene oxide particles (PGOPs) were synthesized by hydrothermal treatment. The relative transmission spectra of the PGOPs in the infrared region between 800 cm?1 and 4000 cm?1 showed frequencies that characterize chemical species such as ethers (C[sbnd]O), ketones (CO[dbnd]), carboxylic acids (COOH), double bonds of carbon (C[dbnd]C) and water (H2O). The emission wavelengths were 568 nm for graphene oxide with green photoluminescence (GOGP) and 634 nm for graphene oxide with orange photoluminescence (GOOP) when excited with a light source of 375 nm. Moreover, the detection of light emission at 600 nm in the photoluminescent excitation (PLE) spectrum is detected with more intensity in GOGP than GOOP due to the presence of groups C[dbnd]C and carboxylates ions ([sbnd]COO?) linked to graphene (GN) and the photon effective emission time according to the decay profile for e...

Corn is the most cultivated cereal in the world, however, only 20% of the total mass corresponds to the edible part, leaving the rest as wastes, whose recovery is still a challenge. In particular, in Peru, maize crop residues usually get disposed by open-air incineration, impacting the nearby grounds and releasing greenhouse gases. Addressing this problem, this research focus on the extraction of cellulose from corn husk waste through the combination of both mechanical (drying, milling and sieving) and chemical treatments (alkaline treatment and bleaching). The cellulose was extracted with a 79.4% yield while its purity was estimated on 70.3%. On the other hand, the crystallinity and morphology of the sample were characterized by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy, respectively. The diffractogram allowed the identification of intense peaks in a characteristic pattern of c...
