The seasonal influence of tidal regimes on sulfidic conditions was studied in intertidal environments from a mangrove estuary in Northern Peru. Along two sampling stations, creek water and sediment cores were collected during the dry and wet seasons at all tidal phases (ebb, low, flow, and high tides). Physical-chemical parameters were measured in the creek water (temperature, salinity, pH, Eh, and DO), whereas pH, redox potential (Eh), and total organic matter contents were obtained from the sediment cores. In addition, total dissolved sulfide content ∑ (H2S, HS−, H2−) was measured from sediment pore water. During the dry and wet seasons, the creek water pH, Eh, and dissolved oxygen were lowest in low tide, whereas oxygenated conditions and higher pH and Eh values prevailed in high tide. The total organic matter content in sediments was higher during the dry season, with the highe...

Here we provide a global review on nutrient accumulation rates in mangroves which were derived from sixty-nine dated sediment cores, addressing environmental and anthropogenic influences. Conserved mangroves presented nitrogen and phosphorous accumulation rates near to 5.8 ± 2.1 and 0.8 ± 0.5 g m?2 yr?1, respectively. These values were significantly lower than those observed for mangroves impacted by coastal eutrophication, which were found to bury 21.5 ± 8.6 and 17.9 ± 2.4 g m-2 yr?1, of nitrogen and phosphorous respectively. Moreover, higher nutrient accumulation rates were found in mixed mangroves as compared to monospecific forests, and higher values were noted within vegetated areas as compared to mudflats. For South America and Asia, mangroves impacted by anthropogenic activities may result in up to seventeen-fold higher nitrogen and phosphorous accumulation rates in comparison...

Two methods of dehydration of strawberries (Fragaria chiloensis 1 .) ha ve been studied: spray-drying and freezedrying. It has been found that the optimum sequence for the drying operation is as follows: selection/classification , washing, steaming, pulp-extraction, conditioning and freeze-drying. The efficiency over the total solids obtained with this method is 86.48% compared to 66.02% when using spray-drying. The strawberry pulp was conditioned by water dilution of 1:1. For spray-drying, the pH was adjusted to 4.1 with NaHC03 , and for capsulating purposes were used: 1% CMC and 1.60% gum arabic by weight of pul p. For the dehydration by freeze-drying it was used: 1.2% CMC, 2.0% dextrine anda control sample without any additives. lt was found that for dehydration by spray-drying, 1.60% of gum arabic anda temperature of 1 802C for the hot air at the inlet should be u sed. For dehydratio...

We study compact invariant sets for holomorphic foliations on Stein manifold. As application, we show some dynamical properties concerning minimal sets (with singularities) of foliations and real analytic Levi-flat hypersurfaces in projective spaces.

The study aimed to examine the excessive use of the Internet in the mental health of students of Veterinary Medicine and Zootechnics at the National University of the Alti-plano, Puno, Peru. The study was descriptive, explanatory and cross-sectional, carried out with 226 students (152 men and 74 women) from I to X cycle, aged 23.4 ± 5.5 years. Mental health was related to anxiety, depression and the sleep quality index. Internet use was quantified through a survey, exploring the time (h/day) of use during the last 30 days; anxiety and depression were determined through the Hamilton Rating Scale (HARS and HDRS), with internal consistency, α = 0.93 and 0.89, respectively; and the sleep quality index using the Pittsburgh questionnaire (α=0.87). The results indicate that depression (β= 0.292; p<0.001), anxiety (β = 0.229; p<0.001) and excessive use of the Internet (β = 0.178; p&l...

The Peruvian coast experiences the largest interannual variability of sea surface temperature in the world due to the combined influence of the coastal upwelling and El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO). Although biological impacts of El Niño events have been widely reported, their effects on rocky intertidal communities remains largely unknown in Peru. Herein, we analyze the results of two biological surveys of rocky intertidal communities, conducted along 1400 km of the Peruvian coast. The first survey was conducted in 2015 yielding a snapshot of the distribution of rocky intertidal communities after 17 years of stable La Niña-like conditions. The second survey was carried in October 2017, after the 2015-16 and the 2017 El Niño events, which produced warm sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies up to 6 °C on the Peruvian coast. We find no changes throughout the latitudinal transect...

The highly productive waters of the Humboldt Current System (HCS) host a particular temperate ecosystem within the tropics, whose history is still largely unknown. The Pisco Formation, deposited during Mio-Pliocene times in the Peruvian continental margin has yielded an outstanding collection of coastal-marine fossils, providing an opportunity to understand the genesis of the HCS ecosystem. We present a comprehensive review, completed with new results, that integrates geological and paleontological data from the last 10 My, especially focusing on the southern East Pisco Basin (Sacaco area). We discuss the depositional settings of the Pisco Formation and integrate new U/Pb radiometric ages into the chronostratigraphic framework of the Sacaco sub-basin. The last preserved Pisco sediments at Sacaco were deposited ~ 4.5 Ma, while the overlying Caracoles Formation accumulated from ~ 2.7 Ma on...
