The study analyzes the various modernization projects at the Faculty of Medicine San Fernando, in the context of a serious institutional crisis at the end of the XXth century. Beginning from the thinking collective and thinking style categories proposed by Ludwick Fleck, we study the social and historical processes related to the different initiatives displayed in the ancient Peruvian school of medicine. Analysis of the different initiatives identified lead us to the hypothesis that San Fernando’s crisis as an academic collective is based in the proper contradictions of an unfinished institutional project that also manifests cyclically asynchronous and dysfunctional to the complex and changing Peruvian society’s institutional and cultural environment. The study systematizes the main characteristics of the different institutional modernization projects. Following an analysis of the cu...

This essay is a first approximation to the study of Hipolito Unanue’s thinking influence on the Peruvian epidemiology discourse construction. After describing general aspects of Unanue’s thought on the processes of disease propagation, we discuss how at the beginning of the XX century, in middle of the debate on the community problems and the various possibilities of the nation’s development, different authors retake Unanue’s ideas, who had already been raised up as a cultural hero of the medical community. We analyze his influence in the work of intellectuals like Paz Soldan, Olaechea and Lastres analyzing the diverse particularities of their thinking decodifying process and how this allowed the development of an identity process linked to the making of a ‘Peruvian conscience’, that is, of a particular way of seeing and transforming the world. This systemic way of approachin...

Infant mortality is one of the most sensitive indicators for assessing the living conditions and well-being of populations. It is also a valuable indicator for analyzing the deployment of interventions in the territory linked to public health. The study proposes to explore the extent to which the State density index is useful to understand the deployment of infant mortality in the territory and to contextualize its associated factors. For the data and the study period analyzed and in reference to the values of the 2007 Census, we highlight there is a limited relation of the State density index as a variable associated with infant mortality. Its usefulness as a criterion for the analysis of groups is emphasized, allowing a finer discrimination of the inequities and of the differential characteristics associated with the infant mortality at the provincial level.

The publication of this historiographical article has two objectives: The first is to pay tribute to the life trajectory of the sanfernandino doctor Rogelio Bermejo Ortega, one of the Peruvian pioneers of rural health, of community participation and intersectoral work in the development of general welfare. The second, to carry out from his life trajectory a first critical analysis of the implementation process of Primary Health Care (PHC) in Peru, based on the observations stated in his work “Primary Health Care in Peru”. Phyllodes tumor (Giant Intracanalicular Fibroadenoma) is a breast neoplasm. It shows an enhanced incidence in some countries during the last years. We aim to make an exploratory study of Phyllodes tumor’s epidemiologic features, based in 53 cases from Hospital Nacional Edgardo Rebagliati Martins (HNERM), Lima, between 1989 to 1995. Their mean age was 43,45 years. 67,9% were pre-menopausal women. 39,6% were from Lima and 69,8% of them were living there during diagnosis time. Histologically, most cases (81,13%) were benign. The malignant type were the less frequent. This was seen in patients who were 30 or more years old. These findings showed that the greater the number of pregnancies, the less the frequency of the tumor. Moreover, there is no evidence of high laboral or industrial exposition to cancerigenic agents. Migration to Lima (an urban zone) was associated with tumor among young...
