La comunicación de malas noticias es una habilidad clínica que todo médico debe poseer. En este estudio buscamos reconocer la manera en que los médicos residentes en un hospital nacional realizan la comunicación de malas noticias. Se encuestó a 19 residentes en un hospital público en el 2015. Se obtuvo que 100 % de los residentes no habían recibido ninguna capacitación sobre el tema a pesar que todos ellos habían dado alguna mala noticia en el último mes; 68,4 % reportaron tener sentimientos de frustración al dar malas noticias; 53,3 % de residentes reportaron que no había un lugar adecuado para dar malas noticias. Se concluye que la comunicación de malas noticias es una actividad frecuente en la práctica médica pero que generalmente no se enseña.

The use of the internet has increased significantly over the last decade. Pre-graduate students use the internet and social networks not only for recreational activities but also for academic activities. Moreover, some schools of medicine use these resources to teach medical students. Objective: To describe the use of social networks by pre-graduate medical students. Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried-out by using a questionnaire among pre-graduate medical students of the fifth year. La deficiencia de vitamina D es una condición de muy alta prevalencia en adultos mayores y puede presentarse como hipocalcemia sintomática. Se presenta un caso de una mujer de 75 años con convulsiones generalizadas por hipocalcemia con función renal y paratiroidea normales en la que se demostró niveles deficientes de vitamina D.

Breaking bad news is a clinical skill that every physician should possess. In this study, we seek the way in which the medical residents were communicating bad news in the hospital. Nineteen residents were surveyed in a public hospital in 2015. It was found that 100 % of residents had not received any training on the subject although all had given some bad news in the last month. Feelings of frustration in breaking bad news were found in 68,4 %. Besides, 53,3 % of the residents reported that there was not an adequate place to give bad news. It is concluded that breaking bad news is a frequent activity in medical professional practice but it is not generally taught.

Peer teaching is an educational methodology in which groups of students interact among each other. One group takes on the role of the educator and the other one takes on the role of the student, which benefits both of them. We report here the case of a program where this methodology was used by students in a medical school in Lima, Peru, who were tutors of junior students from the same faculty. The activities and resources used in this methodology are also described.

The COVID-19 pandemic forced the school of medicines to opt for a virtual teaching modality due to the suspension of face-to-face activities imposed by the lockdown. Objective: To determine the advantages and disadvantages of the virtual teaching modality perceived by the students in an introduction to clinical medicine course of a school of medicine in Lima, Peru. Methods: A virtual non-validated survey was circulated among fourth year medical students. Results: 94 studentes answered the survey (51%). Perceived advantages were to have more time to study (57.4%) and saving time in transportation (39.4%). The disadvantages were lack of contact with real patients (42.6%) and not to be able to obtain a clinical history from patients (39.4%).
