OBJECTIVES: Vaginal discharge and related aymptoms are frequent complaints among young women. The aim of this study was to describe Candida species isolated from vaginal discharge samples, as well as the relationship between Candida species and some of these symptoms. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A survey of consecutive patients presenting with vaginal discharge in the course of normal consultations was conducted at the Hospital Loayza. One hundred women with vaginal discharge were surveyed, with main outcome measures being clinical evaluation, microbiological assessment of vaginal swabs (including fresh samples, stainings, cultures and fermentation tests). RESULTS: Candida species were isolated from 24 samples. 12 of them were identified as C. albicans, 6 C. tropicalis, 4 C. famata, 1 C. glabrata and 1 C. kruseii. No differences were found between clinical presentation of Candida vulvovaginiti...

OBJECTIVES: To determine if presence of Enterococcus is related to pathological vaginal discharge (VD), as well its frecuency in VD, and its antimicrobial-resistance levels. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In a 4-month period were selected 98 women who attend to gynecological outpatient service due to VD; in samples of these VD leukocytes search, and isolation and culture procedures for Enterococcus and other female-genital-tract-associated microorganisms were performed. RESULTS: Enterococcus species, mainly E. faecalis were isolated from 39% of patients. Gardnerella vaginalis was identified in 44% of patients. Presence of enterococcus was associated with neither pathogeny nor anal intercourse. There was no penicillin-resistant Enterococcus strain. CONCLUSIONS: In the studied VD patients Enterococcus would not exert pathogenic activity, and was ranked 2th in frecuency after G. vaginalis. There wa...

Otorhinolaryngologic diseases in two Hospitals of Lima, hoth in children and ill adults, were studied looking for Moraxella catarrhalis along 12 months. 318 samples front the same miniher of patients were obtained; 40% of which were negative for pathogenic bacteria. Of the remaining 60%, 31% showed Staphilococcus aurcus as the causative agent, followed by Streptococcuspneumoniae in the 19%,Miraxella catarrhalis lit 16% and Haemophilus influenzae in 10%.The most important symptom was purulent rhinorrhea.Streptococcus pneumoniae, Moraxela catarrhalis and Haemophilus influetizae were isolated, ill most of cases, front boys younger than 14 years old.15% of the S. aureus isolated strains were oxacillin-resistant, 11% of tile S. neumoniae isolated strains were penicillin- resistant, and 70% of the M. catarrhalis as well as 5% of the H. influenzae isolated strains were, lactamase producers. Our ...

Objectives: To identify isolated S. pneumoniae serotypes correlating them with those covered by existing vaccines and determining antimicrobial resistance. Design: Descriptive, observational and longitudinal study. Setting: Daniel A Carrion Tropical Medicine Institute, School of Medicine, UNMSM. Biologic material: Streptococcus pneumoniae stocks. Interventions: Forty Streptococcus pneumoniae stocks isolated between 2002 and 2006 were serotyped at Carlos III Health Institute in Madrid, Spain; 15 were invasive, 11 isolated from localized infections, 6 from carriers and 8 were multiresistant. Main outcome measures: Protection of local existing vaccines to Streptococcus pneumoniae infections. Results: There were 14 different serotypes and most identified groups were 23, 19 and 6, 28,6% contained in the 7–valent vaccine, 42,9% in the 9-valent, 50% in the 11-valent and 71,4% in the 23-valent...
