“: Despite being a public health problem, less than a third of hypertensive patients manage to control blood pressure (BP). In this paper, we conducted a two-arm randomized controlled trial to investigate the efficacy of an SMS-based home BP telemonitoring system compared to usual care in patients with uncontrolled hypertension from a primary care center. This study was conducted between April and August 2018. Participants in the intervention arm used a custom-designed telemonitoring device for two weeks and were followed up for two additional weeks; controls were followed for 4 weeks. The main objective of this study is to evaluate the impact on blood pressure of a telemonitoring system using a blood pressure monitor adapted to send data via SMS to health providers in primary care centers for 4 weeks. In this trial, 38 patients were included in the analysis (18 in each arm), 68% were ...

Objectives: To determine the validity of the evaluation of alcohol consumption established by the national strategy to prevent and control STI-HIV-AIDS (ESNITSS) of HIV-infected adults that started anti-retroviral treatment (ART). Methods: Diagnostic study of HIV patients in a single hospital in Lima from September 2017 to January 2018 using data from a phase one study “Effectiveness of nursing counseling in improving adherence to ART among patient with alcohol consumption”. Three hundred and fifty patients were randomly selected among 4000 participants. Two gold standards evaluated alcohol consumption: 1. Last month alcohol consumption and ii; alcohol consumption identified by the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT). Sensitivity, specificity, safety of the evaluation and probability rates. Results: sensitivity and specificity were moderate for last month alcohol consum...

Objective: To identify alcohol consumption patterns associated with adherence to anti-retroviral therapy (ART) among HIV-infected patients. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conduced among 4000 patients above 18 years of age who received ART through the Estrategia Sanitaria Nacional de Prevención y Control de ITS- VIH/SIDA from 2004 in one hospital in Lima. We randomly selected 351 patients and performed the analysis from September 2017 to January 2018. Alcohol consumption was evaluated by measuring intake at least once per life, in the last year, in the previous six months, last month, and in the last seven days. Adherence was measured using the Simplified Medication Adherence Questionnaire (SMAQ). Prevalence ratios were calculated. The Comité de Ética del Hospital Nacional Cayetano Heredia y de la Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia approved the study. Results: 74% were males; t...

The Loreto region of the Peruvian Amazon faces many obstacles to health care delivery. The majority of the population is river-bound and lives below the poverty line, with some of the worst health indicators in Peru. To overcome these barriers and fill a gap in health services, an NGO-based provider known as the Vine Trust has been providing care since 2001 via a mobile ship clinic called the Amazon Hope. This study presents an assessment of the Amazon Hope, first reporting health indicators of the program´s catchment area, services provided, and program utilization.

Background: Global temperatures are projected to rise by ≥2 °C by the end of the century, with expected impacts on infectious disease incidence. Establishing the historic relationship between temperature and childhood diarrhea is important to inform future vulnerability under projected climate change scenarios. Methods: We compiled a national dataset from Peruvian government data sources, including weekly diarrhea surveillance records, annual administered doses of rotavirus vaccination, annual piped water access estimates, and daily temperature estimates. We used generalized estimating equations to quantify the association between ambient temperature and childhood (< 5 years) weekly reported clinic visits for diarrhea from 2005 to 2015 in 194 of 195 Peruvian provinces. We estimated the combined effect of the mean daily high temperature lagged 1, 2, and 3 weeks, in the eras before (200...

“Background: Estimating and analyzing trends and patterns of health loss are essential to promote efficient resource allocation and improve Peru’s healthcare system performance. Methods: Using estimates from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD), Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (2019), we assessed mortality and disability in Peru from 1990 to 2019. We report demographic and epidemiologic trends in terms of population, life expectancy at birth (LE), mortality, incidence, prevalence, years of life lost (YLLs), years lived with disability (YLDs), and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) caused by the major diseases and risk factors in Peru. Finally, we compared Peru with 16 countries in the Latin American (LA) region. Results: The Peruvian population reached 33.9 million inhabitants (49.9% women) in 2019. From 1990 to 2019, LE at birth increased from 69.2 (95% uncertainty interval 67.8...
