This paper seeks to add complexity to our perception of the factors contributing to maternal mortality. The levels remain high in Peru and many of the causes lie beyond medical frames of reference. Broadening the frame to incorporate human rights enables situating the actors in worlds of obligation, aspirations, identity and limitations. The proposed approach permits the incorporation of several little-known empirical studies. Taking into account their implications would suggest new strategies for the reduction of maternal mortality in Peru.

Promoting health and prolonging life are among the most cherished values ​​of any human society. Such universality contrasts, however, with how relative the multiple ways of understanding health and disease are. The differences begin with the classification of the ailments, the recognition of the symptoms and the association between these and the different pathological categories.
