El instrumento utilizado fue el índice de Higiene Oral de O’Leary. Para el análisis de los datos se ingresaron los puntajes obtenidos de la ficha de índice de O'Leary en las hojas codificadas del programa Excel, para su posterior análisis mediante la prueba T de Student, con una significancia del 5%. Resultados: Al evaluar el pre test y el post test, se encontró una mejora del índice de higiene oral a partir de la intervención educativa (p < 0.001); sin embargo, el índice de higiene oral no se asoció con el sexo (p = 0.558) ni con la edad (p = 0.592). Conclusiones: La intervención educativa es eficaz para mejorar el índice de higiene oral de los estudiantes.

Methodology: The design was experimental. The population consisted of students enrolled in 1st to 5th grade of high school at Colegio No. 81014 Pedro Mercedes Ureña, from which a sample of 268 students was obtained. The instrument used was the O'Leary Oral Hygiene Index. For the analysis of the data, the scores obtained from the O'Leary index card were entered in the coded sheets of the Excel program, for subsequent analysis by means of Student's t-test, with a significance of 5%. Results: When evaluating the pretest and posttest, an improvement in the oral hygiene index was found from the educational intervention (p < 0.001); however, the oral hygiene index was not associated with sex (p = 0.558) or age (p = 0.592).
