Our study provides information on the breeding and biometrics of Rusty-Margined Flycatcher Myiozetetes cayanensis in southwest Brazilian Amazonia. Myiozetetes cayanensis is distributed from Central America until north of South America. We made observations on reproduction and captures of this species in a terra firme forest fragment in the state of Acre, between 1999 and 2020 and we evaluated the breeding season in Brazil through citizen science data. We monitored nine nests between 2012 and 2020, built at a mean height of 1.8 m above ground. Clutch size was two, three or four eggs, incubated for 15 days. We monitored the development of six nestlings: minimum hatch weight was 2 g and young fledged with a mean mass of ca. 25.5 g. The constant growth rate (K) of nestlings was 0.18 with a growth asymptote of 22.8 g. Daily survival rate was 90% and 100% during the incubation and nestling per...

Molecular markers are DNA sequences that can be used to detect genetic variations associated with economically important traits in agriculture, so that they can be used by plant breeders as selection tools, increasing the efficiency of the traditional process, since the genotype of morphologically similar individuals excluding the influence of the environment. Molecular markers have been identified as a useful tool in the selection of superior genotypes; they have been used extensively in gene mapping, both for qualitative and quantitative traits and are also useful, to identify economically important traits in the breeding population and their subsequent manipulation in a short time. Plant breeding through marker assisted selection (MAS) has enormous potential to improve the efficiency of conventional methods. Agricultural biotechnology allows establishing an approximation between the p...

A survey was conducted in July 2004 to 160 families rearing Guinea pigs in the district of Santa Cruz, Cajamarca, with the aim of characterizing the production system of these animals. Men were more than 50 years of age (44.6%) and wives were mainly between 31 to 50 years old (42%). Primary school was the main grade of instruction. The main labour activity of the head of the family was agriculture (95.4%) and housekeeping for women (97.2%). Raising guinea pigs was mainly driven by the housewife under a family or traditional system. There were 20.4 guinea pigs on average per family, reared regardless of class, sex and age, preferably in the kitchen (88.8%), free (73.8%) or in pools (21.9%). Feeding was based on forages, weeds and kitchen waste. The main diseases reported were ectoparasites (90.1%) and the «plague» (76%). Guinea pigs were used for consumption and sale (71.2%) or only for...

This study aimed to discuss the results of a rostrotentorial decompressive craniotomy performed in a ram with had severe neurological signs. The patient had a clinical picture of right paresis product of a left hemisphere syndrome. A computerized axial tomography (CAT) was conducted and a tumour was found in the left cerebral hemisphere. In order to extend the productive life of the animal, given his value as a sire, a decompressive craniotomy was performed. Part of the cranial vault was dissected to provide more space to the brain and relieve intracranial hypertension caused by this pathology. Once recovered from anaesthesia, the animal presented a remission of neurological signs. The patient did not present the previous compulsive circling behaviour, ataxia and head-pressing behaviour. The patient remained under observation for a period of 20 days, during which he presented good temper...

Relationships among 18 Spanish and Iberoamerican pouter pigeon breeds were studied using data from 28 morphological characteristics based on the parsimony principle by the Fitch method for the qualitative analysis. A cluster dendogram was generated by the minimum variance between Ward groups for the quantitative analysis. Some logic in the trees was found but no clear relationships between breeds were observed. The value of Consistency Index was 0.38 and for the Retention Index was 0.416, indicating a medium fit between data and cladogram. The results showed that some of the morphological characteristics could not be informative or that complementary traits such behavioral ones would give better information in the construction of a logical classification tree for pouter pigeon breeds.

Article dealing with the main research findings derived from the study of significant visions of men about the practice of their paternity after divorce, from their own identity constructions of masculinity. The children’s care is the result of sociocultural assignations and power relations in addition to conjugal conflicts conducted wrongly (and legal limitations); this implies for them the impossibility -imposed- to participate in the breeding of their children. The transgression to law regulations related to father and children frequently results in the reduction of the parental link towards diffuse contacts that permit opportunities for manipulations; obstruction and elimination of the father's role, denying the mutual affective necessity and damaging the children's right to rely on both parents for their harmonious breeding.

A survey was conducted in order to study changes in body measurements in the Chiapas sheep breed. For this purpose 66 males and 79 females of various ages were measured: body weight, chest girth, knee perimeter, cannon perimeter, coronne perimeter, hock perimeter and ear length. The study reflects a regional change according to age, which are not isometrical. Body weight and chest girth are the most discriminative variables, which presented identical age regression trajectories for both sexes (F=1.006, p=0.317). Although body weight in adult male (>12 months, n=56) was greater than those of females (n=64) (U=1320, p=0.014), and no differences appeared for chest girth (U=1720, p=0.704), regression trajectories for both traits appeared similar.

Every year the government and sheep farmers imported, mainly from Chile, to improve the herds grazing in the highlands of the Andes, which is a significant sum of money which strongly affects the economy of the herds in the region. It was therefore necessary to study results obtained from these imports and if possible give new insights to make better use of the imported cattle.

In order to estimate the genetic effects – direct and maternal – linked to the expression of growth traits in lambs of Junín breed, four mixed models were applied in the study of the birth weight (PN), weaning weight (PD), first shearing weight (PE) and daily body weight gain from birth to weaning (GPND), through univariate and bivariate analysis. The models used in univariate analysis included as fixed effects year of birth and sex, and as covariates the mother’s weight at mating (for PN and PD), age of lamb at weaning (for PD and GPND), and age at first shearing (for PE). Model 1 included the fixed effects and the direct additive genetic effect (a); Model 2, similar to 1, added additive maternal genetic effect (m), considering Covam=0; Model 3, similar to 2, assumed Covam=Aam; and Model 4, equal to 3, added the maternal permanent environmental effect (c). All bivariate models...

A field study was conducted to determine the prevalence of antibodies againstMycoplasma meleagridis in 20 turkey breeder flocks located in the Lima region during2007. A total of 400 blood samples were taken from male and female birds of 8 to 57 weeksold, from Asia and Chilca districts. The indirect enzyme linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA) was used to measure serum antibodies against M. meleagridis. Three positivesamples were found (one per flock) representing a prevalence of 0.75 ± 0.04%. Theseropositive reactivity per affected flock was 5%, and without showing clinical signscompatible to those observed in the disease. According to these findings, it is concluded that the 20 flocks were not exposed to M. meleagridis and that the positive results maybe due to false positive seroreactions.

The aim of this study was to estimate the values of direct and maternal heritability and the variances due to the permanent environment from 1990 to 2012 in the Colombian Creole Blanco Orejinegro breed. In total, 10 698 data on growth variables were analyzed for birth weight (BW), adjusted weight at 240 days (PAJ240) and adjusted weight at 480 days (PAJ480). The derivative-free restricted maximum likelihood methodology (DFREML) was used, adjusting an animal model that included direct genetic effects, maternal and variations due to the permanent environment, assuming as fixed effects the year, time of birth, the sex of the calf and as covariate the mother's age at delivery. The heritability for BW were h²d = 0.31, h²m = 0.03 and σ²c = 0.07. the heritability values for PAJ240 were moderate and low (h²d = 0.18, h²m = 0.05, σ²c = 0.04) while for PAJ480 they were h²d = 0.17, h²m = 0...
