Social networking sites have had a significant impact on politics and democracy. They can bring about positive changes that contribute to establishing a more effective and complete democracy. In this study, we investigate the relationship between social networks and democratic effectiveness in Latin American countries. We conducted a quantitative and inferential statistical analysis using representative surveys from2023 to demonstrate that the internet and social networks have a notable impact on the democratization process of these countries. Our study challenges the hypothesis proposed by Lipset that a nation’s economic prosperity contributes to strengthening democracy.

It is clear that social movements are not the same since the emergence of social networks. They have definitely revolutionised the way we express ourselves, communicate and organise. However, they are a double-edged tool. In this essay I analyse the main characteristics of social movements in the network era, mainly from two perspectives: that of Manuel Castells and that of Byung-Chul Han. Thus, I will determine whether they are experiencing a favourable or detrimental development with respect to the achievement of their objectives and, above all, I will make visible the new obstacles that appear in virtuality in order to overcome them.

The Inter-American Democratic Charter (IDC) was adopted in 2001 by member states of the Organization of American States (OAS) as a renewed instrument for the defense of democracy, not only against traditional coup d´etat but also to face serious violations to horizontal accountability. The second assumption took into consideration, as a precedent, the political situation in Peru during Alberto Fujimori's administration (1995-2000), defined as a competitive authoritarian regime by Political Science and Constitutional Law scholars. However, during the last decade to the presentwe find in Latin America several countries with governments where the principle of checks and balances has been eroded as a result of measures adopted by their respective executive branch. This situation suggests the following concerns: The liberal democratic model of the IDC is in cris...

The present research’s topic is how was the political parties’s participation during the end of Fujimorismo. It is specially analyzed partie’s constitution, identifying leaders and their political ideology. Another relevant section of the research is about the relations with their social bases, explaining their weaknesses and strenghts in dealing with this issue. First, parties that emerged after 2000 are characterized by an structure lacking of institucional bases. In this context, technocracy becomes the most important institucional reference, aside with new political ideologies that compete in the electoral arena

Retrospective of Peruvian education in the last century, which distinguishes four demarcating milestones: 1. Education as a privilege in oligarchic society; 2. The crisis of the oligarchic state and a new order in education; 3. The counter-reform and the commodification of education and social rights; and 4. The civilizational crisis and the questioning of the neoliberal educational model. The article makes a reading of the relationship of education with power, with society and with the process of transformation of the country. Starting from a combined analysis of five components, a general and articulating interpretation of what happened in Peruvian education in the last century is attempted. These components are: political time, the role of the State, the right to education and the priority of education on the agenda. It is possible to visualize the advances and setbacks of a process t...

The paper examines the origin and conception of antitrust policies in Peru, highlighting the historical context, theoretical principles, motivations, values and interests that explain their adoption since the end of 1991. As a comparative reference, the paper delves into the origin and controversies on antitrust in the U.S. and post-war Germany. In contrast to these experiences, we show that competition rules in Peru were adopted without further discussion of their nature and objectives, ignoring the serious consequences of an excessive concentration of economic power on democracy and social order.

This essay undertakes a discursive analysis of three statements made by former vice-president García Linera in the post-referendum juncture. There, it was assumed, under the indigenist populist theory, that the reelection of President Morales was indispensable as he “sutures” the popular field. In the present essay it is stated that the re-election project as a political imperative implied an antagonistic confrontation that could not be solved in the field of the “political”. A radical heterogeneity, with an extreme dislocation of the institutional “floor” was seen as a minor consideration, subordinated to the advance of the “constituent power”. This essay reflects about the role and value of the institutional order in processes where a struggle for radical democracy was at stake.

This article analyses how the concept of citizenship is addressed in 15 Peruvian cybermedia platforms and how Internet users use this term on the basis of the information published, in order to know the semantic coincidences and differences in media and public agendas. This research was carried out using a mixed method which combines the classical analysis of news’ content, computer analysis of users’ comments and interviews. Among findings validated by media journalists, the little attention paid by platforms to citizens is highlighted, as well as the divergence between the approaches of the senders and users. Some solutions to the abovementioned misunderstanding in this field of unquestionable public interest that affects both public debate and the development of citizens who are aware of their roles in society are proposed.

This article outlines the substantive content of Latin American Indigenous Constitutionalism; as a locution of millenary cognitive practices, social mobilizations and emancipatory uprisings that validate the collective epistemological construction of the managerial sense of the State, society, and life: this is their standard of recognition. One goal is to connote how this Constitutionalism radiates a political approach that unhinges the legionaries of nineteenth century, of transnational constitutional theory and the “Lex Mercatoria”; And, in the other side, reveal the ineffectiveness of the so-called New Constitutionalism implemented under the guidelines of the Report of the Trilateral Commission of 1975. Three key conditions of the Latin American socio-economic political crisis of the 1960´s and 1970´s are described as backgrounds, and decisive for the establishment of military ...
