This article explores the intersection of aided self-help housing and modernist architectural culture through the early career of the English architect John F. C. Turner, who emerged as a prominent theorist of aided self-help housing beginning in the 1960s. The focus is on Turner’s development of an architectural practice following his arrival in Peru in 1957, at the invitation of architect and planner Eduardo Neira. Turner spent the next couple of years in Arequipa, working for a government agency charged with regularizing the city’s urbanizaciones populares. This culminated in a trial aided self-help housing project initiated after an earthquake in 1958 caused widespread damage to Arequipa’s housing stock. The article explores how these seminal on-the-ground experiences informed Turner’s later theoretical writings.

This article addresses the public and political participation of Clorinda Matto de Turner, from the written word, in the late nineteenth-century Peru. Analyzing this character implies to tackle the complex and at times contradictory risks that Peruvian intellectuals —in this case, a woman— took towards modernity in said period, and the resistance imposed by conservative groups on these literary avant-gardes. Using her novels and newspaper articles, we addressed the intellectual career of Clorinda Matto in the 1880s and 1890s, considering her proposals for the modernization of public life. In particular, her approaches to female education, which earned her the clerical and conservative opposition that ended up motivating her participation, from the press, in political life, and finally, her exile.

“Cuerpos cosificados: Una lectura de Herencia (“Objectified bodies: A reading aboutInheritance”) by Clorinda Matto de Turner” examines how the female body works, above all, in the 19th-century capitalist society of Lima. We see how Margarita, theprotagonist, must advertise her body according to the fashion of the time, because ithelps her to search and find a husband. However, in order to have access to luxuryitems, she must enter into the market mechanisms of Lima: consumption, purchaseand sale of thousands of objects that, in turn, involve her psychologically and createconfusion to Margarita and Lucia –her stepmother. Thus, in the work, fashion helps topretend a social position in order to hide body deformities and to give the body a valueof use and exchange according to the Marxist logic. Finally, Margarita, in Inheritance, precisely reveals this construction of the female bod...

Combining part of the extensive literature on the literary production of Clorinda Matto de Turner with a feminist ideological framework, this article examines the ideology of gender constructed in relation tomodernity, gender policies and national imaginary in two of his short stories, “Pálida!... pero es ella...! Novela homeopática con pretensiones espiritistas” and “Amor de redondel. Cuento a modo de novela”. This ideology, superficially, presents instabilities and contradictions. However, it is through these apparent contradictions that Matto de Turner could manage her reformist program around gender and national reform without apparently altering the hegemonic rule.

A case of bilateral gonadoblastoma in a yearold girl with Tumer's syndrome and positive SRY antigen is presented. As the kariotype showed 45 X / 46 XY mosaicism, bilateral gonadal biopsy by laparoscopy was done. Pathology confirmed bilateral gonadoblastoma and bilateral gonadectomy was then performed, with satisfactory post operative evolution. Prophylactic gonadectomy is recommended in cases of Turner’s syndrome with positive SRY antigen.

Turner’s syndrome is a genetic disorder caused by lack of an X chromosome. In some cases it is present with XY mosaicism, with increased risk of malignant gonadal tumors. It is important to determine the presence of the Y chromosome to perform prophylactic removal of the dysgenetic gonads. We present the case of a patient with Turner’s syndrome 45,X0/46,XY mosaicism associated to pure giant yolk sac tumor. This association of malignancy in a patient with mixed gonadal dysgenesia is extremely rare. Keywords: Turner’s syndrome, mosaicism, gonadal dysgenesia gonadal, yolk sac tumor.

The following paper aims to exThe following paper aims to explain the processes of production and interpretation of utterances in human communication from the point of view of Sperber and Wilson’s Relevance Theory. Through the qualitative approach and the explanatory method, the paper exposes a set of approaches based on the ostensive-inferential events of textual interpretation applied to conventional and non-conventional acts of language with emphasis on the pragmatic view of discourse that prioritizes the contextual effect of the phenomenon of communication through overt and assumed acts within linguistic interaction. Thus, on a representative sample of fifty-seven texts contained in the Tradiciones de doña Clorinda Matto de Turner, the analysis of the levels of discourse interpretation was carried out by resorting to the complex functioning of the cognitive processes that regulate...
