This study is based on a large-scale project examining mobile phone use among young Latinos in six different countries: Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, the United States, and Uruguay. Following the uses and gratifications tradition as a theoretical framework, researchers used a two-stage research design involving both qualitative and quantitative research methodologies to analyze how young adult Latinos use their mobile phones, and the perceived gratifications obtained from their use and comparisons to other forms of technology. A total of 1,320 subjects were surveyed across the six countries, yielding a rich data set that is only partially examined in this particular paper. The results indicate similarities and differences among the six counties and offers both theoretical and practical findings, as well as suggestions for future research and investigation.

The objective of this study is to determine validity and reliability of the Mobile Phone Dependency Test (CPDT), in a 22 items Likert scale-based instrument. The Test was administered to two samples, a public university (N=1044) and a private university (N=356) in the Peruvian city of Arequipa. Validity was determined using an exploratory factor analysis. Three factors were identified: abstinence and tolerance (α=0,901), abuse and problems with impulse control (α=0,853), and problems with excessive mobile phone use (α=0,853). Additionally, percentile ranks were created for both public and private universities.

Sexual objectification is one of the ways young people socialize on social media and has become a challenge in digital child and adolescent protection due to its impact on sexual maturity and self-esteem. This research aims to understand the perceptions of both experts and young people regarding sexual socialization, as well as the motivations behind adolescents' use of sexual content they consume and/or exchange on social media. The methodology consisted of 14 semi-structured interviews with experts and a survey conducted with 421 adolescents who participated in digital sexual education workshops between 2022 and 2024. The results show that experts identify approval—through sexual display—as a key factor in adolescents' use of social media. However, most young people do not perceive a risk in using social media to send nude images of their bodies, either for themselves or others, as...

Objective: To determine the frequency of aggression and antisocial behavior in university students with mobile phone dependence. Materials and methods: Sixty-six (66) university students from 18 to 25 years old (54.5 % females) participated in the study. They completed the Mobile Phone Problematic Use Scale (MPPUS) to assess the mobile phone dependence, and the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory 2-RF (MMPI-2-RF) to assess the antisocial behavior and aggression. Results: Twenty-two point seven percent (22.7 %) of the sample showed mobile phone dependence (cutoff point: 80th percentile). Additionally, a statistical significance (p <0.01) was observed in eight scales of the MPPI-2-RF, including CR4, AG and AGGR-r, which are related to aggression and antisocial behavior. Conclusions: There is a relationship between mobile phone dependence and the scales assessing aggression...

During the transition from high school to on-campus college life, students leave home and start facing enormous life changes, including meeting new people, taking on more responsibilities, being away from the family, and dealing with academic challenges. These changes lead to an elevation of stress and anxiety, affecting students’ health and well-being. With the help of smartphones and their rich collection of sensors, we can continuously moni tor various factors that affect students’ behavioral patterns, such as communication behaviors associated with their health, well-being, and academic success. In this work, we try to assess college students’ communication patterns (in terms of phone call duration and frequency) that vary across various geographical contexts (e.g., dormitories, class buildings, dining halls) during different times (e.g., epochs of a day, days of a week) using ...

Aware of the unstoppable advance of localization and its influence on the translation industry, this paper aims at providing a mobile application localization module for the translator curriculum. With this goal in mind, we describe the teaching module conducted with 24 undergraduate translator trainees as part of the Localization course (Degree in Modern Languages and Translation, University of Alcalá, Spain). Following a socio-constructivist methodology, qualitative data were collected via a group session and a questionnaire, which allowed evaluating the teaching proposal. Upon examination of the results, we can state that the main challenges are related to linguistic and technical issues and that their training is a must if we want our students to be ready for what comes ahead.
