Electrical power consumption in Peru increased on average by 5.1% between 2002 and 2011, while demand increased from 2 700 MW to 4 800 MW as a consequence of the increase in GDP. On the other side, photovoltaic (PV) technologies have been used in Peru for power generation in a few thousand small solar home systems (SHS) in the last 25 years, through various rural home electrification programs. This has permitted to accumulate a large amount of experience, which would open the possibility to consider the installation of larger PV systems with connection to the grid. Likewise, in the last five years, power generating plants have been installed to inject power directly in the National Power Grid (SEIN, from its Spanish acronym) without any substantial intervention of the national engineering community. One can see that in this scenario of technological evolution, PV technologies is present ...

This study aimed to analyze the differences in condom use with respect to the level of information about HIV, and the motivation and behavioral skills to use condoms in males deprived of freedom from three age strata. A total of 1,104 males belonging to long-term pretrial detention facilities for adolescents (comunidades de diagnóstico) and a social rehabilitation center in Mexico City were evaluated. They were divided into three groups using as criteria the distribution assigned by age quartiles, as well as the comparison between those who used and those who did not use a condom in their last sexual intercourse. A 3x2 factorial analysis was carried out and differences were found regarding the level of information and behavioral skills in relation to the age groups and condom use; however, there were no significant differences in the motivation. The results are discussed in terms of the...

The aim of this paper is to describe a group of families of a low socio-economic status in which child abuse and sexual abuse has been identified, linking such infringement of children rights with family stressors and social support to analyze the implications such link has for psychosocial interventions. The sample was composed by 40 adults who had children and adolescents under their care who receive help from services specialized in child abuse in Uruguay. It was found that the families studied had high socioeconomic vulnerability, childcare mainly done by women, children who had experienced polyvictimization, a high number of stressors and a low perception of social support. Conclusions drawn outline the importance of considering these variables when designing intervention programs that focus on promoting changes in parental practices that can be long lasting.

Although the prevalence of anemia has decreased in the last decades, global anemia prevalence remains at around 30 % and is estimated to contribute to nearly 9 % of global years lived with disability. An increased appreciation of the multiple interacting causes of anemia to include nutritional, infectious and genetic causes is not reflected in government programs to address anemia which focus only on iron supplementation, which may underlie their limited effectiveness. Additionally, several studies question the validity of the hemoglobin cut-off points used to define anemia, first proposed in 1969 by the WHO, especially those recommended for use in populations at high altitude (HA), as populations at HA generally exhibit higher hemoglobin levels as one of several possible adaptations to living at HA. Use of this criteria may increase 5-6 times the prevalence of anemia, particularly in po...
