En ese sentido, múltiples investigaciones, mostraron las posibilidades del tema electoral para entender mejor las relaciones de poder local y nacional, así como el impacto del constitucionalismo y el liberalismo en la cultura política de las sociedades latinoamericanas.

Latin America´s historical migration to North America has es- tablished a deep cultural, economic and political bond between Mexico and US, by means of institutional discursive process in each new North-American government. The candidate Donald Trump proposed the construction of a border wall during his electoral campaign, with the purpose of stopping Mexican migration, drug trafficking and transboundary criminals. In this context, the study analyses the discourse and communicative framework of the border wall, on the basis of Critical Discourse Analysis and the Ideo- logical Studies of Right-Wing Populism. The corpus of the work developed in the Political Communication Laboratory of the Government Sciences and Strategic Development Institute considers two discursive processes: a) Trump´s statements and electoral advertising on TV, and b) Enrique Peña Nieto´s statements on TV. The an...

Last couple of years, female presence has increased in Ecuadorian political institutions. However, the visibility of women in the public media continues to be limited. In this context, we investigate how these women are represented by the digital media. We conducted a descriptive study of the socio-demographic characterization of women in published opinion in the digital newspapers El Universo and El Comercio. We identify to what extent these media take women as a reference in their publications, and what are the female profiles in this regard. Through a number of 2,203 press-releases published between 2010 and 2015, we analyze the frequency of appearance of 78 women referred as sources of news. In general, we observe that women consulted as journalistic sources in digital newspapers fluctuate between 35 and 50 years of age, more than 50% identify themselves as mestizas, and most of them...

The aim of this paper is to describe the study of Political Com- munication historiographically, showing its theoretical evolution. Political communication involves thinking of a discipline that has several theoretical approaches and schools of thought that, from the social sciences, politics, communication and sociology, have contributed to the construction of po- litical communication as a new academic discipline. Therefore, this paper seeks to contribute to the current discussions on the origin, definitions and approaches to analysis on political communication, which for many is con- sidered an illegitimate and trivial discipline, but which at the moment is in the center of the study of modern democracies from the remarkable crisis of political representation and political disaffection, the lack of political ideolo- gies and high personalization and especially the new forms of communi...

This research paper analyzes the Bolivian media coverage of the presidential runoff of the 2021 General Elections in Peru, in which the candidates participated: Pedro Castillo and Keiko Fujimori. The main objective was to study the frames that El Diario and La Razón used in the journalistic articles of their web portals. Likewise, we identified the digital space given to the publications and recognized the profiles that the foreign press built around each candidate. From a mixed approach, we analyzed metrics and used qualitative tools to examine the use of level and generic framing. To do so, we focused on the media with the highest readership in La Paz and analyzed 34 web articles that were published between April 12 and June 6, 2021. The results show that 44% were journalistic products lacking depth in which less than 400 words were used; 35% presented confrontational frames; 43% refe...

Several academic studies have confirmed that young university students are using social media to get information about what is happening with their communities. This article explores what are the levels of consumption of traditional media, as well as digital media of young Mexican students from different regions of this country. The research was carried out in the context of the presidential elections of 2018. More than 1200 questionnaires were applied on line. The main objective of the research is to understand both traditional and digital media consumption and how these factors affect the political participation of this group of the population, inside and outside the internet. Among the main results expected to find a growing trend in the use of digital media to the detriment of the traditional, as well as a close relationship between political participation and media consumption.

10 April 2016 will be the presidential election in Peru. The media will cover the activities of the leading candidates and rummage in their resumes. In this process, the press will be tempted to use propaganda techniques, a category traditionally associated with political actors. For example, they may appeal to stereotypes, express their opinion through seemingly independent sources and select facts to build an ideological discourse. For its part the press agents of candidates and political marketing experts are hunting for journalists.

Within journalism there are critical and informative notes, in the latter the reader hopes to find information and a balanced approach in order to form his own opinion. However, in the municipal elections of 2018, in the case of the newspaper El Comercio regarding the candidacy about Daniel Urresti, it was not. Of the 62 briefing notes published on Urresti, 5 of them were, in fact, critical notes, which could influence readers when taking a position. This article analyzes three of these five notes, the selection criterion was the presence of a higher critical emphasis and a turgid use post-truth mechanisms. The main conclusion is that these mechanisms post-truth evidence, more than the intention of informing, the objective of criticizing and indirectly influencing readers when evaluating Urresti's candidacy.

This article explores and documents the incidence of the use of Twitter in the call for citizen participation by the main institutions and governmental figures of Cuba and Spain, in a period covering the daily life before the COVID-19 pandemic and the first months in which the disease hit the life of both countries. A quantitative methodology is used for the analysis, which will allow to compare the behavior of both governments, in terms of modernization of public authorities and the incentive for the population to get involved in the communication strategies established in social networks. The results indicate that we are in the presence of two digital communicative alternatives that, although numerically they do not seem to be far apart, differ in terms of the purpose of the calls to action and in the way of linking the resources of the microblogging network to determine the reaction o...

The aim of this paper is to present a formal analysis of the local laws related to Mexican journalists’ protection, and compare it with news workers’ perceptions on this issue. The starting point is a theoretical discussion on the current risk of practicing journalism, and the need to provide local legal assistance. This is followed by an argumentative formal analysis of the local laws, complemented by a set of 55 semi-structured interviews with journalists from the same places, which were conducted between February 2017 and August 2018. The findings show three kinds of legal protection: social, civil, and physical. On the contrary, based upon their own experiences, reporters do not trust in those laws. The final argument is that the local context matters in order to understand how the protection measures operate in the most dangerous country in the world for journalism.

The paper presents a review of the literature of news coverage on female presidential candidates. For this purpose, seven coverage frames  are included: a) visibility, b) gender reiteration, c) mediation of the intimate sphere, personality, d) thematic agenda, e) tonality and f) particularities of the media. Finally, an operationalization proposal is formulated for each of the frames that could be used in future research that addresses these political figures. It is concluded that women are represented from their intimate sphere and femininity, characteristics that are far from being culturally appropriate for debate in the public and political arena.

This paper analyzes the information treatment of the Mapuche people in the newspaper El Mercurio during two periods. First, between 1950 and 1973 (twentieth century); and second, during the years 2010, 2013 and 2014, (21st century). To this end, a corpus of 340 journalistic texts has been selected, of which 147 correspond to the 20th century (1950-1970) and 193, to the 21st century (2010, 2013-2014). The analysis shows that most of the frames are linked to conflicts, criminal prosecutions and arson attacks; so that El Mercurio prioritizes connotations and negative events to inform about the Mapuche indigenous people.
