OBJETIVE: To determine the clinical characteristics of pregnant women with falciparum malaria and stillbirth. DESIGN: cross-sectional descriptive study. MATERIAL AND METHODS: All cases of pregnant women with falciparum malaria treated at the Hospital de Apoyo III of Sullana during 1998 and 1999. Of all these cases studied were identified who studied with fetal death and they were required characteristics clinics. All data were processed in Excel. RESULTS: Among the 88 cases of pregnant women with malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum identified with thick film study, there were 8 cases of pregnant women with stillbirth were enrolled, representing a rate of 90.9 per 1,000 live births. Time of disease was mostly 6 or more days. Of the 8 cases, 6 received prior treatment, which were predominantly first-line drugs (chloroquine). The fetal death occurred predominantly during pregnancy, alth...

OBJECTIVE: To determine the dose and best rute of administration of misoprostol in the uterine evacuation of both missed abortion and fetal death. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Between November 1997 and May 1999 we evaluated 95 women with missed abortion and fetal death. We compared the effectiveness of oral misoprostol 400 mg combined with intracervical misoprostol 200 mg. RESULTS: In 95 selected patients divided in two groups of missed abortion (75 patients) and fetal death patients the best dose was the oral 400 mg with 200 mg intracervical with a latency period of 4-5 hours and 5-6 hours, respectively. CONCLUSIÓN: Oral m isoprostol 400 mg combined with intracervical 200 mg is able to diminish significantly the time of latency in both study groups.

Obejetive: To identify the etiopathogenic factors associated to both fetal and neonatal deaths in Lima, Peru. Materials and methods: Retrospective study of all the cases of fetal death over 20 weeks gestation and neonatal death before 28 days of life that underwent autopsy and histopathologic study, in order to identify the cause of perinatal death. Settings: Hospital San Bartolomé in Lima, between January 1, 1996 and December 31, 2000. Results: The prevalence of fetal death was 1,68% (508/30125) and neonatal death 1,44% (434/30125). All fetal deaths and 58,8% (255/434) of the neonatal deaths underwent autopsy. Among 508 fetal deaths, 92 (18%) presented signs of autolysis that did not allow appropiate identification of the etiopathogenic process. Fetal death was associated to prematurity (60,5%), nutricional/vascular defect (78,1%), social privation (60,8%), congenital anomaly (14,6%) a...

Placental mesenchymal dysplasia is a rare entity, confused with ultrasound and macroscopy with partial mole due to vesicular lesions and the presence of a fetus. Microscopy reveals hydropic trunk villi with great mesenchymal hyperplasia and prominent vascular lesions but without hyperplasia of the trophoblastic epithelium. The fetus, usually female, may be normal or present malformations, tumors or chromosomopathies. We present the study of four cases of placental mesenchymal dysplasia; three first-pregnancies, aged 39 and 20, and a second-pregnancy, aged 26. The oldest in the third trimester presented with preeclampsia and a female stillbirth with pulmonary and splenic anomalies, the other two presented vaginal bleeding and pelvic pain and one case was a finding in prenatal control at 8 weeks of gestation. In three cases, fetus and embryo were observed, two of them had a necropsy.

Perinatal deaths that did take place at the Institute Materno Perinatal from jannuary 1999 to October 2000, were studied. During this time 37,852 babies wereborn, of wich 36,995 were liveborns, 395 stillborns and 462 died during the first seven days of life.In order to study Perintal mortality I related to mothers age, these were groupedos: Yamger than 19, 20 to 25, 26 to 30, 31 to 36 and older than 36 years of age.Perinatal mortality rate vas 22.64; too high for western world levels but lower than the one registered at national level. Perinatal mortality rate in adolescents is lower than the one found in other age groups. The rate for numbers of liveborns was: 18.70 per 1000 in the 26 to 30 age group, 37.28 in the 31 to 36 age group, and 38.38 for women older than 36 years of age these data shows that perinatal mortality I, increased withage of the mother.Perinatal mortality I related t...
