This work proposes an electronic equipment which determines the marbling grade in beef rib eye according to the American grading scale using digital image processing and machine learning, achieving an 88.89 % coincidence level with grading done by beef specialists. Existing solutions which use image processing usually require calibration methods due to working in non-controlled environments. Furthermore, they only acquire the fat distribution from the longissimus dorsi muscle with an approximate accuracy of 80 %, without referring the distribution to any quality standard. In this work, meat samples are placed in a food grade stainless-steel enclosure with a touch screen and a digital RGB camera. The device acquires an image of the rib eye, which is then analyzed using techniques such as adaptive histogram analysis based on the HSV color model, histogram peaks detection for grayscale thre...

This work proposes an electronic equipment aimed at measuring the color difference between fabrics for a homogeneous selection of these. The proposed method analyzes tissues with different illuminants so that, by taking measurements with a camera, the impact of effects such as metamerism can be reduced, resulting in a more accurate method that represents reality. For this, an enclosure was designed and built to allow constant lighting conditions and spotlights with standard lighting were installed. On the software side, the camera was manually configured to ensure persistent measurements over time and the colors obtained from the RGB color space were converted to CIELAB. For the calculation of the color difference, the Delta E (CMC) color difference equation was used because this is the standard used in the textile industry. Finally, a neural network was trained to estimate the color dif...

The growth of cloud application services delivered through data centers with varying traffic demands unveils limitations of traditional load balancing methods. Aiming to attend evolving scenarios and improve the overall network performance, this paper proposes a load balancing method based on an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) in the context of Knowledge-Defined Networking (KDN). KDN seeks to leverage Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques for the control and operation of computer networks. KDN extends Software-Defined Networking (SDN) with advanced telemetry and network analytics introducing a so-called Knowledge Plane. The ANN is capable of predicting the network performance according to traffic parameters paths. The method includes training the ANN model to choose the path with least load. The experimental results show that the performance of the KDN-based data center has been greatl...

Small and medium-sized enterprises have always proven to be crucial to national economies, yet many of them fail for a variety of reasons. One of them is selecting an inadequate supplier that does not meet the needs that the company requires to properly perform its core business. Therefore, this project proposes to develop a web application to select the best supplier option for a company. The main objective is to assist in decision making and reduce costs with a web application that implements the Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process (FAHP), based on a series of criteria and priorities chosen by the company itself. After testing the application, the result was a relative score assigned to each alternative, thus identifying the supplier with the highest value as the most optimal choice. Finally, through the measurement of the consistency ratio for each pair matrix developed, it was possible ...

This work proposes a computational algorithm to convert digital files containing electrocardiogram (ECG) information into 1D signals. Many medical databases have in storage files containing ECG information that is not easy to process for computational algorithms. Digitization by the proposed method makes it possible to modernize the databases of many health centers in order to perform post-processing of the signals obtained. This method is based on applying digital signal processing techniques to images obtained from a PDF file produced by an electrocardiograph. The proposed algorithm takes into consideration the thickness of the printed signal in the PDF image so that it does not introduce distortion in the final 1D signal. Due to the distribution of the ECG signals on the PDF files the algorithm identifies and segments the signals on 2 dimensions. The results show that the proposed met...

Current technology seeks to develop nanoscale devices capable of storing and processing information. These devices would be difficult to make in the area of electronics, which is based on the manipulation of electric charge. However, thanks to advances in experimental and theoretical physics in the field of condensed matter, these devices are already a reality, belonging to the field of what we now call spintronics, which bases its functionality on the control of the electron’s spin, a property that can only be conceived at the quantum level. In this article we review this new perspective, describing giant- and tunneling- magnetoresistance, the spin transfer torque, and their applications such as MRAM memories, nano-oscillators and lateral spin valves.

The need for e-learning in modern Russia is caused by the rapid development of informatization, digitalization, information and communication technologies, the creation of a global environment for mutual integration of cultures and disciplines, as well as the formation of open continuous education, which is the basis of a post-industrial (information) society. These processes stimulate an active search for creative educational practices that meet the requirements of the information society. A modern specialist must have a certain amount of knowledge that will allow him to learn constantly, improve his skills and abilities, self-develop and self-actualize in order to keep up with the time of changes in the information society. In the framework of the modern educational paradigm, the student is considered as a subject of knowledge, not an object of pedagogical influence. In the early – m...

Microelectronic fabrication of Si typically involves high-temperature or high-energy processes. For instance, wafer fabrication, transistor fabrication, and silicidation are all above 500°C. Contrary to that tradition, we believe low-energy processes constitute a better alternative to enable the industrial application of single-molecule devices based on 2D materials. The present work addresses the postsynthesis processing of graphene at unconventional low temperature, low energy, and low pressure in the poly methyl-methacrylate- (PMMA-) assisted transfer of graphene to oxide wafer, in the electron-beam lithography with PMMA, and in the plasma patterning of graphene with a PMMA ribbon mask. During the exposure to the oxygen plasma, unprotected areas of graphene are converted to graphene oxide. The exposure time required to produce the ribbon patterns on graphene is 2 minutes. We produce ...

Muon-neutrino elastic scattering on electrons is an observable neutrino process whose cross section is precisely known. Consequently a measurement of this process in an accelerator-based νμ beam can improve the knowledge of the absolute neutrino flux impinging upon the detector; typically this knowledge is limited to ∼10% due to uncertainties in hadron production and focusing. We have isolated a sample of 135±17 neutrino-electron elastic scattering candidates in the segmented scintillator detector of MINERvA, after subtracting backgrounds and correcting for efficiency. We show how this sample can be used to reduce the total uncertainty on the NuMI νμ flux from 9% to 6%. Our measurement provides a flux constraint that is useful to other experiments using the NuMI beam, and this technique is applicable to future neutrino beams operating at multi-GeV energies. © 2016 American Physic...

We present a first approach to a new method to compute the motion estimation in digital videos using the two-dimensional instantaneous frequency information computed using amplitude-modulation frequency-modulation (AM-FM) methods. The optical flow vectors are computed using an iteratively reweighted norm for total variation (IRN-TV) algorithm. We compare the proposed method using synthetic videos versus a previous three-dimensional AM-FM based method and available motion estimation methods such as a phase-based, Horn-Schunck and the Lucas-Kanade methods. The results are promising producing a full density estimation with more accurate results than the other methods.

This work proposes an algorithm for scalpel region detection using color segmentation and edge detection. The input images are obtained with a fixed camera that has a line of view perpendicular to the scalpel plane. Three squares of red, green and blue colors were added to the scalpel in order to serve as fiducials. For the detection of those marks, the use of two methods was evaluated: One based on the application of thresholds to the color components, and the other based on the use of a fuzzy rule machine. The experimentation shows that both approaches provide similar results. Some morphological operations are then applied in order to detect the scalpel region. The algorithm was successfully tested in several cases, and some examples of the results are presented and analyzed. © 2020 IEEE.

Motor Imagery based BCIs (MI-BCIs) allow the control of devices and communication by imagining different mental tasks. Despite many years of research, BCIs are still not the most accurate systems to control applications, due to two main factors: signal processing with classification, and users. It is admitted that BCI control involves certain characteristics and abilities in its users for optimal results. In this study, spatial abilities are evaluated in relation to MI-BCI control regarding flexion and extension mental tasks. Results show considerable correlation (r=0.49) between block design test (visual motor execution and spatial visualization) and extension-rest tasks. Additionally, rotation test (mental rotation task) presents significant correlation (r=0.56) to flexion-rest tasks.
