Both the preservation of the poorly mineralized skeleton of sharks and the preservation of stomach contents are rarely observed in the fossil record. Here we report on a partial skeleton of a lamniform shark, including portions of the visceral arches and the anterior segment of the vertebral column, collected from the late Miocene beds of the Pisco Formation exposed at Cerro Yesera (Ica Desert, South Peru). Based on the morphology of the preserved teeth, this specimen was determined as a juvenile of the extinct lamnid species Cosmopolitodus hastalis. The shark skeleton includes remains of fish (featuring a pilchard determined as Sardinops sp. cf. S. sagax) in the abdominal region. These fish remains are interpreted herein as the fossilized stomach contents of the shark. For the first time, piscivory is demonstrated in a juvenile individual of Cosmopolitodus hastalis. This result is consi...

In this article we examine a set of stories that have appeared amongthe Ashaninka, Awajun and Wampis of eastern Peru featuring adiversity of white supernatural beings that wander about their communitiesto steal their vital force or introduce harmful substancesinto their bodies, thus affecting their personal and social integrity. We argue that these stories constitute a response to the capitalistviolence experienced by these peoples as a result of hard-linegovernment policies promoting private investment, and the frenziedactivities of a large number of extractive companies. Such stories areinformed by indigenous notions about personhood and illness, butalso by native eco-cosmologies that view life as a scarce resource, the object of intense interspecific competition. If these ‘politicaleconomies of life’ do not turn into a Hobbesian war of all againstall it is due to an ethic of self-re...

The native language Amahuaca (Panoan family, Peru) features a cross-linguistically unusual tripartite case-marking system whereby the subjects of intransitive and transitive verbs are signaled by means of the enclitics =x and =n, respectively, whereas the objects do not bear any morphological marking (Sparing-Chávez, 2007/2012; Clem, 2019a; among others). Another salient property of this system is the diverse realizations that nominals display when they host overt case-markers; this is, precisely, the primary focus of the present article. While these manifestations might initially appear erratic, our analysis reveals that the realizations of the marked nominals are highly predictable, especially when we posit the presence of a latent consonant that emerges phonetically in the context of =x and =n. From a diachronic perspective, we argue that this allomorphic variability can be linked to...

This essay intends to debate the major challenges that Peru faces as it implements a national regime on Access to genetic resources and Benefit-Sharing (ABS). The ABS encourages the conservation of genetic diversity by means of the fair and equitable distribution of the benefits arisen from the utilization of genetic resources. Distribution is to take place between the providing country and the user of the resources. Peru features four main weaknesses in relation to ABS: (1) Firstly; its national legislation on the topic sets a bureaucratic and complex procedure that hinders the negotiation of fructiferous ABS contracts. (2) The role of the “national scientific partner” has been distorted and true opportunities for scientific cooperation are missed. (3) Peruvian legislation on ABS establishes retroactive effects infringing the principle of legal certainty. (4) Even though the nationa...
