a narrative resource used by many writers, the anecdote was an essential element in the work of don Ricardo Palma. In fact, the presence of this element managed to enrich and give vitality to that impressive and vast detailed picture of historical events and characters that managed to create the writer of Lima with his pen. It is precisely in El Demonio de los Andes, one of the traditional works of the traditionalist, where history and anecdote complement each other in the best way delighting many readers, but also giving many critics to question the work of Palma as Historian for the recurrent abuse of the anecdote. The present work seeks to delimit the boundaries between history and fiction and the use of the anecdote in the work of the traditionalist.

Viceroy Francisco de Toledo (1569-81) both reviled and admired the Incas. Surprisingly, he identified exactly the same aspects of their rule to praise and to condemn. To supply a legal justification for the Spanish conquest of Tawantinsuyu, Toledo and his advisers set out to prove that the Incas met the definition of tyranny in Castilian law, as explained by Aristotle and codified in the Siete Partidas. Tyranny was defined by specific elements: state surveillance and control, a climate of fear, the destruction of civil society, social leveling, and a monopoly by the state over its subjects’ time, labor, and property. But even while condemning the Inca regime for these methods, Toledo came to believe that these methods had enabled the Incas to rule well and to create a prosperous society in the Andes. The viceroy self-consciously emulated the same aspects of Inca rule that he invoked to...

The series of the life of San Francisco de Asís in Santiago de Chile was requested to Cuzco in the seventeenth century, to the workshops of Basilio de Santa Cruz and Diego Quispe Tito. It has a counterpart in the city of Cusco (40 canvases) and is developed in the style of the baroque school. The Franciscan Bishop Fray Diego Humanzoro makes the order. We will analyze the first painting of the series (1/53) entitled The prophecy. Francisco appears with wings, already showing the stigmata, as if he were an angel, the spiritual heritage, which arises from the millenarian movement whose advocate is the Abbot Joaquin de Fiore, who will prophesy a new apostolic era, he era of the Holy Spirit, which would completely transform the Church with the advent of two mendicant orders, the Franciscans and the Dominicans. From the first would emerge Il poverello di Assisi.

In 1941, Peruvian president Manuel Prado declared by official decree that the year 1942 be dedicated to the celebration of the Fourth Centenary of the Discovery of the Amazon River which he described as the “crowning achievement of our nationality integration”. In the aftermath of the Ecuadorian- Peruvian war of 1941 and in the context of the renewal of the rubber extraction, the fourth centenary proved to be unprecedented in the production of speeches on Peruvian identity and the Amazon. This work shows how an attempt was made to incorporate the Amazonia into the national identity by reviving and updating clichés about the jungle.

During the civil wars between the conquistadores, Peru was a field of experimentation for the new military tactics developed in Europe following the introduction of portable infantry firearms. This article suggests that, however, the techniques introduced by Francisco de Carvajal, Gonzalo Pizarro’s fieldmaster, predated those used in Europe by several decades, especially regarding the rate of fire in combat. In the battle of Huarina (1547), Carvajal used his own method to ensure his infantry’s ability to deliver heavy fire. The technique relied on adequate training and on the number of weapons each soldier carriedin battle, rather than on the number of men.

A young Galician converso, initiated to the faith of Moses by the women of his family near the Portuguese border shortly before moving to Peru at the end of the sixteenth century, requested in 1603 the absolution of the Holy Office of Lima, obsessed with the salvation of his soul and his mystical experiences. Managing his neurotic mood, the inquisitors tried to take full advantage of a case of little relevance to give themselves the means to end a crypto-Jewish nucleus that had spread to the Indies.

This article discusses how Cadiz merchants conducted their trade with Peru during the transit from colonial to republican times. The basis for describing this brief but intense period is the unpublished correspondence of Francisco de Carranza, a direct witness of the events of that time. As a result of the difficulties that marked those years, merchants increasingly resorted to fraudulent practices like forging invoices or using fake certificates to introduce Spanish goods in Peru.
