Although the importance in the daily life of Spanish (and in other terms also Indigenous) population, the notarial profession in Yucatán never received the deserved attention by researchers. In the present work, an attempt will be made to reconstruct the events concerning two Yucatecan notaries in relation to the constitution of their own archives during the second half of the 16th century, also analysing the dialectical relationship that put them in conflict for the management of imperial and local power and the arguments used to defend their own jurisdiction.

The aim of this paper is to present the social and stylistic variation in the speech prosody of the Spanish of Mérida, Yucatán. Assertive utter-ances from sociolinguistic interviews and discourse completion tasks are analyzed considering the social variables of age, gender and educational level. The prosodic analysis is carried out within the Autosegmental Metrical model (Pierrehumbert 1980, Ladd 2008) and with the Sp_ToBI labeling conventions (Hualde & Prieto 2015). The results show that this variety of Spanish is characterized by a prominent descent starting from the first tonal peak, the early-peak alignment in some prenuclear posi-tions, and the presence of some non-falling boundary tones. The social and stylistic variation suggests that the last two are features that indicate vernacularity.

This work presents important decisions made during the implementationof the intercultural educational model at the UniversidadIntercultural Maya de Quintana Roo, Mexico, in a context of povertyand conditions of lagging behind the rest of the society of theindigenous Yucatec Maya population. Within the legal frameworkof public universities in Mexico, the financing of projects, thedeveloping of intercultural pedagogy and designing the institutionalsettings, rested on elements that included learning/transmission andconstruction/innovation of knowledge that combined aspects of thelocal culture with conventional education. High figures on indicatorssuch as retention, graduation rate, employability, and quality ofthe academic programs, along with opinions from alumni, achievedduring the period of February 2007 to February 2015, indicate thatthe decisions and actions taken in the beginning of t...

In Yucatan it is produced between ten thousand and fifteen thousand tons of honey per year; more thaneleven thousand Mayan-speaking beekeepers in rural areas depend on the economic flow from thisincome. However, due the absence of an organized incentive program for apiculture, there is no synergybetween the components of this system. This results in a weak system unable to face latent externalthreats that could cause the extinction of bees, jeopardizing other income-producing activities such asagriculture, cattle industry and forestry. In this article, presented at the 6th International SustainabilityCongress 2019, in México, is shown qualitative research on the emerging existence of ApiculturalProduct System in two regions of Yucatan. The main objective is to analyze the current situation ofbeekeeping in two municipalities of Yucatan, belonging to the western and northwestern region, t...

The aim of this study was to detect Toxoplasma gondii DNA in skeletal muscle and kidney samples collected from small wild rodents, captured in 10 locations in the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico (Campeche, Quintana Roo and Yucatan states) in 2018-2019. In total, 127 rodents of seven species were captured. A fragment of skeletal muscle and kidney was taken from all of them for genomic DNA extraction. The identification of T. gondii was carried out by nested PCR directed to a fragment of the B1 gene of the parasite. The rodent species with the highest number of captured individuals was Heteromys gaumeri (n=39). The PCR did not identify T. gondii DNA in the organs evaluated.

The objective of this research is to analyze the incidence of the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in the perception of quality in the service by customers of grocery stores in the west of the city of Mérida, Yucatán, Mexico. Faced with a highly competitive and changing market, one of the main threats faced by grocery stores is the limited vision that the owners have regarding the innovation and implementation of ICTs within the business, taking into account the direct competition they have with convenience stores, which offer the same products, but differ in additional services (24-hour service, deposits, recharges, payment facilities through bank terminals, payment for services such as water, electricity, internet, among others). With a quantitative and cross-sectional approach through the use of a sample of 282 people, the perception of customers was measured ...

Background. Research and written communication skills are essential in undergraduate medical education, because medical doctors are often involved in research, and written communication is part of a medical doctor´s everyday routine. Academic medical programs that include training in clinical or epidemiological research require written communication aptitudes. Constructive feedback is a review technique commonly employed in medical education that involves the professor´s close surveillance of the student’s performance and a clear communication to respectfully explain to students their strengths, weaknesses and opportunities of improvement, while ensuring a fair evaluation. Even though constructive feedback is common in clinical practice, it is rarely used in undergraduate medical training in scientific writing. Objective. To evaluate the impact of constructive feedback on the academi...

The province of Yucatan has been often described as a Spanish empire’s periphery, not only because of its farness from the Courts (of Mexico and Spain), but also because of its conquest’s incompleteness, since extensive territories remained out of the colonial control for centuries. However, in the sixteenth century the Defensores (or advocates) of the Indians, as well as the Procuradores (or representatives) of the local Spanish towns maintained a close relationship with both the Mexican Court and the Council of the Indies. This article examines those actors’ travels, as well as the circulation of the documents they produced in order to determine the differential impact of those two factors on the production of imperial law. Special attention will be paid to the strategies aimed at interfering with the free circ...

In Spanish Colonial America, as well as in the Iberian Peninsula at the same time, different jurisdictions intertwined in the same space. By way of consequence, the complex political organization of the New World was composed, at the local level, by the Indian and Spanish Councils, the doctrines, and the provincial structures called corregimientos. Although the officials of those institutions received precise instructions, in which the Spanish Crown defined and limited their functions, tensions were common between the Indian governors, the clergymen, the Spanish Councils’ officeholders, and the Spanish provincial magistrates, or corregidores. The present article will analyze a series of lawsuits that occurred in sixteenth century Yucatan and in which those authorities were implicated, in order to highlight not only the nature of the jurisdictional conflicts, but also the modalities of ...

This article aims at identifying some of the actors responsible for the transportation of records from America to the Iberian Peninsula in the sixteenth century. We will also show how their intervention had an impact on political communication in the Spanish empire. Our goal is to analyse the formation of archives from the perspective of the agents who were charged with their transportation. We will examine the role that Indigenous messengers, as well as the lawyers who were expected to represent the Spanish King’s vassals from the overseas territories before the Council of the Indies in Spain played in the circulation, use and conservation of the records in the empire. Since it is impossible to be exhaustive, the analysis will be built on a series of examples relative to the province of Yucatán in New Spain.
